Grammy Awards ratings up slightlycompared to last year [Updated]
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: CBS has re-issued its Grammy ratings and now says the show attracted 26.66 million people instead of 26.55 million. So Sunday night's show attracted about 790,000 more viewers than last year's Grammycast -- still a small-ish increase compared to recent seasons. But it also becomes the biggest Grammy crowd since 2000.
UPDATE: Despite a lineup that was choc-a-bloc with bells and whistles -- including Mick Jagger's first ever Grammy on-stage performance, rare TV coming-out-of-mothballs for Barbra Streisand and what's left of Bob Dylan, Eminem's first post-Chrysler-ad-debut trophy-show appearance, and the unveiling of Lady Gaga's new prosthetic shoulders, this year's Grammy Awards only attracted 680,000 more people than last year's.
CBS did note, however, Sunday's trophy show clocked its biggest audience since 2001. But last year's show had logged 25.9 million viewers. Meanwhile, the 2009 Gramamycast had only averaged 19 million viewers. So the 2010 Grammy show copped nearly 7 million viewers than the '09 show. And that '09 trophy show had logged nearly 2 million more viewers than in '08.
Now those are ratings hikes!
Once again, CBS put on a Grammy trophy show that gave us much to think about: Will Lady Gaga's shoulder prosthetics become the next new trend? Why did Mick Jagger keep shoving the guy with the guitar away from him -- does he have space issues? What happened to all the love the Recording Academy was going to show this year to Eminem? "The Suburbs"? Album of the year? Really?
Meanwhile, enjoy these Grammy moments:
