[Updated] Aaron Sorkin lets TLC and Sarah Palin have it with both barrels

By Lisa de Moraes

This post has been updated:

Sarah Palin is "deranged" and Silver Spring-based cable net TLC "should be ashamed of itself" for airing a program that's all about her - particularly this past Sunday's episode in which she "hunted, killed and carved up a Caribou during a segment of her truly awful reality show 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' on The Now Hilariously Titled Learning Channel," screenwriter/producer Aaron Sorkin said Wednesday.

Aaron Sorkin addressed Sarah Palin via the Huffington Post.

"In Her Defense, I'm Sure the Moose Had It Coming," said Sorkin, blogging on the Huffington Post.

Sorkin appears not to have gotten the memo in which TLC - home to such series as "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," "Hoarding: Buried Alive," "Toddlers & Tiaras," "19 Kids and Counting" and "DC Cupcakes" - officially declared it's no longer channeling learning. These days, the "T," the "L" and the "C" in the basic cable network's name do not stand for anything in particular, the network insists, though its logo includes the words "Live and Learn," so at least they own their mistakes, preemptively.

Maybe we can come up with a new name for the network that, since Nov. 14, has been telecasting Palin's animal-extermination epic - two weeks ago she went fishin' for halibut with her "Dancing With the Stars" runner-up daughter Bristol, fondling the still-beating heart out of one, to share with viewers at home.

Sorkin is well known for his work in the political-drama genre - he's the guy who wrote the screenplay for the flicks "The American President" and "Charlie Wilson's War." Sorkin's also the guy behind NBC's critically acclaimed White House drama "The West Wing." These days, he's adapting Andrew Young's book "The Politician," about former senator John Edwards, into a flick, which will also mark Sorkin's movie-directing debut.

"I'm able to make a distinction between you and me without feeling the least bit hypocritical," Sorkin blogged, getting back to Palin and her series on TLC. (Torturing Lesser Creatures?)

"I don't watch snuff films and you make them," Sorkin told Palin. "You weren't killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion, you were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals. I can make the distinction between the two of us but I've tried and tried and for the life of me, I can't make a distinction between what you get paid to do and what Michael Vick went to prison for doing."

Vick, of course, is the now Philadelphia Eagles quarterback who did time for engaging in organized dogfighting for gambling purposes - and then got his own reality series in which he could rehab his image. That reality series was called "The Michael Vick Project." It did not air on TLC. (Tender Loving Channel?)

Instead, BET bought the Michael Vick gem.

Sorkin did not come up with the snuff-video gag all on his own; the group In Defense of Animals had already given that label to the halibut episode.

But, back to his blog:

"So I don't think I will save my condemnation, you phony pioneer girl," Sorkin continued, now on a roll.

"You didn't just do it for fun and you didn't just do it for money. That was the first moose ever murdered for political gain. You knew there'd be a protest from PETA and you knew that would be an opportunity to hate on some people, you witless bully. What a uniter you'd be - bringing the right together with the far right."

In fact, Palin had already fired back at critics of the episode - about nine hours before the episode aired.

"Unless you've never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight's episode. I remain proudly intolerant of anti-hunting hypocrisy," Palin wrote shortly before noon Sunday on her Facebook page.

Sorkin thinks the whole grizzly mama made-for-TV persona is oversold. "I'm in film and television, Cruella, and there was an insert close-up of your manicure while you were roughing it in God's country. I know exactly how many feet off camera your hair and make-up trailer was," said Sorkin, who's also the screenwriter for the recently released flick "The Social Network."

We contacted TLC (Tiny Little Cupcakes?) to ask if anyone at the network had something to say about Sorkin's blog post.

"There was no hair and makeup" trailer when shooting the Sarah-shoots-a-caribou episode, a rep for TLC (Too Little Class?) told the TV Column. In fact, the rep said, neither the network nor show producer Mark Burnett hired hair and makeup for Palin during the making of this series. There is one scene in which Palin is seen getting hair and makeup done for a photo shoot while on a book tour, but those services were provided by the book-tour organizer, said the rep, who declined to comment on any other aspect of Sorkin's blog post.

But Palin had something to say Wednesday about Sorkin's Michael Vick gag: "So a left-wing Hollywood producer thinks there is no 'distinction' between harvesting healthy, wild organic protein to feed my family and engaging in dog fighting?" Palin wrote in an e-mail to the Associated Press. "I didn't know anyone ate dogs, tanned the hides, and made boots out of them."

"Sarah Palin's Alaska" premiered with an average audience of 5 million viewers, which is the biggest audience for a series launch in TLC history, but the show has lost a large chunk of that audience since. The halibut-fishing episode averaged 3 million viewers. And the most recent episode - the one in which Sarah nailed the caribou - averaged 2.8 million viewers Sunday at 9 p.m.

You can read Sorkin's the blog post here in its entirety.

And here's the clip TLC sent to the press to promote last Sunday's episode of "Sarah Palin's Alaska":

ARe you kidding! The woman will kill her children if it gets her more money, period. She is far more interested in money than political position.

Aaron...Just get over it. Sarah shot an animal, removed as much usable meat as possible and brought it home to be eaten. Yes...for a hunter, it is great sport to track and take animal. The meat is also far healthier than the beef that you buy at the grocery store as well. She didn't just shoot an animal and leave it there to rot. In case you noticed, where Sarah and her father went to hunt was so remote that the only way in or out was via a small two seat aircraft....otherwise, they would have taken the entire caribou home to harvest every bit of meat possible from it.

The left-wingers need to get a life and not try to spoil the lives of other people.

Do children realize that Sarah Palin shot a reindeer? That's RUDOLPH, boys and girls, and Sarah enjoyed killing and gutting him. What a monster she is. Sorkin's right, it's nothing more than a glorified animal snuff video.

Here is a link to a Washington Post article dated October 21,2004. It is an article covering then-presidential-candidate John Kerry while he was on a hunting trip. My question for Mr. Sorkin is this: Since John Kerry was basically doing the same thing that Sarah Palin was doing, do those criticisms that you leveled at Sarah Palin also apply to John Kerry? Here is that link:

We need to compete on the world stage in education, China is eating our lunch. Do you take Sarah Palin seriously in the area of Education?

She presides over a family where no one went past the 12th grade.

Alaska did not help children become educated under Palin. I truly question her intellect and motives.

Fairness3 - what an ironic nick.

Sarah does have a college degree. Not sure about Todd's college experience (if any). Remember that the Palin children are all still very young. The oldest has been serving in the military. The second-oldest has been raising a child and, yes, appearing on DWTS. The youngest three are not out of high school yet. A little perspective and "fairness," please.

I have nothing against hunting, but I love how Palin is saying "in a lot of places in Alaska, there is no grocery store for hundreds of miles," all the while she's holding a coffee cup from a local coffee store.

Sure, in the wild, there are coffee stores around every bend.

I feel bad for any outdoorsmen defending Sarah Palin. She makes your sport look stupid. She is really doing you a disservice. Find a better spokesman/woman.

Posted by: denalibeads | December 8, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Palin kills animals for money. She is now ultra wealthy and doesn't need to hunt to feed her family. With all of her running around the lower 48, when does she have time to take care of her children and her household? Is she supervising her daughters so they don't get knocked up? Is she teaching her children brotherhood toward all or just teaching them how to smear and demean decent people like she does. Palin is about celebrity and money. Her supporters have to pay her and her family members for everything. Her husband knows a gift horse when he sees one and he is pushing right behind her to be his moneymaker. What a guy! The Palins are really a disgraceful bunch of halfwits with thin-skin. They truly believe they can ridicule and slander anyone they please but no one better ever retaliate. It is time to empty the sawdust out of Sarah's brain and shut her nasty mouth.

Learning to hunt for food while living in remote places is an essential survival skill, there's nothing phony about it. Imagine if a Polar Bear (and no, they don't speak Ruski and drink Coca-Cola and thank Capitalism. lol) had shown up and Sarah Palin had to shoot it, what would Sorkin say then? If you don't shoot a Polar Bear it will maul and eat you - it considers humans as food up there in Alaska where food is scarce. There are enough survival shows on Discovery channel for none of this to be offensive (they got guys chewing off heads of live snakes or chomping on ants for the protein), only educational for those who are curious and want to know what its like to live in such places. lol.

Anyway, the fact that Sorkin's freaking out means She's done a pretty good job and got some of the back-biting Hollywood crowd jealous of a Star they didn't get to make. lol.

darkasnight1234,

That's the thing. She doesn't live in a remote place. She lives in a populated place ( No, it's not New York City, but there are tons of people around. She's basically in a suburb of Anchorage (which has 350,000 in the metropolitan area). She's a phony. And the conservatives keep buying it.

Two questions:

1. Will Mr. Sorkin be blogging to disparage all the Liberal fishermen in CA and MA who are killing innocent fish?

2. Will Mr. Sorkin be blogging about the innocent Poppy plants he's killing when he snorts it up his nose?

Posted by: JackfromFortLauderdale | December 8, 2010 2:18 PM | Report abuse

I'm NOT defending Sarah Palin, but Aaron Sorkin is wrong. Politicians have been killing animals for "political gain" for as long as there have been politicians. And politicians been doing it on film for as long as there's been film. (Just Google, for example, "Teddy Roosevelt Hunting." Do you suppose he ate the elephant?) Perhaps Mr. Sorkin's memory has been dimmed by drug abuse. (Just Google "Aaron Sorkin Mushrooms").

TLC must stand for The Loony Channel. Who else would put a quitter on TV, except for Fix News, where she can lie with the best of them. Scaraboo Barbie.

Posted by: COLEBRACKETT | December 8, 2010 2:30 PM | Report abuse

My only comment is why would anyone kill an animal if they don't need to in order to either eat or prevent themselves from being injured? Killing an animal for fun or for publicity is grotesque, because it demonstrates an utter lack of empathy. I have no problems with an Inuit killing a caribou because his family needs food for the winter. When it is a millionaire (which Palin is by now) doing it for the sake of TV, it's disgusting.

Hey, Lisa . . . . You asked for suggestions for appropriate title words for "TLC". . .
to whit:

"Tender Loving Care"

OR

"Torturing Lesser Creatures"

Posted by: lufrank1 | December 8, 2010 2:41 PM | Report abuse

I agree with longtimedem. If Sorkin doesn't like Caribou Barbie TV, he doesn't have to watch. She's ridiculous, but she's entitled to go hunting and to have her own TV show. If enough people join me in ignoring it, it will be canceled. I also agree with the Half Guv on one point: If you have leather shoes and furniture, or you eat meat, go easy on the moral outrage.

For next season, TLC should have pit Sarah Palin against Mantracker in Alaska, and let both of them use live ammunition. Now that would be worth watching.

True, but the hunting and killing of an innocent animal wasn't on national television for the world to see and it wasn't for political or monetary gain. Big difference.

Hence, it's not about you or your hunting buddies. It's about Sarah (holding a Starbucks cup of coffee and saying they don't have a grocery store for 500 miles) Palin, who kills animals for sport, political and monetary gain. The criticism is about her fakeness and hypocrisy, not really about the sport of hunting. If she likes to hunt for sport, say so, but don't say you need the meat because it's obvious you don't, and she's too stupid to realize how obvious it is.

Sarah Palin.......for continuously pretending to be intelligent, pretending to be an 'outdoor sports-woman', pretending to be a good mother, pretending to be a Christian.

And the Award goes to..........Sarah Palin for her intense, 'true to life' portrayal of a hypocritical liar.

Wow. If this thread is any indication, I dread the prospect of Palin ever running for president. The lefties' fingernails-on-chalkboard screeching is already deafening on the internet...if she were to actually win and become president the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the newsrooms and lefty cesspools of the intertubes will be enough to break eardrums.

An honest assessment: Palin is remarkably more like a real person than the average politician. She has her fake moments, but overall I like her. She's intelligent enough to be president. We were advised that the current resident of the white house was the smartest man alive, and look at the state of things after two years of him. I have seen no sign that she's after money...but if there are signs I have missed I'd love to see them stacked up against the average money earmarked by the average congresscritter of either party...just for perspective.

There is much beating of breasts over how horrible it is that Palin kills a caribou. I'm glad we didn't have the media spotlight on my neighbor when he and his family went out this fall and filled 4 whitetail tags. He gave me a box of meat and it's delicious. And just to cover some of the lefty talking points, 1) the meat is MUCH healthier than beef or pork 2) the animals lived free, presumably happy lives unlike many of the chickens or cows or pigs most people eat from the grocery store 3) none of them lived more than a minute or two after being shot and certainly weren't tortured and finally 4) heck YES hunting is fun.

People evolved to enjoy the hunt. Those of you who place such a premium on a college education (I'm working on a master's right now myself) have you ever actually taken an anthropology course? Have you ever examined the human tooth? It's designed for an OMNIVORE. That means we eat meat. How to eat meat unless by hunting (agriculture not yet having been invented)? Some theorize that we were scavengers, but somehow I never get the urge to go fry up the raccoons or squirrels that get flattened on the road. I do, however, LOVE to hunt and fish.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying Palin's masterful playing of the leftosphere. I don't know of anyone else who can tie half the blogosphere in knots with a single facebook post, or drive people to condemn in vicious terms things that their own neighbors or they themselves do. It's wonderful. I thought Bush was pretty good at that, but Palin's going to be even better than him before she's done. She has more space in her enemies' heads than anybody I've ever seen. In that way, she's a born politician.

Those of us that live in the reality of Alaska-and subsist living off the land ..would not be taking a $44,000 hunting trip and filming it to exploit the land , the animals and the people in our Great Land. In my reality we have a greater reverence for what has been given us for thousands of years. It is a sad day to have to witness animals/people and resources exploited for the political gain of a narcissistic ego. And as for the rural lifestyle she purports to find necessary to hunt-there are numerous large supermarkets within 5 miles of her home in Wasilla..

Aaron Sorkin has human blood on HIS hands. He's in no position to criticize Sarah Palin for shooting a wild animal. Sorkin used illegal cocaine to the point that it ended him up in rehab. His demand for that drug directly fueled the drug cartels in Mexico which are killing people in record numbers and turning that country into a completely corrupted pseudo-nation. Sorkin's illegal drug use, and those who share that habit, are the DIRECT cause of the violence in Mexico and in this nation related to the distribution of that illegal product. And why isn't Sorkin in jail instead of making millions of dollars? Well, he's a good LIBERAL who helped elect Obama. He's a "celebrity" and we certainly don't hold the drug users accountable for the mayhem they directly cause in their supply chain!

Sorkin is in no position to moralize about Sarah Palin or anyone else. It's people like Aaron Sorkin who should be held up to public condemnation, not treated as someone who got "sick". Consuming ILLEGAL drugs is not a sickness, it's a crime. And a crime that fuels a violent criminal underworld that destroys lives and families around the globe.

I was just wondering how many abortions the women in Aaron Sorkin's life have had.

One, two, three... more? I would venture to guess that there are more than a few since he is a far left dolt and I would assume most of the women he would be involved with would be the same... and since liberal feminist women have abortions as birth control, gosh, it could be a lot.

So, lets see.... kill the unborn infant at will.... big deal, its a lifestyle choice.
Shoot a caribou for food...how terrible and devastating.

How about "The Lamebrain Channel"? The Loser Channel? Paying that idiot to do shows demonstrates how stupid they are, so if the shoe fits? (I refuse to watch TLC anymore- only saw the "shooting" part because it was shown as a clip on the View or some show.) Having grown up with hunting and having hunted myself, the first thing I would say is it is obvious that the Wicked Witch of the North is not a hunter. I'm beginning to think that poor caribou was a tame one they had standing up there not realizing the humans that it should have shown fear of, where going to be shooting at it. It is my experience you rarely get a chance for a second shot, let alone have the opportunity for many as she did (she couldn't even jack a shell in herself?) because she can't hit the broadside of a barn. And that caribou was standing still, broadside toward her and she couldn't hit it after what 5, 6 shots? I don't know if she ever did because they didn't show on the clip, but I was out-shooting many men at 12 years old, so gender has nothing to do with it. She demonstrates she is not the hunter she claims to be. Since she has not held a hunting or fishing license* in the recent years she claimed she was out hunting and fishing, was she doing it illegally? (*According to the AK Dept. of Fish and Game) In a speech a couple months ago she said she had just been out on a hunting trip but the season had just opened so she couldn't have been on a legal hunt and still been standing there giving a speech in the lower 48. (And yes, she claimed it was an Alaskan hunting trip and she still had "blood under her nails". With no hunting license.) So perhaps the "lady" doth lie too much? My problem with her on the hunt trying to shoot something her lack of skill demonstrates she doesn't normally do- is Sarah Palin doesn't need to hunt for food. The majority of Alaskans who do go are there to supplement their food budget with meat they kill. Since that isn't what she is doing and because they had the film crew and the abnormal behavior of the caribou just standing there all the while it was being shot at, I question how set up the whole thing was. I think they used a tame caribou to make it look good and that is despicable, even for failin' Palin.

"Unless you've never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight's episode. I remain proudly intolerant of anti-hunting hypocrisy," Palin wrote. So basically anyone who abuses a dog or cat is warmly embraced by Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin represents America, only it happens to be the ugliest parts of America she represents.

THANK YOU philipjames1!!! It is so much easier to have you post and demonstrate the absolute stupidity of Sarah Palin fans.

Oh, how can we face Sarah Palin as President? Oh how? Oooooooooh! It must be so hard to be Allen Soarkin. Who is that, again? Sarah's Alaska show has only 3 million viewers? Haha! MSNBC would love to have that many for the whole evening's shows, and probably all day. TLC gets that for one show. It must be frustrating to realize there are other people in America who don't think like you do. Look, either get over it, or impose a fascist banking control and imprison non-cooperative (example, Climate Change "deniers, or say, Christians). Americans into FEMA camps. OOPS! Sorry, Goldman Suchs, didn't mean to give it all away. Don't worry, nobody would believe it until it happens.

Sorkin's using cocaine again...that's the only excuse for such dumbness from the king of TV show producing perverts.

Plumber, this line from your post is why liberals get so wild: She has more space in her enemies' heads than anybody I've ever seen. In that way, she's a born politician.

You seem to forget that FELLOW AMERICANS are not enemies. Sarah Palin has no enemies in this country unless they are in her head.

What in the world were you thinking? Do you honestly think each half of this country is the enemy of the other? What happened to reasoned discourse and gentlemanly contest on the field of honor? Now when someone disapproves of another's behavior they become the enemy.

Sad, sad, sad, and why I won't vote conservative.

I loved watching Sarah Palin's Alaska; however, I could not watch the episode where she killed a caribou. I have to admit watching the halibut episode was not pleasant where they had Bristol hitting the halibut over and over to "stun" the fish to protect the meat. Yes, I eat meat and fish; however, I am trying very hard to stop. I guess it is easier to eat meat from the grocer where you try not to think about the killing of livestock; however, even that makes me sick lately and keeps me from eating chicken and such. Please try not to be to harsh towards me as it is difficult to change after fifty years but I am honestly trying. I do like Sarah Palin for the most part and wanted a copy of her first book but didn't buy it when I found out it had a chapter about butchering a moose(one of my favorite animals). I didn't vote for John Kerry mostly because of his carrying that poor dead goose around like it made him a big man. Let's see a defenseless goose against an idiot carrying a gun...where is the fairness in that? Also, if it is true that the caribou on Palin's show just stood there being shot at, I think something was wrong there. Don't most animals run when hearing gunshots? What is the real story on that Sarah? By the way, I am still a big fan of Todd Palin as well and I don't condemn him because he did not go to college...neither did my parent's but they did a great job surviving and caring for their five children. I also know people who are very intelligent but have no common sense when it comes to everyday living...a degree doesn't automatically let you know right from wrong. Common sense and living a decent life does.

I left out a very important note on my last post; although I like Sarah Palin I wouldn't vote for her because I feel it should be a prerequite that presidential candidates served in the military. My son is a Marine and if the President is to choose when and where our sons and daughters go to war, they should know the fear of being on the front lines or have gone through the discipline of the military life. SUPPORT OUR MILITARY, PRAY FOR THEIR SAFETY, AND MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Lisa, you and Alan could not bring yourselves to look at Palin's action in any way outside of political correctness, could you? THAT is cowardly. I suppose you and Alan have trouble getting quiche out from between your teeth, with your vegetarian diets, right? Thus contributing more greenhouse gas into our atmosphere than the average person - but you and Alan are above average, right? If you eat meat in ANY form, then you are no less hypocritical than the other ant-hunt/Palin posters on this thread. Palin went out and killed her own - you have some unknown do it for you. I know Alan (and you, perhaps) support(s) the murder of the unborn innocent, while at the same time condemning the death penalty, even for the worst of the worst. I can't wait for "The Big One" to hit in California. Folks like you and Alan will still be waiting to be served by servants and waiters while starving...
