McDonnell Unveils A Pair of New Ads

Anita Kumar

Republican Bob McDonnell is up on air with two new TV ads today, as predicted in this morning's First Click.

The first ad accuses Democrat Creigh Deeds of "disingenuous" and "deceitful" attacks against him. The second is another attempt to appeal to the female vote post-thesis. For this ad, he had his eldest daughter speak about the values her father taught her and her service in Iraq.

Read the scripts below:

"Deceitful"

Virginia newspapers condemn Creigh Deeds' "false" attacks on Bob McDonnell.

Deeds' abortion attacks "smacks of desperation."
Richmond Times-Dispatch, "Campaign 2009: Desperation" August 11, 2009

The Post states, "We're not aware of any legislation (McDonnell) supported to keep contraception away from married couples."
Washington Post, "Fact Check: Contraception" September 17, 2009

"Deeds has deliberately concocted disingenuous deceitful ads."
Virginian-Pilot, "Deeds Has Problem on Transportation" September 16, 2009

Deeds' ads are "not honest," "an outright lie."
Roanoke Times, "McDonnell Didn't Decide Rates" September 18, 2009, Lynchburg News & Advance, "Voters Deserve Details, Specifics from Hopefuls" September 20, 2009
"Deeds has put forward no concrete proposals on any critical issues."
Lynchburg News & Advance, "Voters Deserve Details, September 20, 2009

Creigh Deeds no positive ideas, just dishonest attacks.

"Working Woman"

"I'm Jeanine McDonnell, Bob McDonnell's daughter. When Dad was elected Attorney General, I was a Platoon Leader in Iraq. Whenever I called home, he always said how proud he was of me. Well, I'm proud of my Dad. Raising three daughters, he encouraged us to be independent and to achieve our goals. He has worked to protect women and children from sexual predators and fight domestic violence. Dad grew up in a middle class military family and the values of hard work and respect are ones he has passed on to us. That's my Dad."

Its good to see McDonnell calling Deeds out for all his angry, negative campaigning based on lies. I think the second commercial is very effective and reveals an insight into Bob's character, something Deeds hasn't shown in this race yet. Hopefully we'll start seeing some more issue oriented ads like McDonnell's good jobs and energy ads. But I doubt we get anything but more angry women bashing the Republican from the Deeds camp.

I've been saying for weeks now that the nonstop attack ads from Deeds is turning off many independents like myself. Remember in elementary when some kid's favorite word is "you suck, you suck" but he didn't know how to respond when you ask him what makes you so good? Well, that's Deeds.
