Reality TV series star Sarah Palin: giving zombies something to think about but no match for Bristol

By Lisa de Moraes

[This blog post has been updated]

Sarah Palin -- giving zombies a run for their money.

TLC scored the biggest series launch in its history Sunday -- about 5 million viewers -- with the unveiling of "Sarah Palin's Alaska."

That crowd rivals the 5 million bagged by AMC's zombie series "The Walking Dead" when it debuted on Halloween. Coincidentally, that was also a best-ever series launch for that basic cable network.

"Sarah Palin's Alaska" gave TLC a huge ratings boost in its Sunday 9-10 p.m. time slot. This calendar year to date, the Silver Spring-based network has averaged just 1.24 million viewers in that hour.

Palin's numbers were, however, no match for her daughter's. Last Monday's "Dancing With the Stars," on which Bristol continues to compete, had clocked 20 million viewers and, what with tonight's "Dancing" being the penultimate performance show of this edition, Bristol's numbers are only going to get bigger Monday night.

It's a repeat of Nov. 2, when Sarah Palin contributed to Fox News Channel's coverage of the midterm election and jokingly forecast Bristol would "kick my butt" on "Dancing" that night -- which she did.

Continuing to put TLC's Sunday Palin numbers in perspective, in the same hour:

*NBC's NFL football game averaged nearly 20 million viewers

*ABC's "Desperate Housewives" logged nearly 12 million people

*CBS's "Undercover Boss" attracted an average of 10 million

*Fox's "Family Guy" nabbed about 6.2 million

*CW's broadcast of an old Bruce Willis flick, "Bandits," averaged about 1.6 million people in that hour.

Here are some of the eight-episode show's Very Special Moments, as selected by TLC:

Sarah Palin "ratings crack"? Only in the loose fantasy of a loathsome liberal's languid, lugubrious laxity. The first episode of Sarah Palin's Alaska was fantastic! Beautiful Sarah, beautiful scenery. Super-hit show!

Having Lisa de Moraes "review" anything involving Sarah or Bristol Palin is no different from having a Nazi review a TV show about Jews. In each case, irrational hatred prevents any objectivity or fairness.

Posted by: WashingtonDame | November 15, 2010 8:58 AM | Report abuse

Gotta hand it to Sarah's fan club. They are ready to pounce at a moment's notice.

It makes that Sarah Palin milks the celebricow as long as she can. Everyone knows it doesn't last forever. She has no political future and she knows it, we all do! So, heck... if she wants to embarrass herself and her family for a few bucks, it's her life. I don't care, because if I did, I would be hugging a bottle of antiacid.
Sarah Palin ruins my life, so I keep her out of it. Heck, and I LOVE grizzly bears!

Posted by: ileschinder | November 15, 2010 9:12 AM | Report abuse

So this story didn't really say anything, did it? The show aired, but we don't know how it did. So why the title "ratings crack" if you plan on letting us know how it did.

Anyway, my only interest as a loyal Democrat is that she wins the Republican nomination for President.

That woman has a mysterious, ghastly charisma, doesn't she? I hate, loathe, despise her -- so I'm greedy to follow all the news stories about her and her family. I guess I am addicted to hating Sarah Palin. Maybe I should join a support group to vanquish this destructive habit.

Posted by: los22 | November 15, 2010 9:21 AM | Report abuse

Come on, folks. Don't lower yourselves by hating Sarah. It's a lot easier to treat her and her ilk as an ongoing real-life situation comedy. I myself see her as a natural comic genius.

Posted by: justmike | November 15, 2010 9:28 AM | Report abuse

I swear that when Sarah was running as McCain's VP I heard that she was 48. Now she claims to be 46. I don't want to sound like I am calling here a liar, but would it be out of line to ask her to produce her birth certificate?

Posted by: billy_z | November 15, 2010 9:29 AM | Report abuse

The fact is that although palin is stupid, ignorant and very shallow she is way smarter and more prepared for the Presidency that moron w. Come on give the creature a chance.

bubbasouth - you should learn how to use that remote, there's much better fair on other channels.
From the preview I saw it looks like she was lucky not to feed her family to the bears - "don't cast towards the bears" - yeah right.

Folks, this story is a placeholder and will evolve and become more detailed as more information comes in; it's a reality of the internet/instant news cycycle. If there was no early story, no reporting until after the ratings came out, people would be complaining that the Washington Post (and other papers) were hiding the news, denying letting people know about Sarah Palin's television series.

There is, no longer, any middle road, just people who feel they have to take one side or the other. For example the earlier comment "Having Lisa de Moraes "review" anything involving Sarah or Bristol Palin is no different from having a Nazi review a TV show about Jews. In each case, irrational hatred prevents any objectivity or fairness."

If you don't like Ms. de Moraes reviews, or any other writers or opinionist or commentators in the Washington Post, don't read them. It's that simple. Either that or read them and explain why you think those views are wrong. But the comment about Nazi reviewing shows about Jews is uncalled for.

Several years ago, I used to watch "Jon & Kate Plus 8" on TLC, and we all know what happened there. Perhaps needful to say, I no longer watch it since the adults unhinged themselves from reality. Since then, TLC itself seems to have unhinged from reality as well -- 19 (20) & Counting, the 7 Gosselins, now Sarah Palin -- TLC has decided the money is in dysfunctional families who proudly wallow in their own dysfunction. NOT worth my time. I just hope that Palin's fans nominate her for the White House in 2012.

For a person who loves Alaska and the freedom that living there provides, she seems to be spending a lot of time in the public eye and even has aspirations of being president of this country. So which is it Sarah?

Hi Badself - It looks like you did hear what this story said:

1. The show aired, (last night-Sunday)
2. They [Wapo] will publish the ratings. (When announced this morning.)

However, you missed the question mark after the word crack. Lisa asks, is TCL's show going to get a burst in the size of ratings for a typical TLC show.

Badself continues:

" Anyway, my only interest as a loyal Democrat is that she wins the Republican nomination for President. "

Good lord, no matter how entertaining or good for the reelection it might be, what your are interested in is a nightmare.

Beautiful. Any perceived slight at Ms. Palin receives a 'Nazi' comparison from a supporter.

How offensive! And ignorant. Civilized free speech is not the equivalent of The Holocaust.

Please, educate yourselves before exercising this most valuable right.

I watched 10 minutes. It all seemed very staged. And it was boring, which is a worse sin.

Posted by: motogp46 | November 15, 2010 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Really poor headline, because it can be interpreted two opposite ways.

Does "ratings crack" mean her ratings are cracking, as in bad news for the show?

Or does "ratings crack" mean the show is addictive in the same notorious manner as crack cocaine, as in good news for the show?

Either way, seems like it would have been best to hold off posting until there were actual ratings to report.

You can just picture Palin and her DC backers sitting at the table on the "cement slab" and the guys in suits telling her, "Listen, you're not likable. We've got to do something to make people LIKE you. Everybody knows you're the barracuda, Death panel, Obama bashing conservative, but we need to go full on Reagan here. Reality. That's the answer."
Paul Begala on CNN election night:
"Sarah Palin will never be the GOP darling. They want her to be the next Reagan. But it'll never happen. Why? Reagan, whether you agreed or disagreed with him politically, was a likable guy. You knew he was a nice person. Sarah is mean. Sarah is vicious. She's just a nasty person and they won't be able to overcome that fact."
Cue reality show aimed at making her likable.

Palin is a celebrity, the biggest in the world.

It is interesting how the statement above, when she used it, was meant as an insult of the man whom the American People made president of the United States.

Now, when it is used toward her, the statement is just mere matter of fact, and cash registers ring Palin's re-write of the 'Halellujah Chorus.'

I agree with several posters!!! I liked Sarah UNTIL she started believing her own hype and tried to sound intelligent! NOW she's in her element. Making money pimping her family and getting trailor trash followers to believe although she quit a REAL political job to become Hollywood and make millions she's still one of them, folksy while they're STILL POOR IN A TRAILOR PARK!!!

Sarah won't win the WH so let this idiot have some fun and get richer!!! Tea anyone.... hahahahaha

Obama is gearing up for a 2nd term and he knows WE WILL SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT when the time comes.....

TLC finally figured out how to get right-wingers to watch something on a station that has "learning" in its title. Enjoy it, Sarah, all fame is fleeting.

Posted by: jckdoors | November 15, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Let me correct something else written by a poster. Obama became a "celebrity" because people found him fascincating like Sarah BUT sadly he had to go get the credentials of EVERY white male to become President. He didn't do it by sounding like an idiot in interviews, Sasha/Malia becoming teen moms then pimping themselves on TV to support his campaign. Michelle didn't contribute to the pimpimg of the family by using the Hollywood method as well. Sadly she had to go get Ivy League credentials as well as a blk woman. HOLLA! We all know Michelle couldn't earn millions being Sarah Palin in our society????

So I don't see Sarah as something to brag on.....I bet Chelsea (intel herself) thinks "I bet yall appreciate my mom NOW!" I called Hillary plenty of names but DUMB was never one of them.....

I find it odd that so many people loathe Sarah Palin. I don't know why except that she's a conservative. I've watched her many times on Fox and to say that she's stupid is inaccurate. I don't know if she's presidential material, but was Obama? Let's see...Palin was actually a governor running a state. Obama was a community organizer. His two years in the Senate (where he missed something like 80% of votes) was spent running for the presidency. How is he so different from Palin?

And the press keeps helping SP make more money while others have less in this current economic climate...and what does she (or better, can she) contribute the betterment of America? Nothing.

Book sales through the roof....

Speeches and appearances selling out nationwide....

Record ratings for the Learning Channel....

Alaskan tourism expecting an uptick....

...and she's about to release her second runaway best-seller in a year.

Sarah Palin seems to be single-handedly stimulating the economy. What has Obama and his gang done recently?

If you stop paying attention to her, she will go away. It's the only way to make it stop. No need for name-calling, aspersion-casting or anything else. Stop clicking, stop watching, look away, plug your ears, and it'll all go away.

"Beautiful Sarah, beautiful scenery. Super-hit show!" Sounds like someone forgot to take their meds today. Sara Palin wouldn't last 6 hours in the woods with her 3 assistant, 2 stylists, one publicist. You can take one look at the woman and know she knows nothing about the back country unless it requires designer sunglasses and makeup! What a joke America.

While I love Alaska - lived there for decades, I couldn't bring myself to watch the train wreck that I pictured the Palin's calling a show. Worked with Todd - first, second, third, fourth and fifth impressions were that he is a self-centered pr*ck.

To call this ratings scorecard blurb a review is a bit disingenuous. I don't know what WashingtonDame was reading, but it certainly did not invoke any kind of Nazi analogies to me. In fact, the article seemed completely devoid of judgment of any kind. Have we sunk so low that we cannot even discuss a TV show without devolving into calling one another idiots and fascists?

Posted by: endlessazul | November 15, 2010 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Actually, this show is probably wonderful for her family as it gives her a chance to spend time as a Mom, rather than travelling this country making paid appearances that share her crazy Christian views. Can't wait for her presidential bid!!

Posted by: skins10 | November 15, 2010 5:30 PM | Report abuse

this just proves that the majority of americans hate reality, and also that most are just too damn stupid to logically recognize the difference. personally i paid far more attention to PBS. what a wonderfully insightful show about the mysterious existence of the WOLVERINE. this was filmed by REAL ALASKANS. but fear not, for i am certain that PALIN WILL NOW MORPH into a mother WOLVERINE. she seems to be obsessed with furry smelly things.

Sarah Palin is a lovely American idol and about as lucid. What a joke to have her advertising the state she left high and dry for $18 millions and a ghost writer, but if it benefits our folks in Alaska, I'm for it. I can't stomach watching, much less listening to the voice that can etch glass, but I'm for Alaska becoming better known. Got a lot of relatives there. Go Alaska!

Sarah's element is anything in front of a camera! She missed her calling because she is a natural born actress, so we never get to SEE the REAL Sarah Palin. She has such a pathologic insatiable need for attention, as if she never got any as a kid. Actually, Sarah has all the characteristics of a child of an alcoholic, but her parents are never even mentioned, as if they are dead, so I guess we'll never know.

Posted by: Maerzie | November 15, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Loved the show as much as I admire Palin and her family for being real. Evil will always attack good and Christians are everyone's punching bags these days. You go girl. And to Billy Z, when Obama lets Hawaii release his birth certificate, you can ask for Palin's. Personal attacks say more about whose making them than Palin.

Dancing With The Stars was once a legitimate competition.

They added the Palin kid whose only claim to stardom has to be getting pregnant as a teen out of wedlock.

She has no dancing ability compared to the others but manages to attrack the Palin followers who otherwise would not watch a show with "girls in skimpy costumes".

Now the competition, which is represented as being based upon ability of the dancers, has become as phoney as professional wrestling.
