Kevin Plank: Schmoozing With His Customers

Tom Heath's "Value Added" column moves to Mondays, but that isn't stopping him from sharing a little insight he picked up at lunch today:

Kevin A. Plank, chairman and chief executive of Baltmore-based Under Armour, the sports apparel company, is hardly the sort who spends all his time in the office.

He is headed to Montgomery County on Saturday to open a new Under Armour store at the Montgomery County Mall.

Then it's off to Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech-University of Texas game on Saturday night. Texas Tech is a big Under Armour customer and Plank wants to show the flag, schmooze and maker sure his client is happy. He does this all the time, visiting dozens of college and professional athletic events during every year.

"It's all about customer relations," he said.

He told me Friday that his idea of relaxation is spending a few hours on a Saturday at a sporting goods store to see how Under Armour is moving.

But don't feel too sorry for him. After Saturday night's game, he is heading to Augusta, Ga., where he is going to play a round of golf with Peter Coors, a member of the family that founded and owned Coors Beer>, at Augusta National golf club.

Plank told me he has been working like mad on his golf game over the past two weeks. He wants to get invited back.
