Moran: GOP won in 2010 because 'a lot of people' don't want black president

By Ben Pershing

Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.) is once again drawing attention for making controversial comments to the media, after the told the Arab television network Alhurra that the GOP won in November because many Americans don't want a black president.

In the interview, which has been flagged by the Weekly Standard and The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin, Moran said that Democratic losses in the 2010 elections ...

... happened because of the same reason the Civil War happened in the United States. The Civil War happened because the Southern states, particularly the slaveholding states, didn't want to see a president who was opposed to slavery. In this case a lot of people in this country, I believe, don't want to be governed by an African American, particularly one who is inclusive, who is liberal, who wants to spend money on everyone and who wants to reach out to include everyone in our society. That's a basic philosophical clash.

The full interview with Alhurra, which appeared to take place after Tuesday night's State of the Union address, can be viewed here, with the passage in question coming after the 3-minute mark. As Rubin points out in her post, the "slaveholding states" Moran references include his home state of Virginia.

"With nearly 1,000 identified hate groups in the U.S. and recent studies showing a majority of Americans believe racism is still widespread against African Americans, it is no secret that our country has and continues to struggle with racial equality," said Moran spokeswoman Anne Hughes in a statement. "The Congressman was expressing his frustration with this problem and the role it played in the last election."

"Rather than ignore this issue or pretend it isn't there, the Congressman believes we are better off discussing it in order to overcome it," Hughes said. "Rep. Moran believes that despite these pervasive problems, President Obama has the ability to make this a more unified, diverse, and stronger country."

Moran has a long history of sparking controversy with his rhetoric. In 2003, he was forced to apologize for suggesting that the U.S. went to war in Iraq because of "the strong support of the Jewish community" for the invasion. Moran took heat on the same topic in 2007, when he said the American Israel Public Affairs Committee had "pushed" the Iraq war and did not "represent the mainstream of American Jewish thinking." Washington Post writer Colbert King authored a column on the controversy titled, "Jim Moran's Mouth, Again."

In his 2010 reelection race, Moran complained that Republicans frequently nominated candidates "who haven't performed any kind of public service." Moran's GOP opponent in the race was former U.S. Army Col. Patrick Murray, and critics said Moran was suggesting that military service did not count as "public service." Moran later tried to clarify his remarks by saying he was referring to Murray's lack of engagement "in the civic life of the community."

Democratic Rep. Jim Moran is a bomb-throwing dunce. He's an embarrassment and has been for years. Wake up, Arlington and Alexandria! Stop voting for this buffoon.

That is a load of crap, Congressman Moran. I would vote for a black CONSERVATIVE like J.C. Watts in a heartbeat. The problem is that you just don't want to admit that it's really not about race but instead it's all about policies that President Obama and his fellow radical progressives support that are destroying America.

Posted by: honorswar26 | January 27, 2011 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Although Moran doesn't say it well, he has a point. There are a lot of people in this country who do not extend to Obama the same goodwill that has been given to all presidents. Joe Wilson is one example. I can only assume this is on account of the subconscious effects of racism.

I agree with jamesmsalt.

People are so naive to believe that folks don't vote based on race. Probably the same percentage that still believes our President is Muslim or Kenyan, for that matter.

Interesting that the 1rst African American President would inherit a
depression and two wars... from a President not elected who
cleaned out Fort Knox on his way out of office (You know he knew

It makes perfect sense to me. I've been saying this for 2 years: a solid 40% of Americans can't abide the fact that there is a black man in the White House. 60 years ago about 90% of Americans were racist. No one can deny that. Now, 40% of Americans are racist. You could say that's good progress!

Posted by: MarkFlorence | January 27, 2011 2:31 PM | Report abuse

If you read the comments sections of any newspaper in any state, you have to come to the same conclusion.

I live in SC, it is certainly true here. You see the racists on WaPo, too.

Racist = Tea Party = social conservative = religious right = C Streeter. Res. Tim Scott and Allen West are just supreme opportunists, as are their voters.

When it was white boy Geo. W. Bush running the country into the ground with unnecessary war and the economy, the voters that elected the bunch in 2010 didn't have a problem with it.

We need to bring back the draft, take their kids to war and see how engaged for peace they get then.

I get what he's saying. Obviously you can’t apply it to all Republicans; however, there is a lot of unfounded hate towards Obama.

Posted by: doesntmatter | January 27, 2011 2:33 PM | Report abuse

The underlying racism in SOME, but not all, of the opposition to Obama is the elephant in the room. The problem, besides the elephant, is how to address it constructively.

Mr. Moran is NOT sparking controversy, if anything he's telling the "Truth".

What the Right-Wing have tried to keep in the dark for so long, has now come into the light.

Posted by: lcarter0311 | January 27, 2011 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Actually Rep. Moran hit the nail on the head. Having spent the better part of my city planning career dealing with the issues of racial segregation and integration, I feel very confident that the racial bigotry contributed significantly to the Republican's success in November. The Republican Party has built itself on racial bigotry which, in recent years, they have expended to include bigotry toward Hispanics. Otherwise they would be supporting vigorous enforcement of civil rights and fair housing laws. Otherwise they would be seeking to provide those boots whose bootstraps they say minorities must pull to get out of the underclass.

But instead they oppose all efforts that could benefit minorities. They do all they can to contribute to maintaining the permanent underclass. And they continue to use the usual code words to keep scapegoating African Americans and Hispanics -- not unlike what those charming far right wing fellows in brown shirts did in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s.

Sure, the economy is in the tank.

Obama spent $1 trillion on "shovel ready" projects that he later said didn't exist and bought 9.6% unemployment.

This year's deficit is $1.4 trillion.

But Rep. Jim Moron sees the real issue...

Anyone who isn't thrilled with the above stellar performance is a RACIST!!!

What a sleazy, demagogic boob.

Like many Americans, I was happy in 2008 to see that America had progressed to the point where a black could legitimately compete for the top office. However, the fact that Obama, to quote Moran, "is liberal, ... who wants to spend money on everyone" was more than sufficient reason for me to vote for his opponent.

Dumbo Jimbo never intellectually resolved why Americans who didn't want an African-American President in 2010 voted for one in 2008. Thanks, Jimmy. You've just proved that "racism" is the last retort of someone who's lost the argument.

Posted by: hofbrauhausde | January 27, 2011 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Right, because *nobody* voted for Obama just because he was black. Good thing racism is a one-way street, and only Republicans do it. Whew.

Posted by: charlesbakerharris | January 27, 2011 2:53 PM | Report abuse

I suppose Moran hasn't considered the reality that if his comments were true Obama would never have been elected in the first place. Either that or he would have us believe that suddenly millions of previously "color blind" Americans suddenly turned into Klansmen in the past two years. And if so, what caused them to turn? Anger at Obama's policies and the state of the economy? Perhaps. So why not eliminate the ridiculous notion that this is racially motivated and just look at the facts that remain: Obama was elected, he trashed the economy, and now the people wnat him out. That much is true no matter what color he is. Why do the libs continually bring up race while the right leaves it alone?

Posted by: josh27 | January 27, 2011 2:53 PM | Report abuse

He just had the guts to say what everyone knows.

Tea baggers are bigots. The talk of Obama being a "secret muslim" is code word for him being black, and therefore not a "real American". They regularly bring guns and threaten violence because they are no different than the KKK thugs who have terrorized blacks for centuries in this country. And some of these racists even want to reopen the civil war and claim it was not about slavery but about "state's rights"
(code word for slavery).

These racists never change.

Tea party = Republicans = racists & bigots

1. Moran is a racist.

2. The American people must not have noticed the skin color of Obama in 2008? Is that what Moran is implying? He won the Presidency, both the popular vote and the electoral vote convincingly.

3. The Republican victories occurred because so many Americans are seeing the Democrats for the socialists that they are... by generously spending other people's money to keep themselves in power, in creating an expansive and expansive government and by bankrupting our nation with their collective insane incompetence.

I gotta love a politician who tells the truth!

No wonder the People of Virginia voted him into office, if nothing else, they can count on Moran to tell the truth, something that has completely illuded the Republican Party.

Republicans will do anything and everything to avoid the truth, because the truth hurts them and their absurd views.

Now that House Republicans have wasted taxpayer time and money on their Teabagger pandering, going-nowhere "repeal" of Health Care Reform, it's just occurred to them that they were supposed to replace it with something.

So far all they have is Boehner (R-OH) out congratulating himself for "voting to begin replacing" ... and ... well, that's about it.

To be fair, House Republicans have been pretty busy with their efforts to give more unfunded, deficit inflating Tax Cuts to Billionaires, to bring back "Don't Ask, Don't Tell,", to make sure currently banned federal funding for abortion continues to be currently banned, and to read selective parts of the Constitution on C-Span, so they just need a little time -- and they won't be rushed...

And now, two years later, House Republicans still haven't come up with anything but a meaningless show boating repeal vote and some juvenile backslapping.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are still enjoying their own government run, taxpayer funded, gold plated health care plan.

What is evident in Morans comments and the posts from many Democrats is that they are so totally bereft of ideas and good policies that they must go back to their basic strategy, call anyone who doesn't agree with them a racist.

More than 50% of the electorate voted for Obama, a large majority of them white. Obama/Pelosi/Reid then subject the country to two years of the most liberal agenda ever experienced in our lifetimes. Result, the people reject their policies.

What is interesting is that, while the vote changed in huge numbers from Democrat to Republican across almost all demographics, the Black vote remained steady for Obama. Tell me then, who is voting based on policy and who is voting based on the colour of the candidates skin.

The economy is a disaster.

Unemployment is stuck at almost ten percent.

New unemployment claims were up sharply this week.

The housing market is tanking again, as prices have resumed their southward trend.

This year's budget deficit will be the highest ever, taking over first place from last year's highest-ever, and we're headed for more as far as the eye can see.

Social Security is now officially broke (you wonder why that news isn't on the WaPo's home page0.

Our enemies don't fear us.

Our friends don't respect us.

At his SOTU address, Obama claims there isn't a person in the room who would want to be living in another country, as he feverishly tries to make the U.S. just like Europe.

If you're unhappy about all of the above, it's because you're a racist.

This is what the Democrats do. The Republicans want to attack the budget deficit. And the Democrats decide to attack - the Republicans.

Playing the race card is the last refuge of a scoundrel. And in Moran's case, also the first.

THAT is why everybody thinks you must be a racist, because you’re not able to see the truth for exactly what it is.

Some Republicans seem unable to cope with the fact that Republicans are the ones who caused ALL of this trouble in the first place.

People did not vote for Democrats because Democrats did not do a good job over the preceding two years. Deficits soared through the stratosphere, attention was focused on liberal wish lists rather than the economy, Wall Street robber barons were gifted bazillions of taxpayer dollars to bail them out and they also avoided meaningful oversight and regulation, health care reform neglected to fix important problems to protect special interests, Democrats childishly sought retribution for Republican's prior antics by locking them out of the legislative process, etc., etc., etc. It's your record Dems, own it.

Politicians like Moran must be congenitally predisposed to blame every one else for their own unpopularity. Face it, Dems, you blew it...big time. If you don't take the people's message seriously more of you will be tossed out. Unfortunately, the more serious and sincere politicians usually get the boot, because they tend to be in swing districts, while the the idiotic gasbags like Moran are safe.

lindalovejones, you should remove your shoe from your mouth.

Because for years, I've been telling anyone who would listen that Social Security is going broke, and that we need to do something about it before it wrecks our entire economy. If you don't believe me, go through my posting history here back when George W. Bush was president.

And all I got was a bunch of accusations that I was just like all the rest of the Republicans - I wanted to destroy Social Security and Medicare, put your grandma out on the street, and shoot your grandpa.

I backed my claims up with facts and figures, and you all ran off with your fingers in your ears, yelling, "LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALALA." Except for those of you who sat there and accused me of trying to confuse you with fourth grade arithmetic.

And yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office announced that Social Security is now in the red, six years earlier than when last projected. It's just a matter of time before all the water is out of the tub. I was telling you that four years ago, and all I got back was "LALALALALALA..."

So don't tell me I don't care about budget problems. I cared about them when you were denying they even existed.

But you can't wrap your tiny little brain around that. People can't have principled objections to the way Obama and the Democrats are running things. It HAS to be because they're racists and teh eeevil.

What the heck are you talking about? +30 million uninsured blacks? There are only 38 million blacks in the whole country.

According to the Census, there are 38.1 million blacks and 30.8m (81%) of them have insurance.

There are 197m whites (non-hispanic) and 175m (89%) have insurance.

The percentage of blacks vs. white who have medical coverage is close to equal.

Obamacare does not benefit African-Americans at a significantly larger percentage when compared to European-Americans.

I'm not quite sure what the 2010 election has to do with white people's desire not to have a black President. Seems that would be a more relevant issue in 2008. That being said, here's a look at the percentage of white folks who voted for the Democratic candidate in the past four Presidential elections:

2008- 43%
2004- 41%
2000- 42%
1996- 44%

Seems to me the only real assertion you can make based on those figures is that roughly 42.5% of whites will always vote Democrat, and 57% or so will always vote Republican, regardless of the candidate's skin color. Besides, Obama is half black and half white, which would likely make those ugly racist republicans (of course there just aren't any racist democrats out there, like none) all conflicted and stuff. They'd hate him and love him at the same time. In fact, truth be told, they all cast their votes the same way in 2008- 3/4 for the white guy, and 1/4 for the black guy. It says so on most of their write-in ballots.

Did this bigot stop to think all those "racist" people were the same ones who voted for Obama initially? How do they think Obama got elected? I voted for a moderate Democrat or so I thought. My disillusion came with his left agenda and that's what cost him my support. You're also correct he can't do anything right to please me. The trust is gone. I just want him out. Counting the days down to 2012 now.

It was the "evil white people" Moran/moron is now accusing of racism.

Come on, you can't have it both ways.

The fact is, the American people are sick of Obama's failed liberal policies.

Desertdiva1, you're a racist.

Because only a racist would oppose Obama. There can be no other explanation. Just ask lindalovejones, she knows ("there is no other logical explanation").

I don't get many anti Obama emails anymore, but I got several during the campaign and during his first year, showing first lady or the president in cartoons that were definitely racial.

I spammed them and most of them stopped.

Here is a fact: In 1964 President Johnson was elected but had just finished out Kennedy's term. Because of the civil rights issue, the South became red. Before that, the South was blue.

South has been red ever since. Before Johnson, they were huge supporters of Democrats and Roosevelt and Truman programs.

There is something to what Rep. Moran said it seems, although it is admittedly better now than when I was stationed in the South during the fifties.

Posted by: LL314 | January 27, 2011 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I see the logic. Therefore, using Rep. Moran's logic, all people who voted for a Democrat in 2010 are socialists. Makes perfect sense now.

Posted by: truthsayer | January 27, 2011 4:36 PM | Report abuse

To see if Rep. Moran is right, all you have to do is to go back to the rhetoric of the Republicans over the last two years. Perfect example, the "birthism", that even Rep Cantor does not condemn. Of course the Republican win was based on racism! It irritates so many Republicans because it is so obvious.

Has ANY REPUBLICAN office holder from Hawaii produced a long form birth certificate? Why is it that Obama's is the only one that matters?

If you check out the voting results in VA during the 2008 election, you will find that rural counties voted red in almost all cases and cities voted blue in almost all cases.

In the last election people such as my 18 year old granddaughter college student didn't vote.

The voting turnout in 2010 was skewed toward the white voters. Many people don't pay much attention to off year elections.

In my district, a Republican was elected but I have never even seen a picture of his Democrat opponent.

So, things will be different in 2012 whoever gets elected. I suspect the tea party influence will slightly or largely disappear.

What a scurrilous and easily refutable slur against people who simply refuse to accept Obama's plans to expand government control over everyday lives. If racism were the issue, why did Obama win so handily in 2008 in otherwise "red" states ? Did voters suddenly become racist over two years or do they object to his "socialism lite" policies ?

as reported by several news sources:

"Moran accuses eight-year-old boy of attempted carjacking

In April 2000, Jim Moran accused a black eight-year-old boy at a recreational center parking lot of trying to take his car keys and of threatening to shoot him and steal his campaign-subsidized car (since he apparently couldn’t afford his own despite the $141,300 congressional salary for 2000-2001 he received, not to mention the lifetime health benefits Congress has given itself).

According to the boy’s parents, the boy was merely admiring Moran’s car, a 1999 Toyota Avalon, and told him he liked it. The boy told the Washington Times, “He choked me and then cussed at me. I thought he was going to kidnap or kill me…All I told him was that I liked his car.” Moran responded, “It’s all lies.”

Several witnesses reported seeing a “beet-red” Moran yelling and cursing at the boy as he escorted him into the recreational center.

The boy’s mother said he was a straight-A student at school. His mom filed an official complaint against Moran. Moran responded by criticizing the mom’s parenting: “I had hoped that this boy would learn that this is not acceptable behavior…But if the parents are not going to teach him that this is not acceptable behavior, then maybe the courts will.”

The episode became national news, with NBC’s Today show picking up the story. Moran was accused of racial profiling.

Moran said, “I just wanted to hug him. I wish I could adopt a child like him.”

Considering Moran’s history of temper tantrums, the 8-year-old should probably get the benefit-of-the-doubt."

Rep. Moran is right. I have a friend that is a staunch Republican. He is from New England and never had any ties to the South. During a rather heated political discussion, not a good idea between friends, he did not just call the President an SOB, but a "black SOB". Another acquaintence of mine, a senior sales officer in a major corporation, again from New England, with no ties to the South, cannot stand the fact that we have a black President. Moran is right.

Applying the "racist" logic that appears to be so prevalent here, its very clear that most Democrats are sexist, because they refused to vote for a female vice president in the last election. In fact, they nominated a man instead of a woman candidate in 2008, despite the woman being a much better qualified candidate. No other explanation than sexism.

Johnson 6 red and 44 blue
Nixon 39 and 49 red and 13 and 1 blue

Carter 27 red and 23 blue

Reagan 44 and 49 red and 6 and 1 blue

Bush I 40 red, 10 blue

Clinton 18 and 19 red and 32 and 31 blue

Bush II 30 and 31 red and 20 and 19 blue

Obama 22 red and 28 blue.

They hide behind "it's just his policies" we are talking about, yet the insults have absolutely nothing to do with his policies.

And third, Republicans feel as if they are entitled to say whatever they feel like, give a darn who they offend or how people take what they say. The minute someone does or says the same things back to them, they whine, bi!ch and moan. They can dish it out but not take it.

What a total crock. Rep. Moran can offer no proof that the GOP's success in the last election was won because of racial reasons. His lack of respect and understanding for opposing political beliefs and values is inexcusable for a member of congress. Instead of taking responsibility for the failed fiscal policies that lead to the results of the November election he has pulled out the race card for attention and to ensure the exploited African Americans continue to vote for his party.

Rep. Moran is lacking in character and is obviously angry with the results of the last election. Rather than offer solutions to the numerous problems our nation is facing he is spreading propaganda to the Arab world.

I'd bet my bottom dollar most people who voted Republican in this last election are NOT racists. He's talking about Republicans fueling the hatred in those who ARE racists as a means to get them mobilized and spread the Republican message. Campaigns are won by having organized, MOTIVATED groups of supporters who will go door to door, donate money, pass along emails to their personal email lists etc. Hatred and fear are probably the two best motivators we have and Republicans used that to get their message out. If they didn't, they probably wouldn't have been as successful in this past election. Going forward, this may hurt them, because many of these racist people gravitated to the Tea Party and muted much of the Tea Party's message as well as unfairly tarnished its image. If this continues, and the Tea Party is closely tied to the Republican Party, they may lose crucial independent voters like me in the next election.

Moran should save his hate speech for after Obama's defeat in 2012... than he can charge that whites who voted for Obama in 2008 BECAME racists and abandoned Obama in 2012.

Given that Blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama in 2008 and are expected to do the same in 2012... how does he describe their voting behavior ?

Call me curious.

Wrong. We attacked Bush for 8 years, not the entire Republican Party, and during that time MOST Republicans didn’t even support Bush either because we didn’t elect Bush, Bush was dragged into office by a bunch of crooks who saw that $450 billion dollar surplus and knew they’d have to take the White House in order to get their thieving hands on all that money.

As for Republicans playing nice; hell Republicans are the ones that got us attacked on 9/11, so why should we think Republicans even know HOW to be nice – Republicans had everyone in the world hating us.

We had to elect a Democrat when we wanted “nice.”

1. The Democratic Party was against freeing the slaves.
2. The Democratic Party was for secession.
3. The Democratic Party started the Civil War in order to keep African Americans enslaved.
4. The Democratic Party resisted reconstruction and equal rights after the Civil War.
5. The Democratic Party created the "Jim Crow laws" in the south when they regained control from Republicans.
6. The Democratic Party was responsible for Segregation policies in the south.
7. The military was INTEGRATED until Democrat President Woodrow Wilson SEGREGATED it.
8. The KKK for a hundred years was considered the "military arm" of the Democratic Party.
9. Democrats fought Republicans tooth and nail in order to STOP the Civil Rights movement.
10. Only when North Eastern Democrats defected and supported the Republican Civil Rights efforts did the 1960’s produce the laws now considered the centerpiece of the Civil Rights movement.
11. The Democratic Party evolved in the 1960's into a hybrid Socialist Party and its socialist policy’s seek to re-enslave African Americans under the guise of protecting them from racist policy’s that Democrats themselves instituted.
12. And now the fruit of Democratic Party ideology and its utter failure is shown in an African American community almost completely dependent for even the most basic of needs (subsidized food, housing, etc. etc.) and the removal of the African American man as the bread winner of those families.

What Rep Moran is doing is simply trying to shut down debate by calling people who disagree with Obama and the Democrats racists. This is the oldest trick in the book and only the slow-witted fall for it.

I am a life-long Virginian and have probably voted Democratic 95% of my 40+ voting years. I was a supporter of the civil rights movement back when it wasn't the easiest thing to be. Back then if you wanted to clarify the issue when somebody started in on the "colored" person who moved into the neighborhood, the "colored" child in his kid's classroom, the "colored" woman working in his office, all you had to do was ask one simple question: What is this "colored" person/child/woman doing that you find so objectionable? They couldn't answer this question because what they objected to was the person's race, not his actions. This attitude is the essence of racism.

Objecting to what people do isn't. Ask a person who opposes Obama what he is doing that they find objectionable and then pull up a chair and take out a legal pad. You will have a lot of writing to do.

Oh, BTW, in 2008, Obama got a higher percentage of the white vote than John Kerry did in 2004. Did the US suddenly turn racist in 2 years? Did they not find out that Obama was black until 2010? Whom is he kidding?

I lived in Alexandria for about 35 years and am pretty far to the left so I probably agree with most of Jim Moran's votes but I never considered him a deep thinker. On this issue he is simply wrong.

The congressman is absolutely correct. It’s about time we had some TRUTH telling. If only 5 % of the republicans/ tea party voted against the democrats and the President, in particular, because of race and hatred, they (the republicans/tea-party) won because of RACISM. They surely didn’t discourage nor forfeit any of that support. We have not heard one republican (well maybe one but I can’t think of one) in some position of leadership, denounce the most blatant acts of hate and speech directed against this President and his supporters. No, they are riding that elephant just as far as it can carry them. Republican didn’t hate Sen. Byrd because he was an ex-Klansman, they hated him because he remained a loyal democrat instead switching to the republican party, when all the other Klansman’s made their great exodus. And they hated him because he knew that d’mn constitution and he understood their hearts, their minds and their ambitions.

There's a lot of white-hot rhetoric here, along with a lot of nonsense and some out-right lies. However there is also lot of truth in the suggestion that many, perhaps a majority, of Republicans would prefer to not have a (half) black president. along with a lot of evidence that the GOP is in fact racist and never repudiates avowed racists in their ranks as long as they vote Republican. It's a sorry state of affairs, but racism is one of the hallmarks of the "Party of NO!". That deserves to be said. Often.

WTF!? It was the Clinton administration, through failure to respond to the first WTC attack, the twin African embassy attacks and the attack on the Cole that emboldened Al Qaeda to launch the 9/11 attacks. Clinton himself admitted that he had a shot at bin Laden but refused to take it. Further, the Clinton administration sat back and let the Taliban take control of Afghanistan, giving al Qaeda a safe haven. If anyone it was Democrats that brought it on, not Republicans. Had Al Gore been president during 9/11, he would have been impeached within a year of 9/11 after Congress starting asking the hard questions about the lack of action during the 90's.

Republicans, Conservatives, Rightwingers, and lastly the comical Tea Partiers have never cared for anyone who is Black, Brown, or Red, and poor. They can't stand the fact that Obama is president and complain and berate anything he says, does, or any policy he tries to implement.

The figurehead that was propped up as president, GWB, was intellectually challenged, couldn't speak 5 words without looking at notes, and with the help of his string holders, this puppet ran this country into the ground after 8 years.

President Obama has a 8 year mess to clean up and has only been at it for 2 years. The excuse that these folks spout is, "the huge spending, and the deficet, and reduce the govt. etc. That is all bullcrap! They can't stand the fact that a man of African heritage is in the White House. I hear white co-workers at work make their little negative comments everytime he appears on TV in our break room, how they immediately look away whenever he is featured in a report etc.

The truth is the truth and I'm glad this man had the pair to come out and say it.

A picture is worth a thousand words, during the SOTU address the other night as Obama spoke you could see the expressions of indifference and total lack of ackowledgement on a lot of the faces, some didn't even bother to look at the president, reading etc.

The more things change, the more they stay in this country. Once again Moran is right on point.

Nov. 2010 was about the out of control spending, the hated HC fiasco forced on the people by unseemly measures by our "?representatives?", the economy and unemployment numbers.

The elections were a message to ALL our so-called public servants. Our protests, petitions, phone calls and e-mails fell on deaf ears. The only way we could be heard is at the polls; therefore, a "shellacking".

Unlike most politicians, Jim Moran says what's on his mind. The retired Republican Senator John Warner is like that also.
Maybe it's the air in Northern VA.

Moran is correct. There are racists who vote Republican who would cut Obama some slack if he were white. The birthers and those who believe he is a Muslim are part of that crowd.

These people tend to be those with a high school education or perhaps a year or two of college, more rural than the average American, more likely to be fundamentalist Christian, and quite possibly more Catholic. They're the ones who have been left out of the economy for the last 30 years. I'm surprised they vote for the party that has done the most to put them in that position. But they do.

The "liberal elitist" well-educated city folks look down on these people. They don't fraternize with them. They don't know them. They see them only when something breaks down and they need it fixed. It's an old problem... look up the origin of the word "pagan," and you will see the same issue almost 2000 years ago.

Last century's world wars, the draft, and the New Deal broke down many of the barriers. But the walls have been built again... constructed by both communities. It is unfortunate.

Moran's was wrong to imply that racism is the primary cause of any and all dissatisfaction with Obama. If one were to to apply Moran's flimsy logic, one could easily say that opposition to George Bush was higher among blacks than among whites and therefore had to be driven by racism, not by legitimate disagreement with his policies.

That said, we're well past the point as a nation when the Republican Party should have made a clear, unequivocal statement condemning those who continue to pedal the "Obama is a Kenyan" and the "Obama is a Muslim" pap.

IMO Obama got elected with his viewpoints because he was black. His race attracted people who might have otherwise not bought into his liberal views. Witness the Independents who've falled away when they saw what Obama and all his lefty buddies want to do.

So I guess we are racist - we voted for someone of another race because we thought he would be different from all the other hacks, like this guy, who're in DC.

As far as President Obama delivering on what he said he would? HE HAS and it is what Republicans in Congress will be wasting time, effort and our tax dollars trying to undo. Now, you may not like what he has accomplished but in the two years in office he has done more than George Bush did for our country in eight years. Try googling it with an open mind and actually read for yourself what this President has done. Actually you don't even have to do that . OPEN UP YOUR EYES!!!!

More independants voted R in 2010 than they when Obama ran for President.
I know several Moderate Dems that jumped ship. Not one of them is racist.
To say that the majority of those that voted for fiscal responsability are racist is the like saying that left of center is communists.
Both parties have been excessive in their spending this is just one more way to keep the people bickering instead of opening their eyes to reality.

Jim Moran is 100% correct and finally, someone had the guts to say it!!!!!!!!!! I have felt this way for a long time and it is about time someone said it out loud. We are a lifetime away from being a "post racial" country, it is really sad to come to that realization, but it is true. President Obama has handled this issue with class and dignity, but I cannot help but think that privately, he is hurt by all the hateful things that are said about him and his lovely family. We should be ashamed of ourselves for the way we have behaved, I really thought that after President Obama was elected, we could show the world that the United States had come a long way, but sadly I was mistaken. It is really pathetic that we are still dealing with race issues in 2011, but unfortunately, we are.

The Secret meeting held at the White House earlier this week laid out a plan to attack GOP as Racists? The plan concocked by Obama would help squash the birth certificate question and maybe turn the country against Conservatives? How do you spell Back Fire? Obama and his Liberal party have been working day and night to stop the Patiotic citizens who want a constitutional President.
The left knows Obama is in trouble with 10 states preparing laws forcing Obama to prove he is a citizen removing any chance of being re-elected unless he provides a long form birth record?

Moran and your libbie supporters, esp. in Virginia. If Virginia is so "racist" why did we elect Obama in 2008, and why were we the first US State to elect a black governor?

Posted by: scoran | January 28, 2011 7:10 AM | Report abuse

Moran has a lot of morons commenting here. A lot of you say president Obama would not have been elected if what Moran said was true. He didn't say all white Americans or all people. He said "a lot of people" didn't want a black president. He is absolutely correct and as usual the truth hurts. His "a lot of people" is clear because there are just as many self hating African Americans as there are people of other races who hate and disapprove of any leadership that is African American. You are just showing your true colors by putting words in his mouth that he did not say.

Moran is completely right.

There has been more disrespect shown toward this President than any in my lifetime, all while Obama does nothing but reach out and try to work together, smile, take the punches, turn the other cheek. Joe Wilson's shout at last year's SOTU was the same as yelling "f* you." No one dared to do that before we had a black President. (And don't start with the half-white stuff. To Americans, anyone who looks like Obama does is considered black. They're not thinking of him as half and half.)

The racism is obvious. Look at the tea party signs and see how many are based on racial stereotypes rather than taking issue with Obama's actions or policy positions. The same people who celebrated the unitary executive three years ago now don't want the President to be able to allocate so much as a pencil without giving more tax breaks to the wealthy.

Part of the hatred is that he is a Democrat, and the right hates a Democratic President. But the real fuel on the fire is that we have a black President. A significant number of white people find that threatening. (I'm white, and I'm happy to have Obama as my President and Moran as my Congressman.)

Keep speaking the truth, Congressman.

Liberals need to keep fueling the race and class warfare.

When people are able to be independent they realize all the democrats are doing is keeping a hand in your pocket for their cut.

Based on the overwhelming racism, bigotry, and overall anti-government extremism demonstrated by the right wing and the Tea Baggers where exactly is Moran mistaken in his historical analogy?

xcrunner771, I have looked at the Tea Party signs and I really don't see anything concerning race. I have also looked at the anti-Bush signs and found them very offensive even if I didn't always agree with Bush. I truly think Moran has a mental problem and I wonder how anyone could be happy with both Obama and Moran representing them unless that person is helpless and needs to have government in all aspects of their lives. Don't forget that VA had the first black governor and the majority of Virginians voted for Obama so I think it's a stretch to play the race card. The "slaveholding" states weren't the only ones who voted for Republicans in November so I really have to conclude Moran and anyone who supports him is just out of touch with what people want from their government.

Posted by: RichmondReader2 | January 28, 2011 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Let me get this straight. Obama gets elected to the Presidency. Voters overwhelmingly vote for the oppostion party, like they do in most off-Presidential election year. However, this time it's because we're all racists? The same voters that voted him President are racists for voting GOP in the non-Presidential election year elections? The polls that showed we voted that way because we hate the record deficit spending and hate the bloated health care bill must be taken by racist, lying poll takers. Moran, when you and your party screw up, and we punish you for it, for God sake, STOP screaming racism. Moran you are a moron!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Alexandria1962 | January 28, 2011 6:54 PM | Report abuse

The 2010 elections had nothing to do with racism -- the 2008 elections had everything to do with racism. Moran should change his name to Moron because he is truly an idiot. People were fed up with the elitism that phonies like Pelosi and Reid spew at the expense of the disadvantaged. Remember their only reason for pretending to support illegal aliens is to get their votes. The stupid idiot Moran can't seem to differentiate between sh#t & shine-ola!!

Jim Moran is a race baiting piece of human garbage. The very same white people he is ranting against now are the ones who voted Obama in to begin with. God forbid the reality is that they saw the mistake they made and took steps to undo it.
