Kaine to stay on as Democratic National Committee Chairman
(Cross-posted from the 44 blog.)
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine said Sunday that he plans to stay at the helm of the national party another two years because that's where President Obama wants him to serve.
"My agreement with the president is I was going to do what he wants me to do," Kaine said on CNN's "State of the Union." "And what I know sitting here today is he wants me to continue in this spot and that's what I'm going to do with excitement, you know, traveling all around the country, going through the TSA lines like everybody else, going out and being the president's advocate and promoter. And it's a wonderful job and I intend continue it."
Kaine, the former governor of Virginia, was tapped by Obama in January 2009 to serve as the head of the DNC. Obama campaigned for Kaine's gubernatorial bid in 2005; two years later, Kaine became the first major elected official outside of Illinois to back Obama's White House bid. He also was on Obama's vice presidential shortlist in 2008.
Late last year, Politico reported that senior Democratic officials were floating the possibility of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs succeeding Kaine as DNC chairman, with Kaine potentially in line for a Cabinet job. At the time, the White House pushed back against the speculation and a Kaine aide noted that the chairmanship is a four-year term.
The Republican National Committee is slated to elect its next chairman later this month. Five candidates are vying to unseat chairman Michael Steele; all of the contenders are slated to face off for the first time Monday in a debate at the National Press Club.

Get ready Virginia - Kaine's post at the DNC is simply a placeholder for him to run for Senate in 2012 if Webb doesn't run.

LOL- Politics is really strange- Republicans win and Steele will be out. Democrats lose and Kaine stays in.

That must be good news for the republicans, his tenure has been such a success. There is nothing like marching backwards to energize progressives and the youth vote. Good news too for all the old hacks and money brokers.
Hmmmm? Whatever happened to that DNC Chair who had the winning formula, the one Obama copied his campaign from? Dean, I think it was, Howie Dean or something, jeez been so long since democrats were winners I can't remember anymore.
Oh well, no matter, its good to see somebody have the career they can just marry and pimp for...go Tim!
