Oleszek May Run Again for Senate

Steve Fehr

Democrat Janet Oleszek, who lost to Sen. Ken Cuccinelli by 101 votes in last year's election, says she's ready for a rematch in 2011.

At the Fairfax County Democratic Committee Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner Sunday night, Oleszek said she thinks she will be able to beat Cuccinelli (R-Fairfax) the next time.

Before that race, however, Oleszek said she plans to work hard next year to keep Cuccinelli from winning his bid for attorney general.

A Cuccinelli victory next year would actually enhance Oleszek's goal of being elected to the Senate because he would have to step down.

But Oleszek said Cuccinelli is "Fairfax's problem" so she prefers that county's increasingly liberal voters take care him in 2011.

"All I can say is I hope she is running my opponent's campaign" in the attorney general's race, Cuccinelli said. "I don't think she is very good at it."

If Cuccinelli seeks reelection, he will amost certainly be targeted by Democrats. Oleszek will probably not be the only Democrat that tries to take him on in, especially considering she came up short last year, even though two other Democrats won their Senate races in Fairfax County.

Ken Cuccinelli is a POS, but I have to believe that Fairfax Democrats will find someone, anyone more capable than Janet Oleszek to run in the next three years. This has to be some sort of face-saving move to keep her political career alive, but who is going to take her seriously now? I really wish that she had stayed on the FCPS school board where she might have actually done some good. Now we are stuck with Liz Bradsher whose sole purpose on the SB appears to be to coerce FXCO taxpayers to fund an unneeded middle school at South County. Meanwhile, schools like West Springfield HS are practically falling down around the students.

Let's hope she has the good sense to stay away from Ben Tribbett this time.

That guy is a campaign virus.

If the Fairfax Democrats back her for another bid it will be a huge mistake. What our Senate district needs is a sensible moderate candidate, not someone coming from the extreme left such as Oleszek (not to mention obvious incompotence). Obviously there is a sizable centrist voting block in the district who simply couldn't stand to vote for her this last cycle. I'm betting that the Republicans would put up a moderate candidate if Cuccinelli was to actual win the AG but his chances in that race are slim-to-none.

What is it with these politicians? Do they really believe their own campaign literature? While a pleasant person, she was a rotten candidate with no substance. Webb is a bad candidate, too, and people are talking about him for VP? He didn't win VA, Sen. Allen, and I'm no fan of his, lost it. These candidates live in an alternate reality.

If we want to follow the Webb example, can't we just get Davis to run as a Demoncrat?

The headline makes it sound like she's running against Warner.

I agree -- Cuccinelli is awful, but Janet Oleszek is NOT the answer. I spent probably two hours talking to her personally at various points in her last campaign, and whenever I asked a question she had NO ANSWER AT ALL. No idea of what to do. Her ideas: do lots of things that require money, and do nothing to GET that money. And she's extremely ill-informed about higher education matters as well. She told me that we bring in too many out of state students to our colleges, who then go back to their states with their VA-funded education ... which forces more VA students to go out of state for college, and they then stay there, so we lose our K-12 investment in them. Huh?? So out-of-state students coming in leave, but VA students going out of state stay? When 90% of the questions I asked her were answered with "well, I don't know," she lost my vote.

Ben Tribbet's criticism of Oleszek cost her the senate election. It was only 92 votes.

His notlarrysabato blog rantings have kept Byrne campaign from catching fire.

It's Larry's fault for working with Tribbet, too.
