In feisty radio interview, Saslaw fights back on car title lending, abortion regulation

Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw (D) faced down an unexpected caller on WAMU's Politics Hour -- Del. Glenn Oder (R-Newport News), calling to castigate Saslaw for sponsoring a bill to reverse a six-month-old ban on Virginia car title lenders giving cash to out-of-state drivers.

Beyer rules out Virginia Senate race

Don Beyer, a former Democratic lieutenant governor who now serves as ambassador to Switzerland and the principality of Liechtenstein, says he is not interested in running for U.S. Senate in 2012. Beyer is one of the many potential candidates who has been mentioned to replace U.S. Sen. James Webb (D), who recently announced he would not run for a second term. "Serving the people of Virginia as a U.S. Senator would be an extraordinary honor,'' Beyer writes us from Switzerland. "However, Megan and I love our current role in Switzerland and Liechtenstein -- the work is important and interesting, it is fulfilling to serve our country and President, and we enjoy the people, culture, languages, and landscapes of our temporary home." Kaine tells enthusiastic Virginia Democrats he needs more time

Hundreds of Democrats from across Virginia descended on the capital city Saturday night to raise money for the state party, catch up with longtime friends and, of course, speculate about who might run for U.S. Senate next year. The state party's biggest fundraiser of the year turned into a guessing game as activists contemplated who among their party might run to replace U.S. Sen. Jim Webb in one of the most-closely watched Senate races of 2012. Timothy M. Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, former Virginia governor and possible candidate, was greeted by enthusiastic crowds of activists in his hometown by those wanting him to run. Obama: Kaine would be 'a great senator'

President Obama said Wednesday that Timothy M. Kaine would make a "great senator" for Virginia, but did not apply any public pressure on his friend to enter the 2012 contest to succeed retiring Sen. James Webb (D).

Back from Middle East, Perriello will 'consider' running for Senate if Kaine doesn't

Former Rep. Tom Perriello (D) said Wednesday that he would "consider" running to succeed retiring Sen. James Webb (D) in 2012, but only if Tim Kaine decides not to make the race.

Competing efforts launched to draft Democrats for Virginia Senate run

The chairman of the Montgomery County, Va. Democratic committee has launched an Internet effort to convince former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) to run for the Senate seat that will become open with U.S. Sen. Jim Webb's retirement in 2012.
