Wagner Rips Bolling's Attendance in Second TV Ad

Sandhya Somashekhar

Jody Wagner, the Democratic challenger running for lieutenant governor, unveiled her second television ad of the fall this morning and it's a negative one.

The 30-second spot called "Work," which is airing in Richmond, Charlottesville and Norfolk and on cable in Northern Virginia, follows a line of attack Wagner has been pursuing about Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling's (R) attendance record on the boards and commissions to which he has been appointed. It also points out Bolling's second job in the private sector as an insurance industry executive, and concludes: "Virginia has full-time challenges. We can't afford a lieutenant governor like Bill Bolling, who's never there."

Full script after the jump.

Voiceover: "If you never showed up for work, would you get paid? In four years as lieutenant governor, Bill Bolling has shown up for state board and commission meetings only 6 percent of the time. Six percent. The taxpayers still pay Bill Bolling's salary while he also gets paid as a health insurance executive. Virginia has full-time challenges. We can't afford a lieutenant governor like Bill Bolling, who's never there."

Bill Bolling has been an outstanding Lieutenant Governor. He has stood with courage to defend his convictions throughout his career in elected office.

Jody Wagner on the other hand is a dishonest hack, at worst, and, at best, is an incompetent Tim Kaine flunky. She and Governor Kaine have managed our budget into fiscal collapse, and they've stood clapping and encouraging Obama as he has pushed America full speed into oblivion.

Yeah, let's make her lieutenant governor. Good idea.

Am I the only one who notices Wagner isn't offering any sort of solutions to Virginia's problems? All she can do is criticize Bolling for sending one of his staff members to meetings because he can't make it. Even though Wagner's record of personally attending those meetings is less than stellar. Virginia needs more than finger pointing and name calling - we need solutions. Wagner isn't up to the challenge. Bill Bolling has a true record of leadership.

Jody Wagner has a record of strong fiscal management and bipartisanship. Bill Bolling has been a do-nothing Lieutenant Governor and failed to work with Governor Kaine promote job creation in the state. He has been nothing but a lapdog for Bush's failed economic policies that almost led to the collapse of our economy. Whether its Bush, Bolling, McDonnell, or Gilmore, Republicans should not be trusted to manage our state or promote economic development. Under Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, we have been the best-managed state in the nation and the best state to do business in. Jody Wagner had a lot to do with these accomplishments as she helped Mark Warner turn around the state budget under Gilmore--we had a late budget that had been gutted and ravaged by the billion-dollar busting "No Car Tax" disaster (which both Bolling and McDonnell strongly supported by the way).

Bill Bolling has a record of economic failure and complete mediocrity. He was also involved in a messy corruption scandal with the Reciprocal Group--where he was a VP and some members were jailed for fraud. He doesn't want you to know about his involvement with that company. I can't think of one thing that he's done since getting elected other than add cash to his campaign coffers. Jody Wagner will bring back integrity to the office and actually try to accomplish things for all Virginians--unlike Bolling who will just try to sit pretty while waiting to run for governor in 2013.

This again? Really? Is Bolling’s attendance record really going to be the attack Wagner pins her hopes on?

OK, first, let’s think about the merit of this attack. As stated in the Virginia Constitution, Bolling primary duty is to preside over the state Senate, which he has done 182 of 182 times. That’s a 100% attendance record. The meetings Wagner is talking about, Bolling attended the meeting if it required his personal attendance. The other meetings he “missed” were attended by a member of his staff. This is EXACTLY what previous LG’s have done. And why is she talking about GACRE? Bolling isn’t even on that panel!

The real issue here is Jody Wagner’s dishonest manipulation of the truth. From day one of this campaign, she has been distorting the facts and has recently resorted to outright lies. She missed her budget projections EVERY YEAR, costing Virginia billions, and then tried to shift the blame. Wagner even quit her post as Secretary of Finance, after missing her budget projection by $7 billion, and now she has the gall to attack Bolling for missing meetings of a board he is not on. It really is unbelievable.

It’s so obvious that since she is behind so far in the polls, she’s just slinging mud to see what will stick. We can’t let her get away with this. Washington Post, please report this accurately. If we can’t trust Jody Wagner to tell the truth in a campaign, how can we trust her with the Lieutenant Governorship

Wagner's latest commercials are simply desperate attacks from a desperate campaign. Nothing more.

I am shocked to see the attacks in these campaigns. Bill Bolling has been a great LG and certainly deserves re-election. These attacks are disingenuous and dishonest. Seems to me like Wagner is grasping at straws.

These manipulations of fact and out right falsehoods are just appalling. Boling presided over the State Senate 182 out of 182 times. And Wagner? She quit her job to run for LG when the people of Virginia needed her the most, a 0% attendance record if you ask me. 100% v. 0%? That's a no brainer.

Wagner is just plain wrong on the facts and just plain wrong for the people of Virginia.

If you all are so concerned about someone stepping down from their job, why are most of you voting for Bob McDonnell who quit his position after 3 years as Attorney General so he could run for the next office. We elected an Attorney General for 4 years, not 3. Wagner was not elected--she had a gubernatorial appointment by Warner and a re-appointment by Kaine.
