Wiz keep it going, on to Charlotte
Lord, I hope it's not snowing in Charlotte....Nice win tonight over the Grizzlies. It's amazing the difference a month can make because it was the night of Nov. 24 that I walked out of Fed Ex Forum in Memphis wondering how in the world the Wizards were going to dig their way out of their hole.
They were awful that night: Gil went 1-for-12 and scored three points, they shot 40 percent and scored season-low 80 points. Flash ahead to tonight and everything was different. Gil was on - again - and the whole offense was flowing. All five starters hit double figures and even though it got tight in the fourth, the Grizzlies never seriously threatened.
One issue: that bench. Without Etan and Ruffin, this is a thin team. Dangerously thin. If any of the Big 3 go down......(I'm not jinxing, I'm just doing my journalistic duty)....Eddie obviously doesn't trust Lang, Blatche, Booth, Taylor or Mason so he's going to roll with those main seven and hope that Etan, Ruff and eventually Songaila get back. Darius isn't going to be back until after the All Star break at the earliest. Right now, he's limited to work on a low-impact treadmill (trust me, it's new technology and all of that).
Haywood on going 11-4 since losing at Memphis: "We go as Gilbert goes. I told him that we have to ride him. If he's off, we're off. When he's on we're on." That about sums it all up right there.
Caron on his lack of All Star love: "As long as we keep winning, we'll all get our due, myself, Antawn, everybody."
Notice the "Antawn?" That's Caron's way of keeping the lockeroom tight. No fighthing over No. 2 status behind Gilbert. Both he and Antawn are a pros's pro. No knuckleheadness. No dumb stuff. That's yet another reason why getting Butler for Kwame Brown is like getting a new BMW for that old beat up Ford Escort wagon I drove in high school (Though I did have Too Short bumpin' on a consistent basis and that made it work)
Going to get some rest and catch that flight to Charlotte in the morning. Holla.
