Va GOP Has Edge in Money

Tim Craig

After being badly outspent by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and the Democrats in last year's state legislative elections, Virginia Republicans have at least one reason to be optimistic as they gear up for this fall's elections.

According to year-end campaign finance reports released today, the Virginia Republican Party has twice as much money in the bank as the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Republicans reported $219,524, compared to the Democrats' $71,900.

The GOP advantage comes after the state Democratic Party spent $5.4 million in October, November and December, compared to the $1.8 million spent by the Virginia Republican Party, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.
Kaine's also drained his bank account in helping Democrats win control of the Senate and pick up four seats in the House.

Kaine's political action committee, Moving Virginia Forward, had $80,000 in the bank as of Dec. 31. Kaine spent about $2.1 million during the last quarter, including the $1.1 million he transferred to the state Democratic Party, which helps to show how it outspent the Republicans. Democratic House and Senate candidates also gave more than a $1 million to the state party so it could send out mail or other advertisements on their behalf.
