Local Venture Capital Deals From the Last Quarter
Wondering who got venture capital financing in the past quarter? A survey released last week by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association shows that more than 50 Washington-area firms received a total of $271.8 million from investors. Investments in the second quarter spread across the life sciences, telecommunications, software and Internet sectors, with some of the biggest deals going to biotech companies.
Intrexon, a Blacksburg-based biotech, received the largest single investment, a $25 million later-stage infusion of capital from Radford-based Third Security LLC. Intrexon seeks to develop therapies for diseases that can't be treated using traditional drug remedies. Not every deal during the quarter was in the multi-million dollar range: the Maryland Technology Development Corp. made eight investments of $100,000 or less.
