The Washington Post's permanent investigative unit was set up in 1982 under Bob Woodward.
Three Investigations
Inspired by The Washington Post's Watergate investigation, Los Angeles developer Selden Ring endowed the richest prize in journalism to encourage newspapers to produce investigative reporting of the highest caliber. The Selden Ring Award is unique in that it places a primary emphasis on the results generated by the reporting. The prize, which has been handed out since 1990, is administered by the USC Annenberg School. Unlike the Pulitzer Prizes or the George Polk Awards, only one Selden Ring Award is given out per year. It comes with $35,000.
Roughly 80 to 100 investigative reporting projects are entered in the competition. As a former judge for the prize, I can attest that the quality of the entrants is so high that the competition is extremely fierce among the final 20.
This year's Selden Ring Award went to two Post reporters, Dana Priest and Anne Hull, for their groundbreaking investigation of abusive conditions at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The finalists were the New York Times for "A Toxic Pipeline," an investigation that traced toxic chemicals in drugs that killed people in Panama back to China, and resulted in recalls in 30 countries and the FDA's decision to halt the import of diethylene glycol from China; and the Chicago Tribune, for "Hidden Hazards," which looked at problems at the Consumer Product Safety Commission and resulted in the recall of 1 million full-sized cribs, the largest such recall in U.S. history.
