Up and Down: Taking a Break

For a variety of reasons, Up & Down probably will not be around for the next three Mondays. I apologize for the absence. You can see the list of the top gainers and losers in Monday's Washington Business section every week.

Today I can point out a couple of things, however: Shares of Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) fell 23 and 26 percent, respectively, last week. They're now down 86 percent and 90 percent in the past 52 weeks.

Also, a lot of companies on the list of our top 10 losers reported earnings last week, including Emergent BioSolutions (EBS, down 22 percent last week), Cogent Communications (CCOI, 21 percent), Advisory Board Co. (ABCO, 18 percent) and Tier Technologies (TIER, down 10 percent).
