Taxpayer Group Endorses Gilmore

Anita Kumar

The political action arm of the National Taxpayers Union announced today that the group has endorsed former governor James S. Gilmore III (R) in his U.S. Senate race against former governor Mark. R. Warner (D).

"When he held Virginia's executive position, Jim Gilmore time and again proved his commitment to fiscal responsibility," said Duane Parde, president of the National Taxpayers Union Campaign Fund. "He espoused pro-growth economic policies, chief among them a number of tax cuts, which inspired many similar platforms across the country."

Gilmore has pledged to work to cut taxes, including making permanent the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts permanent, reducing income tax rates, eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax, repealing the death tax and abolishing the marriage tax penalty.

The National Taxpayers Union, the nation's largest grassroots taxpayer organization, has 362,000 members. Campaign Fund endorsements require a unanimous vote on a nonpartisan basis by a five-member committee that includes two independents, one Democrat and two Republicans.

Gilmore slashed funding for schools, police, mental health care and higher education. Health care costs and tuition went through the roof. Local school standards went down. Because of Gilmore, our transportation problems have multiplied to a point we will never catch up with demand.

All Gilmore's rich buddies sat and counted their millions while they laughed at the suckers who elected him. He destroyed Virginia. Then the left all the mess for John Warner to clean up. And John Warner cleaned it up.

Now Gilmore has signed a pledge to burn more carbon based fuels rather than investing in alternative energy and mass transit. Our children are faced with a life time of chronic asthma from Gilmore's polluted air. And our dependence on oil will continue to haunt generations to come.

It's time to show this bum the door for good.

How can you tell a "nonpartisan" group is hardcore conservative? When then endorse a candidate who left behind the largest budget deficit in Virginia history because he "proved his commitment to fiscal responsibility."
