McWaters's momentum in Va Beach senate race
In Virginia Beach's soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat, all the buzz in recent days has been about Jeff McWaters. The businessman vying for the Republican nomination in Saturday's firehouse primary received the backing of his hometown newspaper, the Virginian Pilot and the National Rifle Association. And now, Lt. Bill Bolling, has endorsed McWaters over fellow Republican Rosemary Wilson, who serves on the Virginia Beach City Council. The recently re-elected lieutenant governor has put his name on mailers, recorded a robo call for McWaters and cut a radio ad for him. In the GOP-leaning district where the Democrats have yet to field a candidate, Saturday's primary may be tantamount to winning the Jan. 12 special election to replace retiring Sen. Ken Stolle, who was elected Virginia Beach sheriff....

Palin's book tour comes to Virginia
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will travel to Virginia this weekend for the seventh stop of her national tour to promote her book, Going Rogue: An American Life. Palin, the 2008 vice presidential nominee, will appear at a Barnes & Noble in Roanoke at 10 a.m. Sunday -- the first Virginia stop on the much ballyhooed tour. She's expected in Fairfax County in a couple weeks. Check out the Post stories on Palin's first two stops in Michigan and Indiana where crowds lined up early to catch a glimpse of the possible presidential hopeful and get their books signed. The Roanoke Times reports that more than 1,000 people are expected to turn out. Local Republican officials are expected to attend, but no statewide officials. And yes, that includes Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell, who distanced himself from the controversial conservative figure during his campaign....

'Fairfax's Own' Pays Homage
Bob McDonnell's visit to a Fairfax County GOP breakfast pep rally yesterday was a homecoming of sorts. The Burke Fire Department hall was surrounded with those familiar "Fairfax's Own" signs, and the more than 300 activists getting pumped over coffee and pancakes were more than happy to claim him as their own. But the visit also offered an acknowledgement of the role the county has played this year in reviving Republican hopes after a morale-crushing few years in the once-red state. McDonnell, who leads Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in the polls, gave a particular shout-out to Fairfax supervisors Pat Herrity and John Cook, whose better-than-expected performances in a couple of elections (along with the success of Republican Frank Fannon and GOP-endorsed independent Alicia Hughes in Alexandria and a close House of Delegates special election in Arlington) helped create momentum for Virginia Republicans this year. ""Pat Herrity and John Cook, the...

Biden Fundraises for Virginia Democrats
Vice President Joe Biden spoke Thursday night at a fundraising reception at the home of former Virginia senator and governor Chuck Robb, for three freshman Virginia House Democrats facing tough re-election campaigns. Biden, speaking inside an open-air pool house inside Robb's McLean mansion, noted that two of the three Democrats in attendance - U.S. Reps. Glenn Nye and Tom Perriello - would face difficult challenges in their more traditionally conservative Virginia districts. "I don't have to tell you that you're in a very competitive state," he said. "You got some tough votes coming up." He noted that the third Virginia House Democrat - U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, a former Fairfax County supervisor - had a "few liberals" in his left-leaning Northern Virginia district. He called the triumvirate "independent minded" and "damn competent," but united on several core Democratic Party themes, including energy policy and health care. "These guys are smart....

The Kitchen Table
Welcome to a new weekly feature on the Virginia politics blog called "The Kitchen Table," which we hope will bring you interesting and illuminating glimpses into the lives of those regular folks who probably don't read this blog but dutifully embrace their democratic responsibilities when called upon to do so. We're talking about voters. Our first installment takes us to the McLean Hilton, where President Obama made his first public appearance with Creigh Deeds (D) yesterday in support of the latter's run for governor. Earlier this week we told you about how some people's anxiety over Obama's domestic agenda could influence their vote for governor this fall, to Republican Bob McDonnell's advantage. But the 1,500 who showed up for yesterday's rally proved that Obama's blessing was still a major plus for a lot of voters. Some, like Bonnae Powers, 43, a human resources director from Fairfax, were drawn by a...

Chopra to White House
Aneesh P. Chopra, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's secretary of technology, will be named President Obama's information technology chief. Obama will make the announcement in his weekly radio address tomorrow, according to sources close to Kaine. Chopra had been under consideration for months for a job in the Obama administration, including technology chief at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Chopra had put in long hours in Washington helping Obama's transition team get him ready for his first day as president job Jan. 20. He was one of about 50 volunteers from across the nation serving on the transition's technology, innovation and government reform policy working group. Chopra did not return messages for comment today. Chopra, former managing director with the Advisory Board Company, a publicly-traded health care think tank serving nearly 2,500 hospitals and health systems, has considered running for office himself....
