Jim Moran Calls GOP the "Taliban Ticket"

Amy Gardner

Always good copy, U.S. Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.) likened the Republican ticket in Virginia this year to Afghanistan's radical Taliban movement in comments broadcast Sunday by WAMU radio.

At a get-out-the-vote rally in Fairfax County, Moran said: "I mean, if the Republicans were running in Afghanistan, they'd be running on the Taliban ticket as far as I can see."

Moran was talking about Republicans Robert F. McDonnell for governor, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and state Sen. Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, who is running for attorney general. By some accounts, the three represent the most conservative Republican ticket to run in Virginia in many years. Moran's comments clearly were aimed to motivate Democratic voters to turn out on Tuesday and vote blue.

According to WAMU, McDonnell spokeswoman Crystal Cameron called Moran's remarks "negative" and "vicious." She also said Moran was seeking to rally voters who are unexcited by their own candidates, Democrats R. Creigh Deeds for governor, Jody Wagner for lieutenant governor and Stephen C. Shannon for attorney general.

"Creigh has had a very difficult time rallying his base," Cameron said, "and they're trying to do anything they can to get out the vote on their side."

This is not the first time McDonnell has been compared to the Taliban; in 2003, a liberal columnist for the Daily Press of Newport News dubbed him "Taliban Bob" for his role in ousting a female Circuit Court judge who had been accused by another woman of sexual harassment.

Moran = Idiot. How Virginia's 8th district keeps electing this guy after the stuff that spews from his mouth is beyond comprehension.

Obviously he's not just a "Moran" in name. ;-)

This is the straw that breaks the Moron back - time to toss this hater out. He has made a number of religious and ethnic attacks in last few years. What a scumbag.

It should be noted that the lefty Democrat Blogs have been calling McDonnell "Taliban Bob" for years...so this kinid of insult is nothing new, for either Moran in particular or the Democrats in general...

Sticks and stones... McDonnell is clearly the more focused, thoughtful, and experienced candidate, despite what the Washington Post, Jim Moron, and Pres. Obama think. Virginia is for lovers -- of red!

Jim Moran speaks the truth about the entire Republican ticket. He may not be "PC", but he is correct, and I am honored that he is my representative.
He works hard, knows the issues, is well-spoken, and honest. You can't say that for anyone on this right-wing ultra-conservative ticket.

Posted by: Restonlady | November 2, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Moran is an embarrassment to those of us in his district who have the ability to think and are not anti-semitic. It's breathtaking to me that such folks are apparently a minority in Alexandria and Reston.

Posted by: mbcnewspaper | November 2, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Vicious? Maybe. But very, very true.

Our Commonwealth needs strong language to expose the underlying character of these wackjobs in moderate clothing.

These Republican clowns want to take us back to the covered wagon days where we ford streams, crawl through the mud and pee in the woods for interstate transportation.

How can their plans for cutting all education, health care and environmental protection turn Virginia into a place to grow the economy and create jobs? There cuts are every bit as anti-progress and anti-social as the Taliban.

Call it like you see it.

Posted by: thuff7 | November 2, 2009 3:05 PM | Report abuse

This IS the most extreme right-wing Republican ticket to run in Virginia in many years. It is an apt comparison which strikes a nerve because it is so true and entirely contrary to what the party is trying to sell Virginia voters.

Posted by: toro426 | November 2, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Congressman Moran is absolutely right. The Republican ticket in Virginia is anti-women in so far as they want to rule women's lives, esp. regarding reproductive health and sex education. The Republican ticket, based on the members of the ticket's past record, doesn't even give women the opportunity to have a say. So, in this respect, Jim Moran is absolutely right. In fact, in my view, any woman and her man who vote for the Republican ticket, show they are non-thinkers and are willing to have others do their thinking for them. The other reason, of course, to vote for the Democratic ticket is that it is the ticket of thr political party that has gotten Virginia "the best place in America to do business" awards--under Gov. Kaine and Gov. Warner. But, conservative Republicans wouldn't want to think about that, either.

How on earth can you call someone "thoughtful" when their entire policy can be explained on a series of bumper stickers:

College Bad
Tax Bad
Progress Bad
Schools Bad
Sick People Bad
Immigrants Bad
Women Bad
Pollution Good
Guns Good

Wouldn't it be great if Democrats were as good at actually fighting a war as they are at declaring one?
What would that look like, I wonder. Maybe I need to go read more about SEIU and WFP in NJ stealing elections. Those are the only examples I can seem to find.

Posted by: recon1 | November 2, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

"This will be my most pleasurable vote since George Bush" just about says it all. Bush was an embarrassment, but it's OK because he was against abortion. That's what it's all about, isn't it? Look at Bob's record, not what he tells you, and you'll see what he cares about. Look at some of the remarks Cucchinelle has made regarding homosexuality, and you see the same pattern. They want laws so that everyone is forced to believe exactly the same things they do, and they leave no room for diversity. THAT is scary.

Whether the "Taliban" label is correct or not, the positions of the Republican ticket seem to be preferable to the voters of Virginia, than the positions of the Democrat ticket.

Quite an interesting -- and significant -- change from last year's results.

the GOP spokesperson described the Moran comments as negative and vicious.... rather, the most proper word would be
"ignorant...." since Moran obviously has no understanding of the Taliban record: such as the religious police beating persons on the street;forced use of burqas; public hangings and amputations in stadiums for various offenses, etc...
but am not familiar with Moran's supposed anti-semitic comments if some one could give more info on that.... but for now, Moran is just an ignorant suss....

Despite living in the 8th district, Moran is a complete idiot! The only reason NOVA keeps electing him to office is because he's a Democrat. Until another Democrat challenges him during the primary and wins, Moron will always be re-elected because NOVA is a single party suburb. The first thing people need to keep in mind is that if elected McDonnell can not do a thing about federal laws. The President is a federal government employee. All his decisions are federal and McDonnell has no power over federal laws. The second thing to remember is to listen to McDonnell words-"I will get rid of all the wasteful spending". What does he consider to be wasteful spending - probably Medicare, Medicaid, all social programs and educational programs. And let's not forget the public option for health insurance. A number of state employees can pack there boxes - when your program is cut so goes your job or a contractor will be doing your job.

The burden of all McDonnell's plans depend on the tax increase on the middle and lower class - your taxes will increase while the rich and the businesses see there taxes decrease.

Finally, the Republican party are exclusive - if you are not mean spirited, hate filled racist bullies who feel they are above the law then you can not be a member of the party. Tuesday is going to be dooms day for Virginians-aleast for the next 6 years. Best of luck to you because you are going to need it! Ask Michael Steele -

McDonnell is narrow minded, wants to expand the power of his religious views at the expense of others, has no real record of solving the issues of modern Virginia (despite his attempted election year makeover), appeals to a largely rural and poorly educated base afraid of anyone different than them. . .hmm, why would anyone make comparisons to the Taliban? Today's GOP should look in the mirror!

I've lived in Northern Virginia for 50+ years and although I was attracted here just like many of my fellow citizens by Virginia's historical commitment to fiscal integrity, individual rights, historic values, access to education and jobs, and so on.

Unfortunately many of the same people in NoVA no longer resemble in their voting patterns what might have attracted them here. But perhaps I am mistaken, these people may have really only came for the high paying jobs from the Federal Government and the hanger-ons that feed off of of it.

Northern Virginia no longer has a connection to perhaps one of the more livable states in the US. All due to those who think the Government should take ultimate and final care of their every whim.

These self-centered voters are why people like Jim Moran can continue to get elected, they represent a state minority, but a Northern Virgina majority.

Perhaps they would be happier living in DC or Maryland rather than Virginia?

The simile is a person who moves near an airport and then complains about the noise from operations.

Well, Creigh Deeds sputtered and equivocated about the public option. I did a google search on him and found the clip. I saw them setting up the rally in front of City Hall in Alexandria and it reminded me of how happy I was when Jim Moran threw a rally for Obama right before the election last year. Now I am totally disillusioned and discouraged by Obama, healthcare "reform," Creigh Deeds for governor and the inaction on banking reform to prevent future subprime mortgage crises and more bailouts. I see no qualitative difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. I see no reason to leave my home and go vote for some guy who sputters and equivocates on the public option.

The Democratic politicians are going to wake up and find that so many people like me have not voted for them and it is the politicians' own fault. They tried to bend over backwards to be "biparatisan" as if that would help them pick up votes. I think "bipartisanship" is an excuse to fund Blue Dog Democrats who want money from the DCCC to run for office just so the Democratic leadership can say they have so many seats and it's an excuse for selling out to corporate interests for campaign contributions. The Democrats have been one big disappointment after another and they've been calling their base "liberals,"as in "rein in the liberals," as if that was not their base for almost a year now. Now they've lost their base and by writing this, I want them to know it.

I am appalled that certain leftist nut jobs posting on this story would actually agree with the comments of Jim Moron who is indisputedly corrupt and Ahmadinejad-like in his hatred of Jews.

Should I assume from Jim Moron's past statements that ALL DEMOCRATS in Virginia who support him ALSO HATE JEWS? If so, that is pretty scary stuff.

With respect to the Taliban comparison, how many of you little lefty weasels have actually been to Afghanistan and faced these monsters who think it is fun to throw acid in the faces of young girls who are trying to attend school? Or think it is ok to rape and kill civilians who support our mission there? Have you people lost your minds?

Based on my recollection of the last few years, it was the DEMOCRAT party who wanted to surrender and end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, close Gitmo and release these terrorist monsters, cut defense spending, and make nice with the likes of Iran and North Korea. Also, not so long ago when President Bush was in office, many DEMOCRATS, including Jim Moron were cheering for our nation's defeat to suit their own political agenda. My how things change when your Messiah is now running (or should I say trying to sink) the ship.

I think you lefties need to look to your DEAR LEADER for advice on how to act after an election - I seem to recall a meeting in the White House last year when your Messiah said something like, "I won" and you lost. I think those words and that attitude are coming home to roost today. My advice for you losers is to get used to it. Your brief time in the sun has already passed and your arrogance and overreaching have done nothing but energize the conservative movement in VA.

I hope you enjoy watching the election returns this evening.

Pretty sad state of affairs when you have to rely on ad hominen attacks vs. addressing issues. That really is the only thing Democrats have - attacks vs. policy. When someone points out a problem with a policy, they attack. When someone is ahead in the polls - they attack. Pretty desperate. Very pathetic.

Taliban? That's very troubling. Our country, the United States of America, is currently sending its soldiers, sailors, and airmen to fight the Taliban (and potentially give their lives). Whether a person agrees with the war or not, it's impermissible to accept the comparison of either party's candidates to a group that conducts summary executions, cuts off the heads of prisoners, and bans education to women.

Were candidates who opposed Roosevelt in 1944 the "Hitler Ticket?" No!

The problem with Moran is that he's a Democrat, and Democrats seem to believe that their leaders cannot possibly be either racists or unreasonable with their comments. Moran is both. His anti-semetic remarks (repeatedly) would inflame the national press if he were a Republican. His new comment should show he has little care for comparing the next governor to a sworn enemy of all Americans.

The 8th District is not one Republicans will win anytime soon. At least Democrats could try not to elect a racist and anti-semetic candidate. Pick any other reasonable liberal and that'd be fine.

So much for good will. But when your district is made up largely of old hippies and big-government apparatchiks, it's not hard to understand how he keeps getting re-elected.

I'm also interested to know where the media is on this one. When George Allen made his "macacca" statement it was on the news and in the papers for weeks. Does anyone recall the brutality of the Taliban, chopping off limbs and such? Does anyone really think that is what the GOP represents? Why isn't the media shouting this from the mountaintop? Democrat Jim Moran has no room to talk.

On September 21, 2009 he told a group hosted by the Dar al Hijrah Islamic Center, (Yes the same Mosque where the 9/11 pilots and the Fort Hood Terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan worshipped), and Imam Johari Abdul-Malik the following;

"We really are part of a human organism, of really one organism, hence the organization that is represented here, ONE…A majority of the humans on this earth really don’t have a whole lot of opportunity to realize their full potential, so we as a human species will never realize our full potential…when we ignore so much of that body of which we are a part.” (see http://tinyurl.com/ygt25t2)

At the end of his speech, Democrat Jim Moran reminded the audience, “That’s really what this night is all about. It’s recognizing that we’re all one.”

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik supports, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin who murdered sheriff deputy Ricky Leon Kinchen and wounding another in '02. Also said he had never heard of al Qaeda recruiting in his community. And supports Imam Shaker Elsayed who supports many convicted terrorists.
