McDonnell's advisers

Anita Kumar

A couple hundred Virginians are serving on 13 committees that are advising Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell on everything from economic development and transportation to education and government reform.

There are plenty of familiar names on the lists. Current and former state legislators, former members of Congress Tom Davis, Thelma Drake and Virgil Goode, one wanna-be member of Congress Robert Hurt, banker (and wife of Rep. Eric Cantor) Diana Cantor, former lieutenant governor John Hager and many Republican activists from across the state, including Frank Atkinson. McDonnell's high school classmate, Dominion leader Tom Farrell, and his eldest daughter, Jeanine, are also serving as are Ben Marchi, head of the state chapter of Americans for Prosperity, Victoria Cobb of the Family Foundation and Tim Robertson, the televangelist's son.

Democrats can be found, but aren't that plentiful. They include BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, former Warner and Kaine chief of staff Bill Leighty, former legislator turned lobbyist Whitt Clement, and Phil Shucet, VDOT commissioner under Mark Warner.

A day after we received a copy of the working groups, we were told that McDonnell had added more than a few Democratic delegates to the working groups. He also will be adding some Democratic senators after his staff consults with the Democratic majority leader Richard Saslaw.

In the meantime, take a look at the full list below and tell us what you think of the men and women McDonnell selected. Do you know these people? What do you think of their inclusion?

I see that Waste Management gets to be part of the Natural Resources team - that's great for our environment.

And Tim Hugo and Jay O'Brien on the Government Reform panel will most likely leave us with no state government when they are done.

I wonder why Virgil Goode is on the transportation panel? It isn't like it was a specialty while he was in Congress.

Regardless though, not a lot of Democratic names that aren't Delegates in there. You can't call that bi-partisan.

May Fox was not Secretary of Health and Human Resources in Jerry Baliles' administration - that was Eva Teig Hardy.

Wow. That list is not the least bit regionally diverse. I noticed a couple of folks from Roanoke and only two from far Southwest Virginia. I guess they'll be left out; as usual. Who knows, maybe the cabinet will get representation from west of Roanoke.

Also Ben Marchi? I heard he was fired from The Republican Party of Virginia and/or Thelma Drake's campaign back in 2006. That was the word in VA Beach anyway.

Thanks for sharing this, Anita. I was surprised to see my name on the list, since nobody from the Gov.-elect's office has contacted me about this. I wonder how many other people listed learned it first from the Washington Post?

Delegate David Englin

I am very concerned that Victoria Cobb is on the Health and Human Resources board. I thought he was going to run his Administration like his campaign, center-right not far-right.
