Players That Need To Get Dealt
I know that trusted readers of this blog spent a good portion of the season coming up with trades to ship Antawn Jamison out of town - a round of speculation perhaps sparked by a column I wrote last season, after it appeared Kevin Garnett had reached his boiling point in Minnesota (forgive me). But now we are beginning to realize that despite being 30 years old, an undersized forward and a less-than-mediocre defender, his leadership makes him a keeper. Can we agree on that? Anyhow, the NBA trade deadline is in one week, and I wanted to offer up a list of players I'd like to see traded. That's different than players most likely to be traded, but players I'd like to see traded because A) I'm sick of hearing their names mentioned in trade rumors, B) I'm sick of seeing them stuck with terrible teams, C) they've already asked out and there really is no need to hold on to them and D) what the heck? Let's shake things up a bit.
1. Kevin Garnett
Now that Allen Iverson has already been shipped to Denver, taking away one of the few superstars the Eastern Conference had to offer, Garnett is the player that everyone is hoping will get moved soon. I respect his loyalty to the team that drafted him and his desire to blah blah blah, but c'mon. Don't you want to win? It's not going to happen with the Timberwolves, who have gone 4-7 since Kevin McHale decided to save the season and fire Dwane Casey. He can opt out of his contract after next season, but really is about time that left Minnesota.
Teams he'd look great with: Chicago, New Jersey, Los Angeles Lakers.
2. Paul Pierce
What's the deal with former Celtics players holding star players hostage and wasting their prime years, while they screw up everything around them? McHale has been messing with Garnett for what seems like forever. Now Danny Ainge is doing the same thing to Pierce. What has Pierce done to deserve this? He is 29 and surrounded by a college all-star team. I understand why he's taking his time to rehab that foot. Eighteen straight losses and counting? I wouldn't want to suit up for the Cs, either. He needs to get some help or go somewhere where people can appreciate how good he is.
Teams he'd look great with: Chicago, Los Angeles Clippers, Orlando.
3. Corey Maggette
I could care less if Maggette played out his entire career with the Clippers or not, but I'm really tired of reading about him everyday. What has he done to warrant so much attention? He has asked to be traded. Coach Mike Dunleavy and mostly everyone in the front office wants him out of town. What's the problem? He's owner Donald Sterling's favorite player - ugh. Get rid of him, already. That way, we will only hear about him when he has a good game.
Teams he'd look great with: San Antonio, Miami, Golden State, Indiana.
4. Jason Kidd
He's done all he can do for the New Jersey Nets. He won't be taking them back to the NBA Finals again. He's 34. And, he is supposed to make $40 million over the next two years. Kidd has always been fun to watch and he's still one of the top five point guards in the league but his excellence is being lost in the swamplands. The Nets are horribly disappointing and it's time to start over. So, let's set Kidd free. Find a taker, any taker, and move on.
Teams he'd look great with: Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland.
5. Pau Gasol
The Grizzlies are terrible and he's done his time. He spent the first three years of his career padding his numbers while helping the Grizzlies get nice lottery picks, then Memphis went to the playoffs three years in a row and came away with zero wins in the postseason. Now they've sunk back into total murkiness. The owner is trying like crazy to sell but can't find a legitimate buyer. Who knew that a team run by Jerry West could be such a mess? He discretely asked out, and then had his business plastered all over the place. The Logo needs to find this man a new home. It's not like the folks in Memphis will miss him.
Teams he'd look great with: Chicago, New Jersey, Boston
6. Ron Artest
Can we have him back in the Eastern Conference? Now that he is Sacramento, Artest's antics don't get noticed nearly enough. Did you remember that he already released a hip-hop album that was outsold by the former Mr. Britney Spears, Kevin Federline? Did you see him when he sported that Mohawk? Did you know that he has already feuded this season with teammates Mike Bibby and Corliss Williamson? Have you heard his prediction that the Kings will return the playoffs despite their sluggish start? You probably said no to at least three of those. Granted, Bibby is the player the Kings are most likely to move and Gilbert Arenas has taken the personality crown in the East, but if the entire conference is going to be this bad, can't we at least be entertained?
Teams he'd look great with: New York, Miami, Orlando
What's your list?

Considering both centers for the Wiz are under sized, because their really fowards.
Do you think Coach Jordan would consider trading the two trade for Kevin Garnet.
With Kevin Garnet you would sure up the inside for offense. Add that to the mix
when Jamison returns your offense is even more potent.

You're forgetting they all would look great with the Wizards.
Maybe they can trade Etan Thomas and Antawn Jamison for all 6 of them!

That's crazy talk. Make it Etan and future considerations for all 6 and I'm on board.

Not for the Wizards but how about Ray Allen. The Sonics look like they are in the middle of a very long rebuilding project.
For the Wizards: I was thinking about Joel Pryzbilla as a replacement for Etan, but then I looked at his stats this year and they are awful.

I agree on KG, Gasol, and, to a degree, Pierce. But, I'd also add Ray Allen to the list. Yes, he's got some miles on him, but, he's earned the right to play for something other than a 1st round KO in the playoffs, if that. Package Ray Allen and some bench fodder to the Cavs for Eric Snow and their bench fodder, and let LeBron have Allen to dish off to when in trouble. Make the salary numbers work. But do it.

I've been saying (to myself) that the Wizards should make a move to get Gasol. I don't know what we'd trade for him, but he's definitely big, has experience playing with a winning team in Spain and could score. Let's skip all the fantasy KG trades and start up some fantasy PG trades.

Doc, you are correct to dream about Childress. I think he would be great in the Wizards' system. Don't know how you could get him, though.
I think the main reason Garnett hasn't been dealt, even though it's obvious that Minnesota has to start over with young talent and high picks to build a good team, is that with Garnett around, it seems Minnesota always has a chance to get into the playoffs. Maybe that's all the owner wants, and so Garnett covers a lot of ills on that team. In other words, Garnett is McHale's no-firing insurance. Wes was GM of the century compared to McHale, but with Garnett around, thinks don't look THAT bad and McHale continues to collect paychecks.

i would still trade away jamison. i love the guy's attitude and intangibles, and this year his outside shot has finally really staid consistent...but we need more on our team, and he's the best asset we have to give away -- a 30yr old forward with 1 year left at 16 mil. blatche can develope and fill jamison's role, but we still have nothing on the inside. trading jamison for gasol or kg or even randolph & change is a great long-term move for us. heck maybe even the clippers would give up brand if we helped them reduce their overall salary...

i read that knicks are considering frye for gooden (though i have no clue why the cavs would do that)...why not offer them thomas and hayes for frye and richardson. they get a big man who is better suited defending pf and a young guy who's a shooter, but more importantly, they reduce their salary and get rich of a large long-term contract in richardson. frye fits our style of play, richardson would be great off the bench, and we'd have more tradable assets.

LOL. Never read so much garbage in one place. "This guy deserves that, and that guy deserves this, yada, yada..." They don't deserve anything they are not getting, they are overpaid as it is. LOL. I will bet most of you morons can not afford a good seat to watch them. But hey, thanks for keep them off the streets ... LOL.

I like mike's list. The only person he left off was Ray Allen. I think if Ray went to Orlando, they'd be my pick to make it to the Finals next year.

Here is one for the trading block close to home...
Jarvis Hayes!!!
I love the guy, he is a genuinely nice guy...too nice! I am just tired of the Jarvis experiment. I get so incensed watching and listening to Buckhantz and Chenier say over and over when Jarvis hits a shot, "that is great to see"!!! Its like some anomaly for him to hit a shot or two. Actually it is. That is the problem. Its been what, three or four years now, and yes, he has been hurt but...come on we deserved more from a first round pick!

Garnett without a doubt.
EG is a good GM but I don't see him making a trade unless he gets the advantage, lol!

love how everyone wants to get garnett or gasol for a bunch of beans. did someone actually say we should think of giving up thomas and haywood for garnett? do you think minesota is honestly that stupid?
would have been nice for the wiz to make a move for c wilcox last offseason--big, athletic, runs the floor, just enough post game to help this team without dominating the ball--if seattle is a mess.....

Thank God the Wizards beat Philly! Congrats to EJ for reading my posts and listening to me, and limiting Andre "boo hoo cry me a river I got shot talk to the soldiers in Iraq" Blatche playing time. Thanks for listening to my posts and ignoring all these delusions of gradeur that he's ready to have sig playin time on an nba team.
But compliments aside, today was the first time I began to question EJ's substitution moves, and mainly it had to do w/ the last 8-9 minutes in the 4th quarter.
The worst mistake a coach can make is to substitute OUT a guy who's hot. So why the hell did he take out Songaila when he was ballin w/ 12 points, and with the Wizards getting the biggest lead of the game. Immediately after the substitution the 10 point lead dwindled down to freakin 3 points and we almost lost the game.
Never take out a player who's on fire, that's something you can pick up in Basketball Coaching for Dummies. Other than that kudos to Darius Songaila who proved his worth today, you see people this is what I mean by taking advantage of opportunities, you go in and score 12 points grab boards, and play solid D.
This is what the wizards need in AJ's absence, not some doofus kid who needs a year to recover from a gunshot wound. Look at Songaila, hes been out 45 games he didnt go to no nba training camps this year, and he was even out the last 20 games of last year and he comes in and steps it up big time. Good job you proved me wrong.

The wizards poor play of late is due to mre thansimply the absence of antawn jamison.. granted tawn being out is huge and no one (jarvis, blatche, booth) has sufficiently stepped in. However, the larger issue seems to be that the remaining Big Two - gilbert and caron - are both in the midst of terrible shooting slumps. i'd have to check the stats but i don't think either has had a good shooting game since before the Lakers came in town. they need to get back on track. the blame has fallen on hayes, blatche, etc. but with jamison out the only remaining legit scorers have compounded the problem with an extended slump.
also:
Boswells column yesterday should be required All Star Break reading for haywood and Etan.
it is a very good thing that Ernie steered clear of Wilcox ths past off season. they would have over paid to bring him in. he is inconsistant and seems to take nights off on a regular basis. he routinely bails the other team out with lazt fouls. he turned it on down the stretch last year to make himself some cash.
nice flashes from songaila last night, hopefully he keeps it up.
ditto for blatche. i disagree with previous posting from a blatche hater. he is what, 20? for a second round pick, out of high school, who endured some serious adversity (yes, gun shot wounds) out of the gate i think he's doing well and i root for the kid.
is it possible to get any value for jarvis in a trade?
stevenson has to be the best player dollar for dollar in the league this season. a steal by ernie. i hope they can hold on to him w/out overpaying.

I agree with most of what you've said, Pepcoenergy3, but I think that Boswell's column contains a fair amount of exaggeration. As a result, I think that both BH and ET will ignore it figuring that Boswell doesn't know what he's talking about.
Wilcox isn't the kind of versatile player that EG and EJ look for. They aren't big on one-trick ponies, except for a useful role-player like a Mike Ruffin. I think that letting Jared go to the Knicks was another example of letting a one-trick pony go and replacing him with a more versatile player in DSong.

I'd like to see Josh Childress accidentally find himself in a Zards uni. We've got Bigs in the pipeline and developing, but I want some quality depth, scoring, and back-up for the shooter's spot.
Okay, it's not likely-- I just liked him as a replacement for Hughes (nice all-court game. Ugly outside shot, but good rebounding numbers, good size for a guard, decent handles, nice length and ups).
