Bolling, Cuccinelli play key roles in Senate abortion vote

Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R) got to burnish his gubernatorial credentials with the GOP base by casting decisive vote to regulate state abortion clinics as hospitals. But his potential rival, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R), also played a role.

Former chief justice Leroy Hassell lies in state in Virginia Capitol

Hundreds of mourners walked slowly and quietly Friday past the flag-draped casket of Leroy R. Hassell Sr., the first black chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court, whose body lay in state in the ornate rotunda in the historic Capitol. The wooden casket covered by Virginia's dark blue flag was guarded by State Police and Capitol Police officers in dress blue uniforms and white gloves. Hassell, a Harvard-educated lawyer considered a mentor to many in Virginia's legal and political community, died Wednesday at the age of 55 after a long illness. He stepped down as chief justice on Jan. 31 but had three years remaining in his 12-year term on the bench....

UPDATED: Virginia lieutenant governor breaks rare Senate tie

Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R) has broken a rare 20 to 20 tie in the Virginia Senate, casting his vote with a bill that would alter the state's schedule for reviewing its two-year budget.

McDonnell, other Virginia officials snag football tickets, conference lodging and other swag

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) got free airfare from his alma mater to attend a football game at the University of Notre Dame last year, a trip to the National Governors Association meeting from the chairman of the board of footwear company Crocs Inc., and a painting of George Washington from the Virginia National Guard Foundation.

Virginia General Assembly kicks off with prayer breakfast

Festivities surrounding the first day of the Virginia General Assembly's annual session kicked off Wednesday morning with a prayer breakfast attended by more than 1,000 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
