"Glee" episode has Britney clapping her little hands -- ka-ching!
Nobody is more excited about Tuesday night's much ballyhooed Britney Spears episode of "Glee" than Brit-Brit herself. Because Brit-Brit is gone to make some cold hard cash off the episode.
"Can't wait for GLEE tomorrow night," she tweeted happily on Monday. "I'm going to tweet along as it airs on the West Coast so we can watch together."
Pop stars whose work is covered on the show experience sales boosts, trade publication Billboard reports, stating the obvious. The week after Lady Gaga's music was prominently featured, her album "The Fame" sold 31,000 copies, an 11% increase over the prior week, Billboard reported, citing SoundScan. Yes, 31,000 copies is something to rave about in the music industry. That's like a margin of error for TV ratings -- once again demonstrating how much more daunting is the parameter for success in the broadcast TV world.
Last week's "Glee" season debut, for instance, clocked 12.5 million viewers, and yet, that crowd only made the episode the nation's 22nd most watched program of Premiere Week. "Glee" finished 19 other programs on broadcast TV -- "NCIS," "Grey's Anatomy," "Hawaii Five-0," "Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family," "$#*! My Dad Says," blah, blah, blah -- and two ESPN football games.
But Fox suits were elated, because "Glee" was the week's the No. 1 scripted program among 18-49 year olds -- the age bracket that is the Holy Grail of Madison Avenue.
This Tuesday night's episode, in which glee clubsters under anesthesia have a Brit-Brit musical nightmare, is expected to do even better. WaPo TeamTV's Emily Yahr will blog the episode.
