Richmond Editor Named New Kaine Spokesman

Anita Kumar

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) appointed Gordon Hickey, political editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, as his new press secretary.

Hickey, 57, of Richmond, has been a reporter and editor for more than 25 years, working at the Waukesha (Wisc.) Freeman, the Progress-Index in Petersburg, the Richmond News Leader and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

"I have known and respected Gordon Hickey's work as a journalist since my first days serving on Richmond City Council," Kaine said. "His experience as a working journalist and his reputation for fairness and integrity will help our administration continue to serve Virginians well by being accessible and helpful to members of the media who document our activities and initiatives."

Hickey succeeds Kevin Hall, who is leaving to join Mark Warner's U.S. Senate campaign.

"As a Richmond City Hall beat reporter in the 90's, and as editor of political coverage for the Times-Dispatch since 2006, I have closely observed City Council member, Mayor, Lieutenant Governor and now Governor Kaine with the objective eyes of the journalist," Hickey said. "I am excited at the prospect of now applying those experiences and working with my former media colleagues in this challenging new role."
