Unfortunately I believe that we are limited in what we can focus on. I think that if we proceed with the partisan sideshow of prosecuting Bush admin. officials, healthcare will get lost in the brouhaha.

Federal Bailout, Mahoney Scandal, ACORN

POSTED: 10:51 AM ET, 10/14/2008 by Chris Matthews

Federal Bailout » Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson announced yesterday that the government would invest $250 billion in the country's banks, forcing nine of the largest to accept a treasury stake in what amounts to a partial nationalization ... Paulson invoked bank executives' patriotism in his plea to them to sell the government a stake in their companies ... The Dow Jones responded with its largest point gain ever, just days after it had its steepest weekly decline in history ... world markets followed suit, as Asian and European markets rallied ... The rally continued today as U.S. stocks surged at the opening bell ... Barack Obama advocated an immediate and expensive economic assistance package Monday, including an additional $60 billion in tax breaks and other benefits. John McCain is expected to unveil his proposals today. — The Washington Post.

Scandal Embroils Congressman » Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fla.) requested an ethics investigation of himself yesterday after ABC News reported that he paid hush money to a former mistress who once worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him. Mahoney, who won GOP Rep. Mark Foley's seat in 2006, did not address whether the allegations were true but said that he would be "vindicated" by the investigation. — The Washington Post

ACORN Controversy » The McCain campaign has continued its attacks against the community organizing group ACORN, asserting that the group is partially responsible for the current economic crisis ... meanwhile, The Atlantic points out that McCain was the keynote speaker at a 2006 rally on immigration hosted by the group... Obama campaign officials found themselves forced last week to correct an erroneous assertion made on the campaign's "Fight the Smears" webpage that "Barack was never an ACORN trainer and never worked for ACORN in any other capacity." — The Washington Post, The Atlantic, ABC News

China Milk Scandal » China is ordering all liquid and powdered milk manufactured before Sept. 14 to be taken off the shelves for melamine testing, the first time Beijing has issued a blanket recall of products since the tainted dairy scandal broke last month ... meanwhile, a Chinese family filed a lawsuit against the company at the heart of the scandal yesterday, the first court action by a family of a child who died.— The Associated Press

Abuse Alleged at California Senior Living Facility » An investigation sparked by a suspicious death at an upscale senior living facility in California has expanded to include the alleged abuse of three more elderly residents, including a 78-year-old woman who was allegedly body-slammed into her bed, according to court records and interviews. — Los Angeles Times

NSA Eavesdropping Probe » The Democratic chairman and the ranking Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee have opened a second Congressional investigation into a media report that U.S. intelligence personnel eavesdropped, recorded and stored the private, personal phone calls of American journalists, aid workers and soldiers serving in Iraq. — ABC News

McCain at ACORN Rally

McCain pallin with ACORN

Posted by: Mr. Unite Us | October 14, 2008 11:01 AM

“I THINK WHEN YOU SPREAD THE WEALTH AROUND, IT’S GOOD FOR EVERYBODY.” What Barack means is for government taking from one group of people (the people who worked hard and earned it) and giving it to those who did not earned it (welfare cheats).

WELCOME TO BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA’S NEW AMERICA, IT’S CALLED REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH and his tax cuts for 95% of America is nothing more than Government welfare for people that don’t pay taxes at all. Haven’t we already been down this path ? This was done in the 70’s and the Democrats are bent on bringing it back.

One of Barack Obama’s most potent campaign claims is that he’ll cut taxes for no less than 95% of “working families.” He’s even promising to cut taxes enough that the government’s tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% — which is lower than it is today.
It’s a clever pitch, because it lets him pose as a middle-class tax cutter while disguising that he’s also proposing one of the largest tax increases ever on the other 5%. But how does he conjure this miracle, especially since more than a third of all Americans already pay no income taxes at all? There are several sleights of hand, but the most creative is to redefine the meaning of “tax cut.”

Will hard working Americans support to cater to the ”parasite class” and bury the American worker further? Mission almost accomplished.

"Acorn" is a conservative alarm word which is unfair.

Absolutely huge amounts of taxpayer money are being gifted to the rich and privileged in the interest of the economy. So what if smaller amounts are also set aside for the less privileged for the same purpose? Why isn't "trickle up" as worthy as "trickle down"?

We all know that the American economy has been consumer driven for decades.

How can anyone that is keeping up with what is going on in all the battle states not see that there is corruption in this organization...SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THEIR PRACTICES AND VOTER FRAUD---WHY CAN'T EVERY STATE DEMAND A PHOTO ID WHEN THEY GO IN TO GET THEIR BALLOT AND VOTE

Posted by: P Austin | October 14, 2008 12:04 PM

Acorn has a long history of fraud and corruption. It is now poisoning the election 2008. It should be smashed using RICO. And the sooner the better. Obama and the Dems are right in the thick of it. It's an Obamanation.

Posted by: Gretchen | October 14, 2008 12:13 PM

Yep the end of the race is near..muwahahaha. I see the rightys are once again grasping at straws.

Posted by: rottnkid | October 14, 2008 12:27 PM

Gretchen: Did you cackle that way near the end of the past two elections? Dems have it easy in that they aren't held to any standard at all, corruption is accepted (and even encouraged), and the media completely sweeps it all under the rug. As my recent bumper sticker stated: "If the media told the truth, nobody would vote Democrat". Romney is trashed for being a Christian, yet "what does it matter if Hussein Obama is a Muslim?" gets spouted. Dems have forgotten 9/11, and think that we should sing Kum By Yah and holds hands with our enemies. You're thinking baffles (and concerns) me. Hypocrisy is the Dems M.O.

Posted by: Jeff | October 14, 2008 12:36 PM

Gretchen: sorry for the above, it was intended for rottnkid.

Posted by: jeff | October 14, 2008 12:37 PM

My GOD! Can't anyone think for themselves these days? Why do all these posts sound so damn familiar? Regurgitated catch phrases and campaign propaganda. Are you simply cutting and pasting out of lack of any free thought of your own?

Republic, oligarchy, kleptocracy, empire, social democracy. Our country has entertained and will continue to entertain concepts such as these throughout its time on the planet. I suggest you eat your bumper stickers, stop thinking you have anything interesting to say unless it's YOUR OWN WORDS, and continue taking everything so personally that you choke with rage.

ACORN is THE October surprise these Republican MFs are preparing, you'll see.

Posted by: Sam | October 14, 2008 1:43 PM

ACORN is a group that my teenage daughter and other members of our church volunteer for to fight homelessness. It's a group that has done a lot of good for low income people and it's a shame that McCain supporters are now trying to tie a really helpful organization to some nebulous vast conspiracy.

I can't wait to get some of that money Obama's promising as told to the plumber who said his taxes were too high. Obama told him Spread the wealth. It doesn't matter the plumber worked sixteen hours a day just to get ahead. I say Obama says Spread the wealth. Take it from the so-called rich(hard working middle class) and give to the poor. Spread the wealth. Spread the wealth!!!!!!!!

""Dems have it easy in that they aren't held to any standard at all, corruption is accepted (and even encouraged), and the media completely sweeps it all under the rug""

I swear, I just read this above. The last eight years have seen the most corrupt administration since Tammany Hall. You Republicans have had drug users, closet homo's, pedophiles, money laundering, and everything else including spitting on the sidewalks. I wouldn't be talking too loud about free rides. You haven't seen a lot of convictions. Bush, Cheney, Rummey, Rice and that whole crew are being considered by the Hague for war crimes. The U.S Attoutney is considering charges for illegally starting this war. The entire economy is melting down because of mismanagemnet. I think what you meant to say was, " I'm sorry for ever voting Republican, and I'm changing party's if they'll have me."!!

Posted by: Marcus | October 14, 2008 1:54 PM

If you say it loud and often enough, people will believe it. And the band played on.... I leave it to you

Almost everyone seems to be blaming Bush & the Republicans for the economic crisis
As reported by a liberal Houston paper: Nixon presided over one of the most regulatory periods of the last 1/2 century. Democrat J. Carter later began the deregulatory era that has continued w/notable breaks to the present. ..It was the Carter administration that instituted cost benefits analyses for new regulations & deregulated airlines, railroads & trucking industries.
Go ahead & blame it all on the Republicans if it makes y feel better. Wait & see what Obama will do to America, you naive brainwashed people

Posted by: love234america | October 14, 2008 1:55 PM

Now that Obama has been tied to the corrupt practices of Acorn it makes me wonder if they used the same corrupt practices to defeat Hillary in the Primaries? So much for change we can believe in.

ACORN is an organization that reflects an essential role of this somewhat hobbling democracy right now. It appears that it has an internal quality control, oversight or - um - "regulation" problem. Tell me. Is it any different than what has been happening on wall street? ACORN is well aware of what constitutes voter fraud, and what the requirements for registration are ... that they would suddenly produce FIVE thousand forms all in the same handwriting, all signed with the same signature (style?) seems very bizarre. In fact, so bizarre that it reminds me of subtle voter harassment in third world countries. I hope indeed there is a lot of investigation into where that particular batch came from! Because I am sure ACORN understands dead people can't vote unless of course, you are living in the third world ... where they notoriously take a sojourn from their resting place to support their country of - uh - rest. Times are hard, people need money. Was Acorn paying per registration? And who else would pay for other things? How strange is it that someone testifies that they were harassed until they registered 75 times?? When the rules ARE known within the system - and they will know that the registration would be either caught or blocked. Was someone paying other than Acorn? Just as a matter of logic? ACORN would certainly ask a number of questions because, if their integrity really is aligned with poor people voting and being heard - they would want to do a good job. So maybe they will look at their training, figuring out how much understanding there is with their street teams, are the brochures/training documents clear enough, how can they improve on oversight which seems really relevant ... when that is all cleared - there still seems to be an odd factor that functions. The last two elections were tainted by charges that ONE the electronic voting system was either hacked or faulty (one state didn't even run systematic internal reliability checks), or just simply fraudulent as in Florida. So it begs an implicit question of what is going on? -- create distraction in another area - obscure so that it is hard to see who is doing what. Overload the system ... wow. The whole thing does seem awfully bizarre to me ...

What do yu expect out of the Washington Post. It is just a liberal rag sheet full of lies and ignores the truth. DO NOT BUY THE WASHINGTON POST and they will go out of business.

Posted by: bill | October 14, 2008 2:06 PM

Manolete: Actually the ones who worked hard for the money are the ones who need it and the ones who did nothing are the ones who have it. Do you honestly think that those rich corporate heads would have all that money if it wasn’t for the hard working middle class employee developing the product for them to sell? Do you really think banks got wealthy without those hardworking underpaid bank tellers and customers service people who put up with unbearable customers to encourage them to return for more business? The fact is that while the rich man spends his time playing golf and planning parties the middle class underpaid hardworking employee is making their company work so they get richer. It is time the middle class is rewarded for producing the idea the rich man stole from someone else.

It is disgusting that ACORN is funded by the federal government, they should be shut down NOW. The government already takes 50% of my income,so if I am taxed anymore I plan on quitting my job, having an out of wedlock baby, and letting the government pay for my food, housing, medicine and education. If all of us paying excessive taxes quit our jobs, I think the communist/socialists in this country will get the message. By the way, the welfare family down the street from me live completely off the government and have a nicer house than I do and they also just bought a brand new car with their drug money.

Posted by: Piper | October 14, 2008 2:08 PM

Manolete- Why don't you educate yourself as to what socialism means before spouting your mouth about things you obviously do not understand. Fear and shame are not helpful in perilous times silly wabbitt.

You and your Republican ilk are about to be booted from the world stage on Nov 4th and for good reason. Your fear based ideology has destroyed this country. It will be a pleasure to see you and the Republicans go the way of the dinosaur as reasoning, thoughtful Americans take bake our country after 14 years of Republican disaster.

Posted by: ProudLiberal | October 14, 2008 2:11 PM

Funny how the Post used to investigate corruption, remember Watergate. Now they just ignore what is not good for their own agenda. If they do report it, they leave out any facts that could hurt their agenda. What is their agenda? Robin Hood - take from the rich who earned it and give to the poor to lazy to earn their own.

Posted by: Joan | October 14, 2008 2:11 PM

People say that Obama is a socialist. I don't think he is a socialist. I think that he has the clear view of where the country should be heading.

Isn't bush admin already doing the same thing. They are giving out our hard earned tax money to companies. Isn't that socialism? Isn't that the taking money from someone and giving it to someone else ???

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 2:14 PM

///Isn't bush admin already doing the same thing. They are giving out our hard earned tax money to companies. Isn't that socialism? Isn't that the taking money from someone and giving it to someone else ???///

You are forgetting the is a loan that the taxpayer is getting 5% on every dollar the bank get from Bush. Try to get 5% at your bank.

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 2:17 PM

Well, it looks like the right wing bigots can only get their thoughts (if you can call them that) across by SCREAMING IN ALL CAPS...
Yes, when average people are turned off by your stupidity, just SCREAM AT THEM. That works every time. Not.

Posted by: Patrick | October 14, 2008 2:18 PM

"You are forgetting the is a loan that the taxpayer is getting 5% on every dollar the bank get from Bush. Try to get 5% at your bank."

do you really think that this going to happen?? When is the last time you got money from Government since your money was used to save a bank??

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 2:20 PM

No one is "GIVING" anybody anything. These are loans with good returns for the American people. If Obama becomes president he will just have to make sure we get the return expected. Now that should not be too hard for him since he thinks he is God's gift to the American people.

Posted by: Sue | October 14, 2008 2:21 PM

Well masteryodafreak, did you report the family to the authorities?

No, i didn't think so. Perhaps because maybe that welfare family isn't just living off the government and selling drugs to geat ahead. You just assume because they are black (or hispanic) and they have money that they must be cheating the government to be doing better than you.

Also, how are you claiming that the government is taking 50% of your income? Because nowhere in the federal tax code does anyone get hit with that tax rate. Perhaps you are just full of hot air???

Posted by: Lordastral | October 14, 2008 2:22 PM

Lets see - the news is that Bush is Nationalizing the banks, that his spying has run amuk and an organization that helps to register voters got a few wrong but all the repukes focus on is the latter! Whats the problem, are you worried that if poor folks vote they won't support McShame - well, there's a surprise.

Ask McShame what his plans are if he wins - in FACT he doesn't have any. That means the same old folks in DC - the ones that are turning the country socialist and spying on us too. In other words, more of the same, and down the drain we all go while a few get richer!

For Gods sake, stop drinking the coolaid!

Posted by: Limey | October 14, 2008 2:22 PM

I wish everybody would calm down. Nobody is a socialist. The bank bailout is a global matter. The Europeans acted, and the train was leaving the station. If the US didn't get on board, the money would be leaving US banks. Japan bailed out its banks in the 90s, and it wishes it had done so sooner after they languished in recession almost the whole decade. Other, smaller countries have had similar episodes.

Posted by: bugbuster | October 14, 2008 2:23 PM

The thing that bothers me the most, is how little people value the Vote. rember people in Iraq risk their lives to vote, that sould show you how lucky we have it. If anbody is deliberally, mess with the voters out come is more serious than even murder. Because they are steeling all of our freedoms.the end result does not justife the means.

//do you really think that this going to happen?? When is the last time you got money from Government since your money was used to save a bank??///

I just got 600 dollars from the Governemnt, and so did you. The only money I lost was with Fanny and Freddy with the help of Franks and Obama.

Posted by: Phil | October 14, 2008 2:24 PM

I think there has been enough proof out there that Obama is not a Muslim that the entire issue should be closed. But suppose he was a Muslim, suppose he did believe in Allah. So what if he thinks that there is only one God and Mohammed is his profit. Does being a Muslim make you evil? Every Muslim I have met have been the nicest people I have ever met. Before using a religion to insult someone why not conduct a little research into the religion. Muslims, Christians, and Jews all believe in the SAME God. The Muslim faiths valued prophet Mohammed is a descendent of Abraham and his ancestors are also mentioned in the Old Testament as being blessed by God. Please go back to your scripture and re read the part where Leah’s handmaiden and her child are banished. That is where the Muslim faith comes from.
Just because there are a few radical members of the faith willing to hurt innocent people does not mean the entire faith is evil. Christians have had their own form of radicals. If the crusades are not enough for you than research how they dealt with so called pagans. Read how they tortured and murdered people that refused to convert to their faith. Or how about the English Witch hunts in Europe where the burned innocent people alive just because they practiced another religion. Or maybe Joan of Arc who was burned alive because of false claims of blasphemy.
Why should I care what faith Obama believes in. He Graduated in the top of his class from an Ivy league school. While McCain graduated bottom of his class in the navy and Sarah Palin jumped between multiple colleges while managing to get a D in macro Economics.
We need intellect and poise in charge of our country not mediocrity and chaos.

Posted by: MasterYodaFreak | October 14, 2008 2:26 PM

Jesus was a socialist . . . go ahead, read the gospels, especially the Beatitudes. Then rail on the socialists and then repudiate Christianity itself.

Posted by: Phil | October 14, 2008 2:30 PM

All you gullible folks, enough with this ACORN garbage.
Voter fraud is not the issue... there's very little, if any, voter fraud in this Country.
No falsely registered name, will be voting.
The only problem with ACORN, is its hiring practices. Some of the people they've hired, take the money, but don't do the work.

The GOP only brings this up, to try to intimidate poor voters, which are many of the voters ACORN registers. This is about Voter Suppression... not Voter Fraud.

It would truly be a terrible moment in our nation's history if McCain and Palin were to be elected on their platform of hate and lies. There was a time I had some respect for McCain. But he has completely lost my respect. In fact I must have been mistaken all along to think that he had any honor. If he becomes president I will still have no respect for him. But even worse if he becomes president it will show the world that the days of an inspiring America are over. If he becomes president the world will see that America is ruled by hate, fear and bigotry and that every other country had better be afraid because a hate filled, angry old man and his ill-informed religious fundamentalist vp will be in charge and they are erratic and filled with negativity. In fact negativity is their platform.

Gaias Child I liked this one
“you like capitalism?

you going to show god your big pile of gold when you get there and tell him how hard you worked not to share it?”

Reminds me of something else I have heard, How did that go……. Uh… "It is easier to fit a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven".

Or how about this one “ Go sell all that you have and follow me".

If socialism is so bad then why is Europe doing so much better than us in poverty rate, health care, and uh currency.

Socialism with democracy is not evil nor does it destroy freedom.

Posted by: MasterYodaFreak | October 14, 2008 2:34 PM

///Yes I did too. And I have to pay it back again in this year or next year. How they do it, the feds will reduce the standard deduction amounts than last year. ///

Oh don't worry. Obama won't raise your taxes unless you make 250K. (right!). The cash cow is business, which Obama will tax, regardless if cost jobs or not. You will not be able to watch unemployment numbers because high skills jobs will be replaced with low level government jobs that his administration wants to create. More government, more government jobs, more government slackers. Why do you think Congress approval ratings is 8%.

Posted by: Sue | October 14, 2008 2:37 PM

Wake up people! We're seeing only a tiny fraction of the big picture. Tens of thousands of volunteers and paid staff are working on these elections, with the vast majority doing an honest job on both sides. Of course, there will be the fanatical and dishonest few ON BOTH SIDES who bend and break the rules. Some get caught, some don't. I'd be willing to bet that the campaign headquarters have no clue what the majority of these (relatively few) troublemakers are doing ON BOTH SIDES. The most troubling accusations towards Acorn could easily have been about real problems, but they could also be due to deliberate sabotage from moles who were planted in the organization to discredit the group, or simply mismanagement. Never underestimate the potential for dirty tricks in these high-stakes campaigns. I'm more disturbed that people keep repeating stupid nonsense that was obviously PLANTED AS A DIRTY TRICK, even after the information has been officially corrected hundreds of times. A prime example is the claim that Obama is a Muslim. First of all, it's not true. Second --- so what? There are literally billions of Muslims in the world. Americans are obsessing about whether Obama is a Muslim, and the rest of the world is watching. How embarrassing!!! We've been exposed as a racist, hypocritical country. We talk about bringing democracy and fairness to the rest of the world, but too many Americans are OPENLY objecting (inaccurately) to electing a Muslim to public office. How do you think our allies in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan feel about that? Our opponents are probably having a field day, talking about how racist Americans are towards all Muslims. Great recruiting tool for our enemies.

Now I know why Republicans are associated with 6-pack rednecks, judgmental “holier than thou” bible-thumpers, and the brainwashed masses who can’t form an original thought if their lives depended on it.
HELLO love234america: Please learn to read. The article above just said Obama has NO (NONE NADA ZIP ZILTCH) ties what-so-ever to the Acorn group and never has. Yet McCain was Acorn’s keynote speaker at a 2006 rally. I love that you fokes make up your own facts as you go along - it is like creative writing class, only under the banner of true journalism. FoxNews would love you - maybe you should throw your application their way.

You flame Obama as anti-american? Let’s face reality and say what you really think - he is black and has a African name that sounds all scary to you mid-western shut-ins and southern fried morons, so you won’t even listen to the man. “He is a sleeper-cell Arab Terrorist! Oh my God, run!!” Give me a break.

Let’s face it - if he looked like JFK and had a name like “John Johnson”, we would be playing “hail to the chief” right now. Instead, we are going to vote in a man that is 73 years old, in poor health, and will likely kick it in the next 4 years. That leaves the nation with Palin who makes drilling Alaskan Wildlife and bombing another Muslim nation sound so “home-grown” and “Fargo-esque”. She has no idea what she is doing. According to her interview with Katie, she thinks Abortion should be a state decided issue and not National (without even thinking about the legal & social ramifications of dividing a nation over this critical issue) - and that is the only damage she was ALLOWED to do before McCain’s handlers could reel her back in and cushion her from the media. She has no idea how to be second in commend - let alone first. Only a blind person could not see that we would all suffer under such an administration. If we pass up a leader like Obama because we buy into these dirty politics, then we are truly doing ourselves a great injustice as a nation and should get what is coming to us. Can we learn nothing in 8 years of wars, poverty, and misery?

Posted by: Godhelpusall | October 14, 2008 2:39 PM

ThinkAboutIt - spoken like the true liberal that you are. Full of one liners, short on facts. Just because the Washington Post said Obama had nothing to do with Acorn certainly does not mean it is true. You need to do your own research.

Posted by: Sue | October 14, 2008 2:43 PM

Quite a grouping of comments here. It does seem as though both extremes are well represented. The facts are, however, that while ACORN may indeed do some good, if they violate the Federal Election Laws by registering people multiple times, then they must be shut down. The problem is if you treat them differently than anyone else, for example the OIL COMMODITIES TRADERS who conspired to raise the price of oil, then you are ignoring the rule of law. Who would you be then? CONGRESS!!!
Let's put aside our petty differences, we know that we are all tired of seeing people get away with violating the law, write your Senator or Congressmen, Like I have. Both DICK DURBIN and BARACK OBAMA.
Both of whom told me I was wrong, it wasn't against the law for the President to hold military people in when there wasn't a declaration of war. Or JOHN MCCAIN who said while it wasn't against the law, it was morally reprehensible to extend them.
I don't know who will win, they can't do worse than George, who I think is a good man, but stubborn as a rock, and nearly as smart...and didn't get my vote either time.

"Oh don't worry. Why do you think Congress approval ratings is 8%."

I don't give a damn who gets elected since all the governments had screwed us up all the time specially Bush & company and I guess McCain will too. He was with Bush and his policies all the time. Now he saying that he is going to change his policies?? If he wanted to he had 26 years for that. If you check the history, the country was doing great under democrats.

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 2:52 PM

Actually, Under Jimmy Carter, the last Democratic President before Bill Clinton, We actually had inflation and killer deregulation. I remember my dad, a die-hard, one pull(that means pull one lever straight ticket) Democrat told me that as a Truck Driver under Jimmy Carter, it was the only time in history that drivers had to take that big of a pay cut. From 80k to 20k with the stroke of a pen. That's a big OUCH!!
Under Ronald Reagan it was the go go 80's until the Internet bubble burst. Again, a lot of this we tend to bring on ourselves but we also like to forget the lessons of history.

Posted by: ApostolicIlx | October 14, 2008 3:04 PM

Something that we have to educate ourselves is that the US based economy is almost over. Now it's a global economy which means all the countries in the world contribute to the economy and consumes goods from all other countries. This is why we see when one country doing bad and almost the whole world gets effected. This is why we need a president with new ideas and the 21st century vision. In 21st century we have to compete with other countries than pretending that we are the world power. Almost every other country mind their own business and gain economically while we are going to war with other countries for someone else. I don't say that McCain is a bad person but he is not up for 21st century challenges. On the other hand, Obama is a new politician with more new ideas. This is the bitter truth.

LoL. The Republicans posting here have learned a new word..."socialist"...Oooohhhhh.

Has anyone else noticed how the Repubs have all of a sudden become the anti-socialist crowd?

This won't work...just as your failed policies and corrupt politics of the last 14 years have failed. People aren't buying Republican stupidity and fear mongering this time. We will hold all Republicans to account on Nov 4th. Good bye!

"What do yu expect out of the Washington Post. It is just a liberal rag sheet full of lies and ignores the truth. DO NOT BUY THE WASHINGTON POST and they will go out of business."

True ...stick to Fox news.

I give credit to the Republican ticket insofar as they haven’t cited guns, God, and terrorists as the priorities for the next four years. I like what Obama has to offer. In the next four years if the Dems can somehow prevent another Enron, another oil crisis, another housing bust, another war/country invasion, another Wall Street crisis then I think that we can all look back and say that yes, we increased the size and oversight of government, but, that the ends justified the means.

Considering that Obama paid ACORN $832,000 back in the spring, is Hillary sure that she did lose the nomination?

Posted by: MinniePearlJam | October 14, 2008 3:25 PM

Many posts here claims that Obama is socialist, (e.g. Posted by: Manolete | October 14, 2008 11:51 AM).
Let me start by asking do you know what "socialism" is? Why do you have to fear the idea of socialism? May be you are too rich to use those everydays' life socialism 'cause you can pay for them. But if you are not there will always be a socialist part of your life!!! And let me remind you some socialists life that you and your family have been enjoying:
(1) Police station: regardless of race, religion, or wealth you can request their services.
(2) Public Library: anyone does not need to pay to borrow books or educational material, or in some cities (e.g. Oakland, CA) places power tools
(3) Some Public School: how much do you pay for it?
(4) Public Park: you can stroll in without paying anything. Where do you think the money for maintaining those parks from?
(5) Last and not the least: the government (Bush's Administration) just bought many of the stocks and turn banks into federal owned (this is called nationalization) . This is happening in europe as well the difference is that in Europe the government(s) does not have a voting power, thus not real nationalization , but here in the USA the Bush administration has a voting power.
Tell me again, what is it that you fear about Socialism? You whatch too much MSNBC, FOX news, or CNN. Try to watch TV5 Monde, Deutch Welle, BBC, Russia Today, Pan Africa, JTV,...I guarantee you'll open up our narrow mind.

There should be an investigation to decide if Obama won the nomination by voter fraud!

Posted by: HillarySupporter | October 14, 2008 3:28 PM

Hats off to "open your mind!" posting. People should know what they are talking about.

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 3:30 PM

I think enough people are sick of the repubs hiding behind the ACORN cloak. Do some research before you start spewing off about voter fraud. Voter fraud is ONLY voter fraud when someone actually votes with the falsified name. Perhaps some of you making these false accusations haven't voted but every time I vote I am asked for identification. I highly doubt that some group claiming to be the entire Dallas Cowboys team is going to show up in Nevada to vote for Obama. Not to mention, Election Boards are required to confirm the identification of new registrants and will not send more than one absentee ballot to the same person at the same address, therefore, voter fraud is extremely rare in this country. Get the facts people.

Clearly, ACORN should have done a better job of checking the registrations they received from their contract employees but I'm sure they are understaffed and undertrained. Leave it to the Repubs to once again distort the truth.

I wish it were true Impartalreporter, that they were new idea's. Unfortunately, I do not see them that way. Take the investment in infrastructure for instance. Not that I have a problem with improving the roads. Lord knows they need it. However, this idea is not old, putting people to work in lower paying construction jobs is not what we need. Getting all of the construction jobs unionized is not something we could afford. Not without Nationalization...and I'm pretty sure we don't want to become the American NAZI party yet. Myself, I love the Teamsters, but they are one of the few that take care of their members. Maybe I jumped too far there. What I meant was, when the German Socialist Party came to power, infrastructure was one of their key components. In the US, we had the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps, to repair roads and other duties. When we have to resort to saying the best we can do is repair an old system of roads, we've lost the battle.
You want an alternative? I've got an idea for a vehicle that will run perfectly clean. Basically off air. Combine that with my idea for electrical generation and we're there. Step up to the real 21st century.

Posted by: ApostolicIlx | October 14, 2008 3:34 PM

Now the Hillary whiners start. You are just mad because that b**tch Hillary got slapped down. Obama will take care of McCain the same way he took care of that cow.

Posted by: Obama Man | October 14, 2008 3:34 PM

1. Why does the right complain that O's gonna tax "the rich who earned it?" How is running a company losing money "earning" those massive bonuses?

2. At least ACORN got called out for registration irregularities now rather than after the election. The effect canat least be minimized before the election. The people in FL in 2000 who weren't allowed to vote for bulls*** reasons didn't get their problem fixed ahead of time.

3. Why didn't the right complain about these problems in 2000? Why isn't the left complaining about this now? The voting day scene in "Gangs of New York" comes to mind.

4. At this point, lowering taxes doesn't help the economy. We need to balace the budget.

5. The trickle down effect doesn't work. Tax cuts to the rich go straight to the bottom line, executive bonuses, and stockholders.

6. If McC wants to "fix" Washington, well, isn't that synonymous with "making Washington ethical"? How does that make sense when you have a running mate that's been found to have acted unethically by an investigative probe?

7. They're both crooks, but O's the lesser of two evils.

Lordastral: I believe your comments were meant to be directed to piper not me. The poster’s name is at the bottom of the post not the top. But I completely understand your animosity to the hot button words used by Piper’s post. Not every family on Welfare is there because they don’t want to work. There are some people who have spent years looking for work only to be passed over by every employer they applied too. Not because they are unqualified but because there are more unemployed then there are jobs thanks to all those rich corporations sending our jobs over sees. There are also people on welfare because they have serious health issue preventing them from working. Those people who gave their sweat and blood so a rich man can get richer got hurt and can’t work anymore. Whatever the reason may be The rich man is not the one doing all the hard work the underpaid employee is doing all the hard work and without them the rich man would not have a product. I would like to see a rich man make all that money by producing the products themselves.

Posted by: MasterYodaFreak | October 14, 2008 3:36 PM

Hey Drew,

Do you really believe that raising taxes is going to do anything to balance the budget? There have been record revenues pouring into the federal government for the last 5 years. Did you see any of it applied to the debt?

Posted by: MinniePearlJam | October 14, 2008 3:41 PM

Isn't it a little late in the game to finally be researching Obama and his ties to groups and people. We could have used a little bit more hard hitting investigative work BEFORE this guy was shoved down our throats.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 14, 2008 3:45 PM

Acorn shmacorn. So we have some kids that are paid peanuts to register voters, and who are phonying up some names. Big deal. So fire them and move on. NOW, if you can show that there wasn't just voter registration fraud, but actual voter fraud-then you have a complaint. Personally, I think actual voter fraud should carry mandatory sentencing of 10 years in prison. However, this isn't a voter fraud issue at all-just another shiny object to distract the eminently distractible con-victims. And you know what? It will work. Luckily though, the suckers of our society are being subsumed. They are as gullible as ever, and as such, easy prey for the smear merchants, but they just don't matter anymore.

I still remember that Charlie Rose interviewed Indian PM during his visit to UN assembly. Charlie Rose asked from Indian PM "What are you going to do about the military governments in Burma and Cambodia as a regional power?" He had a great answer, He said that "It should be the people in those countries who should decide what kind of government they need, not me. If those people are ok with it, why we, India should do anything". It's a small answer, but has a deep meaning.

Posted by: Impartalreporter | October 14, 2008 3:53 PM

Hilary went bankrupt she doesn’t have the financial intelligence to run the country.

Posted by: MasterYodaFreak | October 14, 2008 3:54 PM

Boy McCain sure is a chump. He trashes Obama for working with ACORN then a picture pops up of McCain working with the same group. Obama represents ACORN in a law suit against the Justice Department and that moron Rick Davis from the McCain campaign goes after Obama with he was standing “against the State of Illinois and the federal government.” These morons are trying to make ACORN out to be some Nazi training camp run by Obama. And how do you have voter fraud if no one voted yet. Those knuckle-heads are getting paid by what they produce so their making up names to make more money. Who cares, it don't affect the election. And to top it all off McCain wants Obama to "reel" in ACORN's corrupt doings. Maybe John McCain should worry about BUSH and his corrupt voting machines that cost the American people two elections in a row.

Posted by: Hemi | October 14, 2008 5:01 PM

FOX news is on the war path again. It seems they found some people wearing naughty T-Shirts. WOooo! Here we go with Obama and his sexist campaign again. Are these people for real? Their making fools of themselves. You can tell a lot of people on the Republican side are becoming real desperate. Now all we need is for George Bush to cancel the election and become the Dictator of America.

Posted by: Hemi | October 14, 2008 5:45 PM

Obama is a socialist? What do you call someone who takes over every branch of government in a democracy and defies all the rules saying he has his own and he doesn't have to follow the rules set for 200 years ago by this country's founding fathers? If that was a democrat doing those things he would never have won a second term, but since a Republican did that, it's okay not to follow the rules set for in the Constitution. What do you call it when the government takes over the banks in the country? And now, you think it's alright to have the same people manage your retirement? Your point of view wouldn't be so bad, if you used some reason to come to your conclusions. Any American who thinks Bush is like them, hasn't really done the simple research to find out from where he really comes. Do you think he had to work when he was a kid to buy a car? Do you think he really knows what it's like to have to fill up every week and your gas bill is going up by 10 bucks a week? Do you think he knows what it's like to worry that you can't afford to be sick? He has never had to work for anything in his life and he doesn't come from a ranch in Texas, he's from Maine. How many businesses have you had the opportunity to run into the ground? Look at W, he's had plenty of practice. Who of us out here in America has that kind of money to just throw away? If you call Obama un-american, then you have to call the Bush's un-american too. They traded with the Germans, before, during and after the war. They only stopped trading with them, when the US Gov't passed a law the prohibited trading with enemies. For once, the Bush's had to follow the rules. The Palins belong to a group, or did until it was decided very recently that carrying that card wouldn't look good on their resumes, whose founder is quoted as saying "I've got not use for America or her damned institutions". If Obama un-american because he wasn't even born here, then you must apply the same rules to McCain, who wasn't born here either. But, if you don't want to apply the same rules to everyone, tnen don't complain when others on the field decide not to play by the rules either.
