A Lovesick Mayor And His 'Teenage Fantasy'
— online chat by Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick: More Kilpatrick Messages Released
More text messages and e-mails to and from former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick were released today, showing the extent of the first "Hip Hop Mayor's" relationship with a former aide.
Kilpatrick spent four months in a county jail last year after he was convicted of lying under oath to hide an affair with his chief of staff.
He pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice Sept. 4 after The Detroit Free Press published dozens of sometimes-racy text messages between Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty.
About 1,400 text messages were made public today, ranging from teenage-esque puppy love ("Love you, too. All of you. Mostly your spirit and soul. Its beautiful! The outside aint so bad either!" Kilpatrick writes) to more serious topics of love ("I heard something on the radio that made me think about why we never tried to be together post college," Beatty wrote).
Their relationship apparently started after the pair left college in the 1990s.
Beatty wrote to Kilpatrick on July 23, 2002 after they left school: "Yes I thought about it when I first came home from school and saw you a few times, right around the time we first had sex and shortly after that you were engaged. After that, I thought we would never have opportunity to be together an didn't seriously think about it."
Beatty wrote again to Kilpatrick a few moments later: "Did you consider how I may have felt about you or if (sic) was any different or deeper for that matter. Or had you already decided that you were going to get married?"
Kilpatrick replied: "I REALLY BELIEVED THAT I HAD NO CHANCE TO BE WITH YOU. I've WANTED TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU SINCE I WAS 17yrs OLD. I BELIEVED IT WAS MY ONLY OPPORTNITY (SIC). AT THAT TIME I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A TEENAGE FANTASY COME TRUE! NOW I KNOW DIFFERENT."
