15 illegal immigrant sex offenders arrested in Va., D.C.

Rosalind Helderman

Federal immigration officials announced Friday that over the past five days, they have arrested and initiated deportation proceedings against 15 illegal immigrants who had been convicted of sex crimes and were living in Virginia and the District.

They also identified 356 more foreign nationals currently incarcerated in federal, state or local correctional facilities who will also be deported at the conclusion of their criminal sentences, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton announced at a Richmond news conference.

He was joined by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and Attorney Gen. Ken Cuccinelli (R), who praised the operation as an example of effective state and federal coordination on illegal immigration.

Officials said federal regulations barred them from releasing the names of those arrested. However, they said they came from seven countries. Thirteen had been living in Virginia and two in the District.

They included a 40-year Salvadoran who had been convicted of two counts of sexual battery of a minor and was arrested in Henrico. Also arrested was a 31-year-old Salvadoran arrested in Reston who had failed to register as a sex offender, as required by law. The man had been convicted of having carnal knowledge of a child who was between 13 and 15 years old.

"Sex offenders are simply a scourge, and they deserve our full law enforcement attention," Morton said.

See a map of the Virginia arrests here.

McDonnell and Cuccinelli acknowledged that they have been generally critical of the Obama administration's immigration policies. But they praised ICE for stepped-up efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants convicted of other crimes.

"On what they've done in the last year, they've been outstanding," said McDonnell, noting that the Obama administration has this year initiated deportation proceedings against more illegal immigrants than in any previous year. "These partnerships ... have been terrific."

McDonnell said the fact that the program only identified 15 such individuals who had been released out of correctional facilities back into their communities suggested that the state and federal governments are doing a better job of finding illegal immigrants in jails and prisons.

In August, McDonnell formally requested federal approval to give Virginia state troopers broader powers to enforce immigration law. Twenty-six states and eight Virginia localities have so-called 287g agreements that deputize local law enforcement officers to act as ICE agents, but the Obama administration has declined to issue the authority in some areas.

Morton confirmed Friday that McDonnell's request has been received but provided no new information about whether it might be granted.

"We have it. We received it, and it's being reviewed. Beyond that, I don't have anything to add," he said.

Morton also said that a recent vote by the Arlington County Board of Supervisors to opt out of a program that uses fingerprints collected by local law enforcement agents to help identify illegal immigrants would have no impact on the program in Virginia.

"Our agreement is with the state," Morton said. "It is a federal enforcement effort. No one in the department of corrections, no one in Arlington County, no one in the other jurisdictions of Virginia is being asked to enforce immigration law. Federal immigration officers -- ICE officers -- are enforcing the law."

He also defended the Secure Communities program as one "transforming the face of immigration enforcement" and one that rightly focuses energy on finding illegal immigrants who have committed other crimes.

Cuccinelli added that the coordination between local officials who make arrests and federal officials charged with enforcing immigration laws "truly has been seamless. ... I cannot overemphasize just in the first few months how well the Secure Communities has worked."

Does Maryland's refusal to participate in these sorts of initiatives encourage "undocumented" sexual predators and other criminal aliens to flee to Maryland?

The US should be more aggressive about illegals. Stop going for the cheap labor and start dealing with the security of this country.

There are too many illegals in this country who are sucking us dry with the welfare and health care services. It's one of the prime reasons that we are going bankrupt.

Good start,don't let up!!

I guess even DC appreciates federal help rounding up sex offenders at large; a shame that Maryland, under Governor O'Malley, apparently doesn't care to participate.

Would be nice if the Post would report that.

Will someone please explain to me why sex is a crime? Sex is great. I fully endorse all forms, whether free or associated with some cost.

There are thousands of illegal aliens living in Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and the Council of the District of Columbia along with nappy head Holmes-Norton have put out a welcoming mat to illegals from El Salvador/Central America and elsewhere. We are doomed U.S. citizens.

I wonder if those jusridictions that don't want ICE to enforce the immigration laws think that sex offenders who are illegal immigrants should be protected?

Posted by: Jimof1913 | October 8, 2010 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Why is Maryland not working with the feds to remove dangerous illegal aliens off our streets?

O'Malley and Ike Leggett should be ashamed of themselves for turning a blind eye to to this growing problem.

How many more people have to be raped and murdered in Maryland by people who should not be here in the first place?

Poverty and crime take the path of least resistance. Virginia has said no more. So guess where the bad guys are going to call home?

Hello Montgomery County, Maryland!

Disgusting.

Wait a minute--they call some guy who slashed the tires of a hispanic a "HATE CRIMINAL" but the Washington Post makes LESS OF SEX OFFENDERS THAN A TIRE SLASHER???

Seems to me Washington Post aids and abets REAL criminals.

Now what do we do about the citizen sex offenders. Oh that's right, we live next door to them.

Wherever you go, wherever you're from, folks is folks!

But I was told that all illegals were just good people coming to America to make an honest living.

Good start.

Now arrest the rest of them. Start with Obama's Auntie.

Those are the problems we all face when our Country refuses to expel all illegals! Who can tell which are the rapist or the good folks! So, we must treat them all like Criminals because illegal means just that! From Obama, to both Houses and Homeland Security and the Justice Department its time you get your act together and send these folks back ASAP!

This is a step in a positive direction however, what about the ILEGALL immigrants that either haven't committed another crime other than being in this country illegally and the illegal immigrant that hasn't been caught or convicted of other crimes? We really need to get back on target with the illegal immigration detection and deportation process. Remember, being here illegally doesn't automatically give the immigrant civil or constitutional rights. As for human rights... if they were concerned about humanity, they would not have come into this country ILLEGALLY to soak up our resources.

Illegals are not harmless, hence the name "illegal". They broke our laws when they crossed the border without permission.
Does it surprise you that they continue to commit crimes once they are here? Who knows how many or what type of people are coming across the border they are undocumented ID.
Whoever supports them by allowing them to be here is aiding and abetting a criminal and may be allowing murderers, rapist, drug dealers and thieves into our country. This is why we have immigration laws it is to prevent exactly what is happening now.
I know many immigrants that came here legally and have had to go through all the INS hoops. This is unfair to the educated and law abiding immigrants that have had to wait in line to come to the US.
There has been so much crime in the Southern US in past years due to the illegals who have come here and committed crimes to stay in the US . Are we saying this is OK now?
When the crime hits home and they murder your neighbor, rape your daughter or rob you will get the message loud and clear.
They keep coming because it is easy to get in illegally and stay.
They know their chances of remaining here are good once they are in. People hire them illegally ,provide shelter and further encourage this behavior.
If there were tougher borders and laws really being enforced for all immigrants then we would not have this problem.
The dam has broken......good luck containing it.

Buyers beware !!
There is a case in LA where a man and his wife were murdered in their home by illegals hired to do work on their home by a contractor using cheap labor.
Obviously the contractor did not know the men he hired nor did he know that they would murder and rob the couple that contracted him to do work on their house. He picked them up on the side of the road and paid them cash and had no Identification whatsoever on the men, this is the usual.
This couple was well known in their LA community and had a restaurant that was well liked in the area.
The wife walked in on the men robbing her home so they killed her. When she did not return to the restaurant and the husband could not reach her, he went home and was killed also.
Let this be a lesson to contractors to know whom they are hiring because if your worker/s commit a crime under your watch your name is mud. You may also be charged with a criminal offense.
Let it be a lesson to those hiring a contractor to know what type of workers your contractor is using.

Um, wow. I assume you are trying to be funny. You can't be that dumb. Sex crimes are rape, sex with a minor, indecent exposure, etc.

You people are forgetting basic logic. Sex offenders are different from most people. Progressives believe that people who think and act differently add to diversity. It's a tenet of progressive thinking that if you add diversity, you must be good for the community. Therefore, it makes total sense to me that MD and MoCo would NOT try to arrest these people. Oh, also they're Latino and illegal. I didn't think I needed to mention that part.

Teh WaPo, via Hilderman, opined:

Federal immigration officials announced Friday that over the past five days, they have arrested and initiated deportation proceedings against 15 illegal immigrants who had been convicted of sex crimes and were living in Virginia and the District.

+++ +++ +++ +++

Notice that there have been, and shall be, no actions against Criminal Sex Predator Aliens in the State of Maryland.

Maryland aggressively protects ILLEGAL ALIENS regardless of the crimes they commit.

In 2008, all (but one) murders of citizens in Montgomery County were committed by ILLEGAL ALIENS who had previously been in custody of the MoCo police. At the same time, in nearby Prince George's County and in the District, CRIMINAL ALIENS were so emboldened by Maryland's despicable coddling of PREDATOR ALIENS as to decapitate a family or two and to travel to nearby counties to torture old women to death.

Maryland politics are so distorted by the indebtedness of elected officials to CRIMINAL GANGSTER LAWYER FRONTS so as to throw the citizens to the wolves.

There is no possible hope for the (admittedly very rare) Decent Marylander other than to OUST ALL INCUMBENTS.

I will give you one exception to that rule: Ben Kramer in Maryland's 19th District, who sponsored the excellent Maryland Anti-Gang Act of 2010. He should be returned to office.

I don't much care for any of the Republican alternatives to the present victors of the Democrat primaries in Montgomery, but in almost all cases they are capable of rising to competence, and there's no more important issue right now than destroying the incumbents, or at least getting them out of office.

A vote for almost any Maryland incumbent is a vote FOR THE CRIMINAL INVASION.

Again: note that the Feds don't even try to oust the criminal aliens from Maryland. That's because MARYLAND POLITICIANS LOVE THEIR SEX FREAK ILLEGAL ALIEN SEX CRIMINALS.

This takes "pandering" to a new level...

:::ICE/BORDER_PATROL/IMMIGRATION and CREW:::
.
---These officers are bureaucratically acting upon the limitations and restraints by government policies.
.
- The real question is: When is this all going to SPEED-UP and so we get rid of this butt dragging legal process is a economic waste of tax payers dollars.
.
---My proposal is to create nation-wide chain gang work camps run by private security forces and or military with defense contractors and treat these offenders as prisoners of war if they are cartel, gang, mafia, and illegal status related are felony convicted from their own country and or U.S. Justice Systems.
.
---Speedy 1-week trial Death sentences for all and any foreign nationals who are involved in murder of U/S/Citizens fitting the above criteria of cartel, mafia, and gang related.
.
---"Don't Tread on Me" and "United we Stand" appears to some have faded colors in the ranks of justice.
