Bristol Palin versus Keith Olbermann

By Lisa de Moraes

If you thought the 11th edition of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" was over as of the November 23 finale when Jennifer Grey was awarded the hideous-yet-coveted Mirror Ball Trophy -- well, you'd be wrong!

The beauty of casting the daughter of a polarizing political figure in this show, that purports to be a simple little dance competition, is that the show has an afterlife that can last for up to who knows how long.

Bristol Palin performs with Mark Ballas on "Dancing With the Stars. (ABC)

This week, both comic Margaret Cho, who was one of the 11th edition's competitors, and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann couldn't seem to stop talking about Bristol Palin, daughter of Sarah, and the competition's second runner-up.

Most recently, "Bristol" responded on her Facebook page to cracks made about her by Olbermann on his show. Olbermann had taken issue with the single teen mom's whole "abstinence advocate" career, paying particular attention to a sex ed PSA that had hit been released about two weeks earlier, that featured Bristol and "Jersey Shore's" beloved horndog The Situation -- who had also competed on the most recent edition of "Dancing."

In the PSA, Bristol and The Situation exchanged lively banter as to whether abstinence or a better grade of condom made the most sense for teens contemplating a roll in the hay. Extra points if you can guess which person advocated which.

"Bristol Palin, she has done a public service announcement this The Situation guy from TV's 'Jersey Shore.' It's about abstinence and safe sex. Sadly, it is not a spoof done by The Onion," Olbermann said, showing a clip of the PSA.

Olbermann continued: "She's the Candies spokesperson for abstinence? She and her son? Because it's got to work this time? This is like saying George Bush kept us safe except for that 9/11 thing, which doesn't count."

Bristol responded, at great length, via Facebook:

Recently, a left wing commentator named Keith Olbermann attacked me for being a spokesperson for abstinence education and for being an Ambassador for the Candies Foundation, which promotes teen pregnancy awareness and prevention education. He went so far as to call me "the worst person" he knows, apparently, for my efforts to educate teenagers about the real world risks of premarital sex.

Accusing me of hypocrisy is by now, an old canard. What Mr. Olbermann lacks in originality he makes up for with insincere incredulity. Mr. Olbermann fails to understand that in order to have credibility as a spokesperson, it sometimes takes a person who has made mistakes. Parents warn their children about the mistakes they made so they are not repeated. Former gang members travel to schools to educate teenagers about the risks of gang life. Recovered addicts lecture to others about the risks of alcohol and drug abuse. And yes, a teen mother talks about the benefits of preventing teen pregnancy.

I have never claimed to be perfect. If that makes me the "worst person in the world" to Mr. Olbermann, then I must apologize for not being absolutely faultless like he undoubtedly must be.

To Mr. Olbermann let me say this: you can attack me all you want. But you will not stop me from getting my message out about teen pregnancy prevention. And one day, if you ever have a daughter, you may change your mind about me.

Earlier this week, comic Margaret Cho suggested on her Web site that shy Bristol had been pushed into learning how to dance on national TV by her mother, in order to rehabilitate Bristol's image.

Cho, citing an unnamed source who "really should seriously know the dirt," suggested that "Sarah supposedly blames Bristol harshly and openly...for not winning the election, and so she told Bristol she 'owed' it to her to do DWTS so that 'America would fall in love with her again' and make it possible for Sarah Palin to run in 2012 with America behind her all the way."

Here's the PSA that got Keith Olbermann's knickers in a knot:

And here's Olbermann's response:

What is a PSA? This column is very poorly written and barely understandable. It looks like Ms. Palin's response on facebook was better communicated than either this writter or Mr. Olberman was capable of doing.

PSA – Public Service Announcement. Bristol’s response on facebook was well-written because she – obviously – didn’t write it. I’ll give her credit for typing the message in; but rest assured, a publicist wrote it.

Sorry Bristol, I beg to disagree with you. Is this: Do as I preach and not as I do!! You were not able to prevent that teenage pregnancy. Why do you tell others to do it. Do you expect that they are angles and will not fall in the same trap as you did!!

The proper headline would be:

"Ghostwriter fires back at Olbermann"

If the Palins' outrage is ghostwritten. Give me a break - Bristol uses words like "canard" and "incredulity"?

She certainly is her mother's daughter.

This is simply the case of the dysfunctional fruit falling from the tree! It still baffles me how the moronic Palin and her 'rubenesque' daughter garner so much attention. Stupid is as stupid does.

Totally obvious that Bristol Palin did not write that. "carard"? "incredulity"- not Bristol words. Her's would more likely have gone: "yeah, they're just haters, you know?...."
If Bristol Palin hasn't been force fed the Kool Aid up their in Wasilla- she needs to get out of the limelight, go to school and seek a normal life. Otherwise she will constantly be on guard about her weight, her mother, the "hypocracy" of lecturing about abstinence, her lack of personality on stage...she will end up in the Kaste Goselin basket of snakes- and thet never ends well...

Palin's (or ghostwriter) reply was right on. Who better to tell about making a serious mistake than a person who has made one? I notice that the Palin haters on here do not argue with the basic point made on her facebook.

Man, that is some crappy English. Does the Com-Post not have an editor who knows grammar?

"Worst Persons" is just a segment to cast attention on certain absurdities. I agree with Bristol's premise that ex-offenders and those who made mistakes are sometimes the best advisers on said mistakes, but let's not forget who we're dealing with: the Palins. Naturally, they are hypocrites, liars, and potential saboteurs. Can't take them lightly - yet, the "lamestream media" keeps putting them up on a pedestal to be looked at. Tired of hearing about any and all of them, to be honest.

Posted by: fbutler1 | December 3, 2010 10:58 AM | Report abuse

Since there is ZERO chance a normal, intelligent person of Bristol's age would use a word like canard, the chance of her writing something using the word canard is, what, negative one bazillion percent?

Posted by: Observer691 | December 3, 2010 11:04 AM | Report abuse

She knew the word "canard" ? I find that more shocking than anything else.

i find it quite disturbing to find lefty types commenting on "theories" of who wrote the article and the use of "big" words.

i'm going to tell you a little secret-obamagod has speechwriters. he doesn't write his own speeches (too busy playing b-ball). so don't spread that rumor or it will destroy his publicists (yep, he's got a whole team of those too) persona of being a real smart guy. shhh.

The writing style of Palin's post is waaaaay too sophisticated for a teenage high school dropout to have written it. Whoever wrote it for her should, at the very least, have omitted $10 words like "canard."

Olberman spends too much time on lamestream politicians. What Bristol does in not consequential at this point and is not worth the time to discuss in detail. She will be a hero to some but she is more likely to end up hurting Mom's image than enhancing it. The truth about the Palins, who are trying to hide behind fences, both real and digital will eventually be revealed. Just kick back and wait.

Posted by: AlanGoldberg54 | December 3, 2010 11:21 AM | Report abuse

perryrants: Here's the difference between Bristol Palin and Obama, Bush, and all other presidents: When Obama or Bush reads a speech, it still sounds like something you'd expect from that person, whether they wrote it or not. You see, numbnutz, they have speechwriters who understand who will be delivering the speech and write accordingly.

Conversely, whoever writes these posts for any of the Palins is clueless, because, other than the Palinbots, there is not a person alive today who thinks that Bristol Palin talks like this or knows what canard means. Therefore, it sounds moronic for something with words like canard and incredulity to be attached to someone who barely graduated high school and found taking a couple of community college course part-time to be too difficult.

That was probably too much for your tiny Palinbot brain to digest, but you can't say I didn't try.

Posted by: Observer691 | December 3, 2010 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Of course he doesn't. That's what speechwriters are for. However, he also doesn't pretend that he did write them. Bristol's little harangue, by virtue of being posted on her personal Facebook page, is being sold as her own writing.

Go rant about something substantive, Perry.

This isn't Bristol's response. Bristol isn't familiar with basic rules of grammar and spelling. If Bristol responded it would read like this. Keith is a Fa@@0t. He is just jeleous of my families success. He holds no title. My mother is saving America!!!!

How is Bristol's dressing like a Bourbon Street prostitute while grinding with a half naked man promoting Christian abstinence??? Why would her mother promote this?

Posted by: Southsider | December 3, 2010 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Bristol grinds like a prostitute and shakes her breasts like lonely housewife... but PLEASE no premarital sex for you like I enjoyed in Wasilla. DO AS I SAY or you will end up raking in the cash on DWTS and on a paid speaking tour being paid $10,000 a pop.

The Arctic Grifter Jr.'s note in response to Olbermann was hilarious. The GED classes have really, really payed off. I particularly enjoyed "old canard" and "insincere incredulity" like in "Mom, when I told Levi he had knocked me up he accused me of using an old canard and reacted with insincere incredulity"...

Posted by: FoundingMother | December 3, 2010 11:46 AM | Report abuse

Well look. This is Sarah Palin's daughter! Sarah Palin is about as culturally and religiously conservative as one can possibly get and has likely taught her daughter the value of abstinence for her entire life. Thus, Bristol represents Exhibit A in the charge that abstinence only simply does not work even in the families that seem to be the most religiously devoted.

Isn't this really what Olberman is getting at? This gnawing hypocrisy on the right for maintaining such logically absurd positions in the face of overwheming personal evidence in their own families that it simply does not work.

Posted by: jaxas70 | December 3, 2010 11:48 AM | Report abuse

I'm sure that a person who would say 'for real... for real... for real...' and who would have any sort of conversation with that moron 'The Situation', would also have 'canard' and 'incredulity' in her vocabulary....

I think I'll take advice from people with a track record of competence and performance, and not those who have run into the ditch, have seen the light, and now say 'don't do what I did, do what I say you should do'.

I think that it is absolutely wonderful that Keith Olberman feels the desperation that fuels an attack on this already celebrity family. Criticizing a family for the mistakes they made and bringing on a comedian with a seemingly fictional source of information just proves to me that his media coverage is nothing more than a farce. What is it exacly that distinguighes him from TMZ?
Furthermore, what exactly is his argument? That Bristol Palin shouldn't be allowed to speak on abstinence because she had a child? I would consider her the epitome of knowledge on the consequences of pre-marital sex, and I absolutely follow her advice. I have been disappointed by the media before, but this is a classic three-ring circus, personified by his silly little animations and characterizing people as "the worst in the world." It is fantastic that you think Bristol is the worst person in the world for wanting to educate girls; personally I think the worst person in the worst was the man who serially raped and strangled women, but hey, Bristol Palin is also a monster.

Posted by: suekart | December 3, 2010 11:52 AM | Report abuse

This is the sort of monumental hypocrisy on the part of both Bristol and her mother that leads to both of them being caricatured so mercilessly.

Look. If you don't want this sort of public airing of your dirty laundry, stop putting yourself in this position. I am not a blue nose or anything but if Bristol is going to engage in what amounts to a "pole dance" with a half nude man, then preach to the rest of us about abstinence only, then she deserves the sort of rubbing her nose in it that Olberman specializes in.

I see a pattern in Beyonce's sis and Britney Spears' sis all becoming teen moms craving atten giving to a fam member. In Bristol's case she hated her mom and luved wannabe Mayor baby daddy. being with that idiot made her a rebel. Sadly all these fams become ruined pushing the kids into entertainment. NOT one of these girls was told by a parent "Take you a@ to school or do something pos with your life!"Instead they hear "Oh you are as talented as your sibling so do your thang" or in Bristol's case "Girl I'm tryin to be Pres so get on DWTS for more PR. Who cares ppl hate us and think we're dumb, the MEDIA luvs us and thats made US rich! Plus I'm writing this pointless book taking shots at Michelle and AI so I need the PR by showin up to pretend to support you. H@ no I know I won't win over intelligent Obama but I want money so I'll keep stringing folks along."

However, leave bristol alone because she is just trying to relay a message even though she didn't practice what she is preaching. We all know that she is a teen mom but lets give her some elbow room here. I wouldn't of picked her to be the spoken person but it was done due to name recognition and that was the only reason. Sometimes a name can make a difference on how the message is received by others. I would of choosen someone else to relay the message, like Taylor Swift, Young and popular and she has name recognition..

bristol palin has no shame. She is sexually active and insists on being a spokesperson on abstinence. She is not yet qualified to tell others what to do in anyway. She really ought to look after her child and get herself an education. She has noted that it is impossible to work and go to school and look after a baby. She has stated that it is unrealistic for teenagers to abstain from sex. For such a loose young lady still doing the dirty deed she has some nerve. She is indeed the worst person in the world second only to the ignoramus sarah who herself had her first child eight months along in the pregnancy and it was not premature. The thing I don't understand about the appeal of the Palins is that it seems to rest entirely on them playing the hysterical victim drama queens 24/7.

The Palins exist in a sort of cult of perpetual victimhood.

Sarah seems to be nothing but a sloppy pile of passive aggressive neurosis. That's the sort of person that would hound you from room to room with her screechy/whiny voice until she finally gets what she wants - someone yells at to just be left alone. Then the weeping and screaming starts....

Yeah, why are people so hypnotized by that? Does Scotch smell like Mommy's kisses?

Let's ask Bristol how to spell "canard" and "incredulity." Otherwise, her Twit appears written by a hack at the Heritage Institute or a Tea Party scholar.

Observer691,

Which of Bristol's arguments do you dispute ?

1. In order to have credibility as a spokesperson, it sometimes takes a person who has made mistakes.

2. Parents warn their children about the mistakes they made so they are not repeated.

3. Former gang members travel to schools to educate teenagers about the risks of gang life.

4. Recovered addicts lecture to others about the risks of alcohol and drug abuse.

5. And yes, a teen mother talks about the benefits of preventing teen pregnancy.

Posted by: pvilso24 | December 3, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Palin-haters can't dispute a single one of Bristol's arguments because they are common-sense and actually mirror typical liberal initiatives.. reformed guest speakers at schools etc.

Hatred blinds them... yet is almost inexplicable.

If Bristol was a Democrat.. she would be a Hero of the Left.

The narrative: A young working-class teenage mother climbing back from a failed relationship... to become a successful spokes-person.. to earn enough to support her young son and herself. To become every young girls dream and become 2nd-runner-up in Dancing with the Stars ! Liberals would be estatic and joy-filled. That this young girls success happens to a working-class Christian conservative fills them with envy and hate.

Who knew liberal compassion was so shallow ?

I think we will see Bristol speaking out against her mother in the not too distant future. That relationship just seems fishy. Willow on the other hand appears to be her mother's daughter. And speaking of "manning up", Todd sure is the junior partner in that relationship.

I too would like to call on the Post to just stop reporting on this woman and her family. Leave it to Fox to paste her nasty mug on their channel. (note how often this woman uses her tongue to dislodge some nasty crap from her front choppers every time she speaks.

No. I don't find her attractive. Leave that nasty pug to the desperate Repug types. Does anyone else think Sarah looks like Peg Hill?

Lisa, what is your point for writing this article?

Keith Olbermann only said what many of us had been thinking all along about Bristol doing a sex ed Public Service Announcement (PSA) commercial to teach abstinence and safe safe to young teens, when she has already missed the announcement her damn self.

I guess if she had of done the PSA before she got knocked up, then her sex-ed PSA would have been more believable.

I cannot understand why Bristol would want to continue subjecting herself to this kind of non-sense. Hasn't she had enough of being the joke of the party, already, or is her controlling money hungry mother marketing Bristol for her own self-serving needs.

There is NO WAY in hell this was written by Bristol Palin. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of listening to her speak knows that she has the vocabulary of a 4th grader and would not know the meaning of "canard" nor "incredulity" let alone how to spell them correctly.

The amazing thing is that Bristol's ghostwriter is smarter than her mothers ghostwriter, who is almost as dumb as Sarah herself.

So where was her kid when she drove her pickup to California to do DWTS and while she was there? Where is the kid while she goes around promoting abstinence. Is she an example of paying the price for her "mistake". Maybe that should be the next DWTS theme - teen mothers for abstinence.

Posted by: timothy2me | December 3, 2010 4:56 PM | Report abuse

um, when one is advocating abstinence for teens yet is a) a teen mother, b) part of a competition of highly sexualised dance, and c) takes part in risque (but funny) PSAs about safe sex, one should not be so indignantly shocked when one is called hypocritical or mocked.

By becoming a public figure through deliberate and willing action, you make yourself fair game.
Attacking Sarah Palin on arguments using her daughter is inappropriate unless Mrs. Palin makes her family part of the public dialogue. This is not an example of malicious and unfair behaviour against Sarah Palin, or even against Bristol. Each woman has thrust herself into the public eye, thus tacitly agreeing to any criticism based on their public actions.

Bristol, you're NOT the best person to be 'teaching' teens about abstinence. The little baby that came out of your hoo-hoo means you know nothing about abstinence.

The only thing you're 'teaching' teens is that you're getting paid to call your son a 'mistake'.....and they're not.

Bristol, shut up until you actually know what you're talking about.

Not a chance that Bristol Palin wrote this reply to Olbermann. The language is far above her education and ability (and sadly even that of her mom). This makes her complaint phony since she can't say it in her own words.

The dances, dresses, the poses, on the Dancing with the Stars were art. Not sexually suggestive.

Posted by: kishorgala

kishorgala if you simply look at the picture above you could not argue that it is not sexually suggestive. While Dancing with the Stars may be art (is is subjective I guess), art can be sexually suggestive and in the case of the dances, dresses, the poses, on Dancing with the Stars they simply are, and that is the art form. As far a Bristol, the hypocrisy of an unwed mother who preaches abstinence but does not practice just makes her a Palin.

Unfortunately, while I agree with most of Olbermann's politics, I find him personally as egomaniacal as Bristol's mother and approximately as likeable. His shows tend to be all about him and whatever point he may have made gets lost in his personal bloviating and self-importance. Most people really don't care where he was on this date in 1985. Ms. Palin, on the other hand, is still young and more than capable of mistakes and for that she should be forgiven.

I am surprised that she did not just give him the finger. She is an example of a neglected teenager that ran wild and is not being used and misused by her mother's driving ambition She is to be pitied but unfortunatly she is very unlikable.

The lil biatch has a bastard son, a witch mommy and is over weight that dances sexual congestures on national TV... but she'll be forgiven? Perhaps by only you. Posted by: b1319795 | December 4, 2010 12:07 PM | Report abuse

Keith needs to take a course on journalism because he sure does not know anything besides opinionated hate rhetoric. He talks alot about Fox News being racist or full of hate and he preaches the very same against others, like his sidekick schultz who labels rush the "drugster". Maybe we need to bring up Keith's own checkered past with women. That may shock some of his fans.

Posted by: purplehaze15 | December 4, 2010 12:34 PM | Report abuse

The analogy that Bristol Palin is the right person to talk about abstinence just like a recovering drug addict is the right person to talk to other drug users trying to clean up is faulty for three reasons:

First, recovering drugs addicts, as just stated, are almost never talking to people who have never used drugs, but to others who are using, and who want to know how the recovering addict got clean. This is called group therapy...

Which brings me to my next point:

How can Bristol credibly tell others to resist a temptation she was not able to resist? This is a classic "do as I say, not as I did." Yes, we can learn from others' mistakes, but wouldn't it be much more effective if the person talking to other kids was someone who had SUCCEEDED in resisting temptation? It just is not effective, from a practical standpoint, to have a "spokesperson" who failed at the task (kind of like training for a marathon and being lectured by a person who was training for a marathon but could not withstand the rigorous schedule needed to succeed).

Which brings me to my third point:

How can Bristol tell others, effectively, "If you do what I did, look at the terrible consequences of that decision - MY SON." Huh?

Aside from how her child will feel when he's old enough to understand this, it, again, is just not credible for her to say that her giving in to her urges caused this horrible outcome that others should keep in mind before they jump in bed.

In conclusion...the best person, again, to spread the abstinence message (which I personally think is pie-in-the-sky, but which I'm basing my comment on today), is someone who succeeded, not failed. Bristol's listeners will have the same reaction others on here will..."who is she to talk?" There's a better way...(but, of course, this isn't about a better way, but about money...and fame...and other motives as well...but that's a topic I'll leave to others...).

Many of the Wash Post articles are muddled and poorly written. Why would a newspaper give hype to the homely, overweight daughter of Sarah Palin? Why would Olberman waste good TV time giving hype to the daughter of Sarah Palin? It's all such brain dead stuff. KUDOS TO KEITH - How proud I am that he said publicly what most everyone else is thinking privately and are too afraid to say outlowd. I agree that Bristol Palin is the worst person in the world, but I would like to take it a step further then just her "PSA". Who is this woman? What has she done in society? If it not for family connections, no one would even know her or her pathetic life and kid, nor give her the time of day. She is a poor excuse for a generic celebrity (someone who is famous for doing absolutely nothing meaningful, but is connected to a famous person). People laugh at her everywhere I go. Every time I see her on TV, she is making a complete fool of herself. Her stint on DWTS was a laugh. I think the judges were so disgusted by Bristol on the show that with fear of aggravating her mother, they took their frustrations out on poor Michael Bolton (who I would rather see on the show then her-he was clearly better). A poor excuse for a human being. Can't think of anything nice that can be said about this loser - Accept - Keith - good for you for speaking up - good for you - you have a lot more support than you think!! What a poor excuse for celebrity wannabe - Bristol - get a real job, be a real mother and keep your fat face and ass out of the media so we no longer have to look at your face. Thanx!
