Joe McCain Says Inner Suburbs Are "Communist"

Tim Craig

Sen. John McCain's brother, Joe, made an apparent joke today that Democratic-leaning Alexandria and Arlington are "Communist country."

Speaking at an event in support of his brother in Loudoun County, Joe McCain said, "I've lived here for at least 10 years and before that about every third duty I was in either Arlington or Alexandria, up in communist country," according to a Washington Post reporter who was there. Joe McCain, who like his brother is a veteran of the Vietnam war, then apologized, but he drew laughter from the GOP faithful at the event.

Joe McCain's remarks may not sit well with some residents of Arlington and Alexandria, who by the way include his brother.

John McCain owns a condominium in Arlington County. The McCain campaign's national and Virginia headquarters are also located in Arlington County.

"This was Joe McCain's unsuccessful attempt at humor," said McCain spokeswoman Gail Gitcho. "John McCain and Sarah Palin are committed to winning the support of voters in Northern Virginia and understand the region's importance to victory statewide."

Maybe Joe McCain is trying to tell us all that John McCain is actually a communist and thinks he is running for the KGB.

Maybe John McCain forgot that he owns a home in "Communist Country"That is what happens when you are rich and don't understand how the middle and lower class live. Words such as Communist, Socialist are key words for rich people to put down the poor. Just because they can buy almost everything does not mean that others can afford to live how they do!

Is he for real? The McCain camp must be getting really desperate if they've got his brother out there spouting this crap. It's sort of sad that in his manic quest McCain has abandoned any principles he might have once had and sunk to this level.

Posted by: laSerenissima | October 4, 2008 11:02 PM | Report abuse

What indicates that they're not communist?

Posted by: Andrew Travis | October 5, 2008 12:02 AM | Report abuse

To LaSeren this wasn't McCain this was his brother. McCain's headquaters are in Arlington and he owns a condo there. Enough already. McCain isn't responsible for his brother just like Bill Clinton wasn't responsible for his brother. Enough of the the McCain bashing. His brother made a stupid joke.

If you'd ever been in Alexandria, you'd realize how wealthy a community it is. He's probably referring to how those two cities have driven the liberal movement in Virginia, causing its' swing-state status.

"Say it ain't so Joe" comes to mind. It's obvious Joe McCain is a shoot from the lip... act first, think later man, just like his brother John. Typical Republican... just start name calling when you're short on ideas and out of solutions.

I live in Virginia and I find McCain's statements very offensive. Why don't we pay attention on how to fix this economy instead of playing the name game like a bunch of little kids?

All this comes out when McCain doesn't have a clue what to do about the economy and Palin's first man is subpoenaed to court. She has already said during the VP debate that she wants to extend the power of the VP. I find that scary since she is already being investigated for abusing her power of authority in Alaska.

John McCain himself is not short on jokes. During the Clinton administration John McCain joked

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

The joke was captured by many reporters and made the headlines. McCain at first tried to deny that he said that joke. But there were many reporters who reported it as first hand news. McCain then went to president Clinton and confessed that he had indeed joked about Chelsea Clinton and apologized to him.

Seems like the posters here think this chicago machine politician is god.

What economic experience does Obama have?

None, you far left liberals cheated hillary out of the nomination.

Hillary was the policy wonk. Obama has no business or economic experience.

Obama thought he was on the banking committee when he wasn't.

John McCain never had principles. Historically a trouble maker in high school, at the Naval Academy..." I broke every rule and then some" he muses. He graduated with the bottom five of his class.

Playboy! Yes. Maverick? No. A maverick is "unlabeled".

McCain's brand is Opportunism. As the son and grandson of Navy Admirals, he not only graduated, undeservedly, from the Naval Academy, he was given five US Naval Aircraft.

He crashed the first three, and was involved in the loss of the fourth aboard the USS Forrestal, when his aircraft was either the cause or the effect of one of the most horrific fires in Naval history, with a loss of many aircraft and over a hundred lives.

He was airlifted off of the still burning aircraft carrier, and given yet another Naval aircraft, his fifth, which he promptly lost, and found himself a POW.

His incompetence as a pilot was evident certainly after the loss of the second aircraft. He was not a test pilot, he was a playboy, break the rules jockey and they just kept on giving him more milions of dollars worth of aircraft to pilot!

After his stint in the Hanoi Hilton he came home to a profoundly injured wife ( due to a car accident). He was given a gig as Naval liaison in Washington, started fooling around and met Cindy...young RICH and connected. McCain divorced Carol, his first wife, and married Cindy a month later.

Shortly thereafter, he resigned from the Navy and lo and behold became a junior Senator from Arizona, Cindy's home state.

McCain was a big time buddy of Charles Keating, the architect of the most previous banking scandal. They were known as the Keating Five and cost the American taxpayer $2 billion plus.

McCain is an old fool, who has been a kept man for the past 25 years. He's no maverick. I can label him. He's pure Narcissistic Opportunism.

Joe McCain (that's was Joe McCain, not Joe McCarthy, right?)doesn't realize that the Cold War is over.

John McCain doesn't realize that the Vietnam is over.

And, apparently Jeff still doesn't realize that Hillary LOST! And did that on her own.

Joe McCain was directing his comments to the hate-mongers of Loudon County, Virginia.

Senator McCain plagiarized parts of Governor George C. Wallace 1964 speech: “my friends“, “country first“, “stand with me” are taken from the July 4, 1964 speech by Governor George C. Wallace.

“And, my friends, where there are no property rights, there are no human rights. Red China and Soviet Russia are prime examples.” … “ We can win. We can control the election of the president in november. "

"Our object must be our country, our whole country and nothing but our country.
If we will stand together--the people of this state--the people of my state--the people throughout this great region--yes, throughout the United States--then we can be the balance of power. We can determine who will be the next president. "

Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace continued to resist the demands of John F. Kennedy and the federal government to integrate the Alabama's education system. On 5th September he ordered schools in Birmingham to close and told the the New York Times that in order to stop integration Alabama needed a "few first-class funerals."

On Sunday, 15th September, 1963, a white man was seen getting out of a white and turquoise Chevrolet car and placing a box under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Soon afterwards, at 10:22 a.m., the bomb exploded killing 4 little black girls - Denise McNair (11), Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Robertson (14) and Cynthia Wesley (14). The four girls had been attending Sunday school classes at the church. Twenty-three other people were also hurt by the blast.

Again, McCain and Palin complaint against newspapers is taken from the George Wallace speech of Jan. 1963:

"Whoever heard of truth put to the worst in free and open encounter? We couldn't get the truth to the American people."

"You and I know that that's extremely difficult to do where our newspapers are owned by out-of-state interests. Newspapers which are run and operated by left-wing liberals, Communist sympathizers, and members of the Americans for Democratic Action and other Communist front organizations with high sounding names."
"However, we will not be intimidated by the vultures of the liberal left-wing press. We will not be deceived by their lies and distortions of truth. We will not be swayed by their brutal attacks upon the character and reputation of any honest citizen who dares stand up and fight for liberty."

I have been warning now for months:
McCain, most of his campaign managers, his VP pick...and now his brother.

THESE PEOPLE ARE SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS TO THIS COUNTRY. McCain is a smoldering mountain of rage, anger and irrational behavior. I don't know which one it is, but he has a mental illness; probably several personality disorders.
He's had a menatl illness since he was 5-6 years old. Do your research. Evidence of his extreme behavior even exists in his own books, which were written by his Chief of Staff

No more demented person has ever held a Senators office, since McCarthy

The North has been continuously smuggling weapons and troops into the South via the Appalachian Trail. The only way to stop this aggression is to resume bombing runs targeting the North's industrial core. Peace negotiations are just a stall tactic. They won't rest until the whole of Virginia is united under communist rule.

After the McCarthy-like, witch-hunt-like Patriot Bill and illegal wire tapping, this is NOT FUNNY.

It's time that McCain's family started watching Obama speak and learn a few lessons from a stable, mature group of people. I really, honestly don't know how Obama is strong enough to deal with all the complete BS from his opponents. I think surviving this campaign of ridiculousness, prejudice, and bigotry more than qualifies him to handle all the tough issues in Washington.

I think Obama has learned much more about the world in his 40-some years than the McCains will ever be capable of learning in their entire lifetimes. Now we know it's a family thing!

I am surprised that no other republican is standing up for John McCain. His closest friend Lieberman is not a republican, but a defector from the democratic party. He defected not out of principle but just to get reelected to the senate when he found that he couldn't get the democratic nomination. I always wondered why he had to call himself a maverick. When you don't get along with colleagues in your own party, you have to say that as a maverick you march to your own tune. McCain is more like an idiot than a maverick. Now that he is getting old and losing most of his brain cells, he is reverting to sleeze and slander as the theme of his campaign. He got potty mouth Palin as the mouth piece to spread the filth around. We haven't really heard any positive things from the McCain camp lately. A desperate angry old man who has forgotten what this country means to most Americans. His view of this country is still fixed in the 60s and 70s when we were fighting the communists. McCains brother still thinks there are communists all over virginia. If McCain gets into the white house his first job will be to fight a war against Virginia, since the two brothers think Virginians are communists.

Look, Joe's right. It nearly is communist country, especially Alexandria. I know, because I live there. I tell the same joke and everybody laughs and that's the end of it. Why does Joe McCain telling it have to alert the media? Oh, I forgot, we're talking about the Washington [Communist] Post, and it gets its feelings hurt if somebody makes a little joke. Puhhhleeeeze, everybody, take a deep breath and REEEEEEEELAAAXXX! Don't fall for the WP's attempt to whip you into frenzy over a silly joke. It's bizarre that the most successful CAPITALIST states in the US - NY and CA - are called 'communist' by the right ... now it seems like the rich, successful areas of VA have become 'communist' because we vote Democratic not Republican. I'm not sure how John McCain thinks he can win by alienating us swing voters.

Finally - Red is the color of communism and the republican party, ironic really.

the true colors start to come out. In these last 30 days you will see the true face of John McCain and the GOP. Hate, hate and fear mongering. No solutions, no policy statements, no plans on how to move the country forward. And yet they continue to try and co-opt Obama's message of change. And Palin is an air head, vindictive and dishonest scum bag! She wants more power than Dick Cheney and seeks to rewrite the constitution.

Remember, McCain opposed the Martin Luther King Holiday. I guess that's what he means when he says that he's a maverick...

Senator McCain,

I am an Iraq War veteran and I writing in reference to a comment (see below) your brother recently made regarding the inner suburbs of the Metro DC area.

My wife and I moved to Alexandria in 2006 and have been impressed with the political climate here. It is an environment where people believe that government can indeed have a role in solving problems such as eradicating poverty, homelessness, energy independence, and promoting free market ideals while still creating a social safety net for victims of capitalism. We have been frustrated over the growing belief by some extremists that Government is always wrong and the free market is always right. If this were the case, then I am sure the recent bailout would have not passed.

Therefore, when those associated with your campaign make such comments and jokes as below, it does not bode well for your election effort. My parents used to always tell me to be careful of what you joke about - since there is 10% truth in every joke. To label people who believe in the power of government to affect change as "communists" is destructive and further polarizes a nation with too much division already.

I encourage you to publicly address this situation and distance yourself from this comment and from this attitude. I believe it will serve you well in your attempts to become the next president of the United States.

Best of luck,
Chris Z
