Obama push for Deeds continues

Rosalind Helderman

Ever receive a letter from the president of the United States? About 330,000 Virginians are about to get one, as the Democratic Party of Virginia puts a letter in the snail mail from President Obama to voters identified as part of the "surge" who came out to the polls to elect Obama last year and are now seen as critical to closing the gap between Democrat Creigh Deeds and Republican Bob McDonnell.

The letterhead includes a nifty presidential symbol with the words, "A special message from President Barack Obama." In the letter, Obama writes, "To make real changes in this country, it will take more than just my presidency - it requires your continued vigilance in the cause of progress. To move this country forward, I need the support and partnership of good governors who are ready to help lay the foundations of change. And this November 3rd is your opportunity to help Virginia do just that."

You can read the whole letter here.

The party says this letter will be its last mailer to Virginia voters on Deeds' behalf.

Horrible letter. Not one reason why YOU should vote for Deeds. Not one position on ONE issue. Just platitudes and pie in the sky wishy washy words. This just ads to Deeds ho hum campaign. Voters want specific ideas and positive ads not negative attack ads which Deeds ran for 90% of his campaign.

This D-Bag Obama is running around playing politics while our Troops suffer their deadliest month in the Afghanistan war. This guy is a despicable human being. I'm embarrassed that he's your president..(I refuse to claim him)

Presumably the Deeds campaign can now save the cost of postage since the Post is distributing the letter free of charge for the campaign.

Seriously, I think it would be fascinating to conduct a poll of a sample of these 330,000 “surge voters” to try to find out how effective this letter is in persuading them to vote for Creigh Deeds.

Two questions for which I’d really love to know the answers are:
1. What is your education level?
a. Not a high school graduate
b. High school graduate
c. Bachelor degree
d. Masters degree
e. PhD

2. Why will you vote for Creigh Deeds?
a. Because The President sent me a letter and told me to vote for Deeds
b. Because he’s the better candidate
c. I don’t know

Not so seriously, here are some other sample questions I would ask:

3. Have you ever heard of Creigh Deeds before receiving this letter?
a. Yes
b. Who?

4. Who is your favorite Marx brother?
a. Groucho
b. Harpo
c. Chico
d. Karl

My vote on November 6th is for Creigh Deeds. I want to see Virginia continue to move forward. I'm glad to see Obama campaigning for Deeds.

It may be too little, too late for this election. National Republicans are throwing tons of money into this race, and are outspending the Democrats 4-1. Deeds is not a polished speaker ,and he stutters. It doesn't change the fact that Democrats have managed the State very well for the last 10 years, and that Bob McDonald will fulfill his promise not to raise any money for the State. It looks like a return to the Gilmore years, when the State almost went bankrupt. Maybe Virginians will learn this time around not to fall for the empty and failed policies of the right in Virginia.

Dirty Deeds actually got a negative bounce from the Obama visit. Ya gotta love it..

If Dems managed the state so well - why do most Va in NOVA sit in traffic for 90 minutes on average EVERY day? Why have taxes fees tolls surcharges and spending gone up at 3 times the inflation rate? Why did Kaine veto bills to expand the death penalty? The Dems use the GOP scare tactic of moving "us" backward. They said the same about Ronald Regan and he or Bush I or Bush II never touched abortion rights - so give it a rest. With the morales of teens and young parents these days we would be better off with a 50 or 60 morales mindset.
