Va. tea party chairwoman to step aside as she ponders Senate run

Here's one more sign Jamie Radtke may be inching closer to a run for U.S. Senate. Radtke, chairwoman of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation, did not seek a second term during the group's closed-door elections this weekend. The federation, comprised of about 50 people representing tea party groups across the state, elected a slate of seven leaders. Radtke confirmed that she will be replaced Feb. 1 by Mark Kevin Lloyd, who serves as vice chairman. Last week, Radtke told us she is considering running for U.S. Senate as a Republican in 2012. At least four other Republicans are interested in running against Democrat Sen. Jim Webb -- if he seeks reelection: former senator and governor George Allen; Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors; Del. Bob Marshall (Prince William) and Bert Mizusawa, a businessman and attorney who ran against Rep.-elect Scott Rigell in Hampton...

McDonnell, Va. congressional delegation to meet with Gates on proposed defense cuts

Gov. Bob McDonnell and members of Virginia's congressional delegation will finally meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates about proposed defense cuts, including the recommended closure of the Joint Forces Command, a military installation employing more than 6,000 in Hampton Roads. Joining McDonnell Tuesday morning will be former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis, who chairs the Governor's Commission on Military and National Security Facilities, and Terrie Suit, assistant to the governor for commonwealth preparedness. McDonnell (R) has been requesting a meeting for months, but with little success. Instead, he and members of the congressional delegation held a breakfast meeting Sept. 28 at the Pentagon with Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn and Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "The governor is looking forward to Tuesday's meeting,'' McDonnell spokeswoman Taylor Thornley said. "It is an opportunity to speak directly to the Secretary of Defense about the importance...

McDonnell names Davis to Metropolitian Washington Airports Authority

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has named former representative Tom Davis (R) to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, a key Northern Virginia post that oversees the area's two big airports, the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles rail project. Davis replaces David G. Speck, an appointee of Gov. Mark Warner (D) whose term is ending. Davis's appointment becomes effective Nov. 24. Davis is currently the director of federal government affairs at Deloitte LLP. His wife, Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, is a former state senator and serves as McDonnell's liaison in Washington. The Davis appointment is one of a number of appointments made by McDonnell on Friday. He also named Craig M. Burns, a 22-year state financial analyst, as Virginia's Tax Commissioner. Burns had held the job on an interim basis since July, after the unexpected death of Commissioner Jeanie Bowen. He reappointed Paula I. Otto as executive director of the Virginia Lottery,...

State GOP will vote on how to nominate 2012 U.S. Senate pick

The Republican Party of Virginia's governing board will decide this month whether to choose its 2012 nominee for U.S. Senate through a primary or at a convention. While that decision seem like mere internal party machinations, its repercussions are far-reaching. Historically, conventions almost always produce the most conservative candidate. Efforts to appeal to party activists can create complications for the eventual nominee, who has to run in all regions of the state, including left-leaning Northern Virginia. Former U.S. representative Tom Davis, a moderate, spent years preparing to run for the Senate but abandoned those plans in 2008 when he was unable to get the state party to hold a primary instead of a convention. At least three Republicans are interested in running against Democrat Sen. Jim Webb -- if he seeks reelection -- former senator George Allen; Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors; and Del....

McDonnell, congressmen to fight defense cuts in Virginia

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and members of Virginia's congressional delegation vowed Thursday to fight Defense Secretary Robert Gates's decision to shutter the Joint Forces Command, a military installation in Hampton Roads, and to slash the Pentagon's military contracting budget by 10 percent a year for the next three years. "The decision by Secretary Gates...is one that is very shortsightened and is one that has not gone about anywhere near the documentation that would be needed in order to make a colossal change of this kind,'' McDonnell said. "I think the concern most of us have is that this was done in a very hasty way with no demonstrable savings to the United States or to the Department of Defense." At the first meeting of McDonnell's statewide military commission, members focused on Gates's Aug. 9 decision which McDonnell said could cost Virginia thousands of jobs and have a devastating impact on...

Former GOP congressman Davis calls Cuccinelli health care suit 'uphill case'

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli believes his suit against the federal health care law has a "better than even" chance of success, but there are plenty of doubters. On NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt Thursday, former Rep. Tom Davis (R) said he believed the "precedents are there" to support the law's constitutionality. "He's got an uphill case," Davis said. Less surprisingly, U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D) called Cuccinelli's legal interpretation "nuts." "He's a radical in terms of his interpretation of the constitution. There's just so much precedent for doing the kinds of things that are entailed in health care reform," Moran said. But Cuccinelli does have some legal scholars on his side....
