On Cinco de Mayo, Hispanic activist to urge McDonnell to act on immigration

Anita Kumar

Gov. Bob McDonnell will honor Mexican heritage as part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration this afternoon in the garden outside the governor's mansion.

At least one of the 70 Hispanic business leaders and supporters -- longtime activist Daniel Cortez of Stafford County -- said he will use his time with McDonnell to encourage the governor to act on the state's illegal immigration problem.

Cortez said that he has been frustrated that the federal government has failed to pass a bill, and he believes that McDonnell could shame President Obama and Congress into action. He suggests McDonnell develop a Virginia version of the "Bracero" program, which put millions of Hispanics -- many Mexican -- to work after World War II while allowing them to return to their home countries regularly.

"A state-sponsored Bracero program would force the federal government to do its job and secure Virginia's borders and stop both sides of the isle waffling on the issue,'' Cortez said. "All of us who the governor invited for Cinco de Mayo again should be proud of his efforts for Virginia and we have an opportunity to lead and we want him to lead us and the nation who has failed us."

Cotez said he wants McDonnell to study the issue, perhaps through a commission, and devlop a program that would allow illegal immigrants to be tracked but also find jobs.

McDonnell has been critical of the federal government for failing to do more on the issue, and just last week had some choice words about Arizona's new immigration law.

"This is a day to be proud of a heritage and their contributions in Virginia but not proud for a lack of focus in doing what is right on both sides...American and Hispanic," Cortez said. "To do nothing is not the answer."

It isn't Obama who hasn't "done" anything. It was the Republican Congress under Bush and now it is the Republicans in Congress who promise to filibuster any Dem Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill currently in Congress. Democrats want CIR -- talk to GOP Senator, Lindsey Graham if you want it moved forward.

And, if anyone thinks that a VA Republican is going to support a state "Bracero" program, I have a nice bridge in Arlington to sell them!

"Cortez said he wants McDonnell to study the issue, perhaps through a commission, and devlop a program that would allow illegal immigrants to be tracked but also find jobs."

HELLO!! Mr. Cortez - anyone home? These people are here ILLEGALLY. What part is ambiguous? Yes, they need to be tracked - AND DEPORTED. The people who need to find jobs are those in the unemployment and welfare lines - not the ICE line.

I have absolutely no issue with LEGAL immigrants. My mother came from Germany in the 60s. She learned English, became employed & gained her citizenship.

Illegals, however, are a very different story. Illegal immigrants (no matter their country of origin) need a one-way ticket back to [wherever].

Where is Crazy Cucchinelli when you need him?? I bet if VA wanted to deport gays, he'd be all over it!

the 70 Hispanic business leaders will also have their immigration status checked upon entry into the governors mansion garden, and any found to be illegal will be forced to help cater the event and mow the lawn.
Governor McDonell wishes to stress to all Virginians that this party will be hosted in the mansions GARDENS and none of the dirty mexicans will be allowed inside.

The Hispanics to Mcdonnell: Arriba! Arriba! If you don't give illegal immigrants an amnesty, we'll cut you holmes.

McDonnell to Hispanics: (Rebel yell), okay, us Republicans need your votes.

Cortez seems to think ILLEGAL immigration is okay, and that the U.S. doesn't have the right to control that. Tell him to talk to the GOP in Congress.

This isn't a Democrat/Republican issue, we're all American citizens first. Amnesty isn't going to happen!

Spin the issues all you want, project YOUR race based issues onto your opposition, offend the Jewish population by comparing people coming here illegally to the genocide they faced, riot in the streets, and scream insults at the American population; at the end of the day it won't change anything!

At best you can hope Americans don't run pro-criminal voters (probably "progressive") right out of our electorate. This isn't a party issue, don't let Democrats trick you into thinking it is, they don't even have enough support in their own party, and the LGBT crowd has abandoned THEIR idea of "Illegal Immigration Reform" We don't reward criminals and nobody is gonna get Amnesty for breaking the law. NOBODY! The "path to citizenship" and "humane enforcement" lines are crap too, criminals that have been emboldened to cheat our system for years don't get "fast-tracked" to citizenship. The people trying to come here legally certainly aren't going to like being "line jumped" by people breaking the laws they so patiently observed. We aren't the monsters for enforcing our laws, they are the monsters for coming here illegally and in some cases pro-creating and making families that now carry their burden, THEY ARE THE MONSTERS! If I sneak into a concert at the Gorge, when I'm caught I don't get taken to the front of the entry line, and the amount of time I've been inside the event has nothing to do with my removal, unlawful entry is unlawful entry!

Amnesty isn't going to happen! Sorry if you don't like it, but too bad, build a bridge, get over it, and start immigrating here legally like all the other generations of Americans.

Obama's lack of leadership is the problem. He has done almost nothing to fulfill his promise to enact immigration reform.
Obama should be informed that if immigration reform is not passed before the midterm elections, many Hispanics will boicott the Dems in Nov and Obama can say goodbye to re-election.

Very, very, impressive! Accolades to “yourmomscalling;” just brilliant. After I stopped laughing, I thought about it and then cried. Everyone should copy this and spread it everywhere. Great work.

@ yourmomscalling:

Since you are so worked up on this that you have to shout, might I recommend that you move to North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, or one of the others you hold up as a shining example. The options under the U.S. border category sound a lot better to me.

Illegals are here in the USA illegally.

They should/must be deported back to mexico - the sooner the better.

we must have politicos who don't sellout real Americans - pandering to these illegal hispanics.

I have no problem with hispanics here in the USA legally. I do have a problem with illegals.

Our politicians are selling us out - need to get representitives who stand up and demand that illegals be shipped back tomexico

One day they have their LULAC and ACLU lawyers jumping the folks in Arizona and the Governor claiming she has overstepped her power and that immigration is the sole responsibility of the Federal Government.
The next day they are in the Governor of Maryland's office demanding he take action.
Pick a argument and stick with it folks.
I know it is difficult when all the facts are against you but try.
You can always pull out the old racists name calling.

"A state-sponsored Bracero program would force the federal government to do its job and secure Virginia's borders and stop both sides of the isle waffling on the issue" David Cortez said.

If the federal government was doing its job the illegal immigrants would be deported. What Mr Cortez wants is the federal government to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. I didn't know Virginia's borders were as insecure like Arizona's.

What does this cinco de mayo have to do with America and Americans, and why should we care about it.

What an idiot: Cortez made a distinction between Americans and Hispanics. Thus, once could conclude there is definitely a difference in his mind since he did not differentiate between legal and illegal. We would want to grant legal status to millions more Hispanics who think like that because...?
