Discovery Hires National Geographic Executive

Discovery Communications announced today that John Ford will be returning to the Silver Spring cable media company to run its Military and Discovery Times channels. (See Discovery's statement.)

Ford has spent the past four years working as a programming executive at the National Geographic Channel, where he helped boost prime-time ratings by more than 150 percent, according to Discovery's statement. The programs he helped develop include the "Dog Whisperer" series, as well as "Inside 9/11" and "In the Womb".

Before his stint at National Geographic, Ford worked for 13 years at Discovery. He helped launch and expand networks including TLC and Discovery Health. The networks won several awards during his first tour through Discovery, including two Peapodys and 13 Emmy nominations.

"This is a real homecoming for me," Ford in a statement. "Military Channel and Discovery Times are great brands with so much promise and potential. I am excited to build upon their growing audience share, and take the brands to the next level of growth and success."
