Ticer endorses Arlington school board member to replace her in senate

By Rosalind S. Helderman

Retiring state Sen. Patsy Ticer (D-Alexandria) has endorsed Arlington School Board member Libby Garvey to replace her in November, according to Garvey's campaign.

In a statement, Ticer says Garvey is a "fast study and is committed to the issues important to me."

Garvey's campaign says Ticer will participate in a campaign kick-off event in April.

Though the exact boundaries of the senate district will not be clear until redistricting is completed next month, the Arlington/Alexandria area that Ticer has represented has been one of the state's most reliably Democratic. For that reason, the November election outcome will likely be determined by the Aug. 23 Democratic primary.

A tough race is shaping up for the Democratic nod between Garvey, Del. Adam Ebbin and Alexandria City Council member Rob Krupicka.

Ticer had suggested she was likely to endorse Garvey when she announced last month that she did not plan to run for reelection, indicating that she would prefer to be replaced by a woman so the number of women in the state senate did not dip with her retirement. But she said then that she knew all three likely candidates and respected each.

In a statement Garvey called Ticer a "role model" and she hoped to "continue her legacy of style and grace" in the state senate.

Libby Garvey will get my vote when she shows some leadership and does something about the new hire superintendent who is allegedly running good educators out of the Arlington public school system. The County Board hired a dud and quickly made amends by making Barbara Donellan the new County Manager. I moved to Arlington for the schools. People talk, especially parents of school-age children. The inside scoop suggests validity to the claims of the outspoken and recently retired Williamsburg principal. Until Garvey appoints a new and improved superintendent, my votes goes to Adam Ebbin. No doubt about it, Ebbin is a leader, not a don't-make-waves politician. Ebbin is an out of the closet gay (in the Old Dominion!), supported marijuana decrim last year and once brought an Imam into the General Assembly to lead a prayer. Ebbin is Jewish. His progressive brand of politics is perfect for over-educated Arlington over-achievers.

Krupicka just lost.

I guess Patsy's word doesn't count for much, eh Rob?
