Video: Blagojevich Impeachment Trial Begins
The state impeachment trial of embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich began this afternoon while the governor continued his media tour along the East Coast.
Illinois House Prosecutor David Ellis said the evidence presented over the days-long trial would show "the pattern of abuse of power by this governor."
"The governor has betrayed the public trust. He has violated his constitutional oath. He is no longer fit to govern. He should be removed from office," Ellis said.
Blagojevich, 52, has been charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery as part of a far-reaching public corruption case. He has refused to resign and has called the impeachment trial in Springfield, Ill., "fixed" and "rigged" by his critics.
