Nick Young is the pick
Ernie Grunfeld was beaming when he met with us a short while ago in the VC media room to discuss the selection of USC SG Nick Young with the 16th pick. Obviously, the Wizards had Young rated high after he worked out for them here back on June but I don't think they ever thought that he'd be sitting there for them tonight. A couple of things happened to set the table for Young: Philly went big with Thaddeus Young at 12, New Orleans passed on Nick Young to go big with Julian Wright, the Clippers passed on a need-area at guard to take a big man in Al Thornton and the Pistons stuck with SG Rodney Stuckey as expected at 15.
The book on Young is that he's a superb athlete who can score off the dribble or on catch-and-shoots, has range that easily extends to the NBA 3-point line and can do his thing in the open floor. The question marks are about his build - he's almost Kevin Martin skinny - and he's not a great defender. What else is new on this team? That said, the Wiz really needed a scorer off that bench.
Wait, this blog entry has interrupted by a text message from none other than Gilbert Arenas, who informs me that Young used to play for Gil Sr's AAU team as a younger cat in Los Angeles
. "He is gonna help our bench out a lot," the text reads. So, that's where Gilbert weighs in. Gotta go work but I'll check back later.
