Democrats Send Colgan Some Help

Anita Kumar

Virginia Democrats are hoping to pick up at least four seats in the state Senate but word is they are worried about losing one of their own: Sen. Charles J. Colgan of Prince William.

To underscore how vulnerable they think Colgan may be when voters go to the polls next Tuesday both of the state Democratic party's superstars will be appearing with him this week.

On Tuesday, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine will be with Colgan in Dale City. On Thursday, former governor Mark Warner will be with him in Haymarket.

Kaine moved up a news conference in Colgan's district last week to talk about construction on the final phase of the revamped Gainesville interchange -- an announcement Colgan attended.

Republican Bob FitzSimmonds is running against Colgan.

It amazes me that Senator Colgan might lose his re-election bid, after serving, what, 32 years? It amazes me that the voters of district 29 are even considering replacing Colgan now, because if the Dems win control of the State Senate, Colgan stands to become chairman of Finance Committe, and can significantly influence the flow of tax revenue TO Northern VA instead of to other parts of the Commonwealth. If Colgan loses, then Northern VA will again have some politician, who cares not a whit about the problems of Northern VA, as the chairman of the powerful Finance Committee. Now, getting rid of the nutjob AKA Bob Marshall (delegate, 13th District), who spends all of his time on idiotic legislation that never even gets out of committee - THAT would be a good thing. But, voting Colgan out when his seniority makes him eligible for much influence in Richmond, especially if the Dems win control of the State Senate? THAT is simply amazing that it is even a concern. And I hope the pundits are wrong.
