From the Floor: En Route to Denver

Chrisi West

Chrisi West is a Virginia delegate to the Democratic National Convention who will be blogging for Virginia Politics from Denver. She is from Alexandria, in Fairfax County.

My adventure to Denver began early this morning, when my plane finally took off from the runway at 6 a.m. It had been a long time coming, and although I'd only slept for about three hours last night I was still fired up and ready to go when my alarm went off at 4 a.m.

My fellow delegate and friend, Keith, and I were on a flight with a transfer in Dallas, where we met some of our fellow travelers and Democrats. We could spot them in the airport by the Clinton and Obama buttons, T-shirts and hats they all seemed to be wearing. And those that weren't wearing campaign gear identified themselves as speakers or press, also headed to Denver. And they were everywhere!

I hadn't realized the true enormity of this event, though, until I met two Obama supporters headed to Denver in the hope that they could somehow attend Sen. Obama's speech on Thursday night.

They left Washington, D.C., with us, got on a plane, and were headed to another city halfway across the country just on the off chance that someone would have a spare ticket for them to see history in the making. One man didn't even have a place to stay, he just wanted to find a way to be there.

I think he would've slept in a bathtub if he had to, though I don't think it will come to that!

They were two regular people like Keith and I who are just inspired by Sen. Obama's message. Two strangers, now allies in a once-in-a-lifetime contest. I hope to run into them again during the week to see if this moment in history, this convention, is meeting all of their expectations. I hope it is.

As for me--I'm still fired up, and ready to head to Red Rocks with the rest of the Virginia delegation to celebrate the "opening night" of my first-ever Democratic National Convention.
