The senate's Rehabilitation and Social Services committee rejected an effort by a Republican to put consideration of the governor's plan to privatize state liquor stores Friday, essentially putting a final nail in the coffin of the proposal's legislative chances.

Is ABC bill hibernating -- or is it dead?
"Today is Groundhog Day. Today has turned out to be like every other day since January 20 when I introduced House Bill 2456, the governor's ABC privatization plan," Brink said. " I wake up in the morning filled with the hope that today will be the day my bill gets a hearing."

N. Va. delegate has new proposal to privatize liquor stores -- sort of
Del. David B. Albo (R-Fairfax) thinks he may have come up with a new way to privatize the state's liquor stores, only this way Virginia doesn't really privatize the stores -- but it just might reap the financial benefits. Albo has introduced HB2182, replacing the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control with an independent agency which he said would be exempt from procurement and employment rules. "Why can't we apply private sector principles to the ABC?'' he said. "With the ABC debate, I've always been wondering why we're going around and around and around to make more money for the state of Virginia on ABC. There's a reason why all these private companies want to bid all this money. They can do it cheaper. It's because they don't have all these different rules." The Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority would be run by a chief executive selected by a board named by...

McDonnell 'pleased' Democrats introduced liquor bill in House of Delegates
The partisan fun has really begun now. First, House Democrats laughed about how they were outmaneuvering Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell by introducing his bill to privatize the state liquor stores after no Republican delegate did. Now McDonnell is saying through a spokesman that's he's "pleased" that Del. Robert H. Brink (D-Arlington) -- the House Democrats' political leader and a member of McDonnell's Commission on Government Reform, which debated liquor privatization -- introduced the bill. "We appreciate the House Democrats choosing Delegate Brink for this important legislation,'' said McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin. "His serious reputation confirms that, by sponsoring this bill, he endorses ending this archaic government monopoly. We know he wouldn't put his good name on a measure that he doesn't support. We will review his legislation closely prior to making specific comments about it." Brink, of course, has expressed opposition to the liquor privatization proposal several times. "What I...
