Time to "Vacate"

Checking in before I get ready to "vacate" as Gilbert would say. I have being going steady since the season ended covering the playoffs, the finals, the pre-draft camp in Orlando, the draft, summer league in Las Vegas, free agency and most recently, police reports.
It's time to read some books, play a ton of basketball, talk long walks and hikes with my dog (we won't be visiting Bad News Kennels) and check out some football games all over the country. I'll be refreshed and ready to roll for what is going to be a wild season when I get back. Take care.

Have a blast Ivan. :)

Saw you on Washington post Live the other day. Glad you mentioned the Redskins o-line having issues. Seems everyone except the organization realizes that they needed help.

Blog to you when you get back.

Hey you all see on the Wizards website where Calvin Booth and Roger Mason were representing the Wizards at some basketball clinic in Ireland? Does that mean they are still on the team and will be in camp? It sure makes it sound that way.

Posted by: Darnell | August 24, 2007 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Ivan
I have only been recently reading your blogs, but have thoroughly enjoyed them. Thank you for all your efforts, you really make a huge difference on the stoggie old WPost sports beat team.

One thing before you fly off, tell Ernie he needs to make two moves:
1) pick up Dan Dickau -- he has got a lot of potential as a strong back-up to Gilbert, and would be a good change of pace guy for the second squad.
2) trade AD to Minnesota for Juan Howard. I know, I know...but he would be a reliable reserve veteran along the front line, which we currently do not have.

Enjoy the well deserved vacation, Ivan. Let's hope the Zards can stay off of the police blotter while you are gone. We'd hate for you to miss out on the action! This is going to be a crazy season so you will need to get rested up for it. So many stories that will need to be followed.

Can't wait for training camp to start. Sounds crazy but I am thinking that this could be a 50+ win season if we stay healthy and make good decisions.

NOOOOO, dont go...well, ok go, but that means you must come back stronger and better then ever, cause we are still a long way from the season and you need to provide us with wisdom and perspective on our favorite les boulles like no one else does. We will all miss you.
How long is this vacation by the way? not more then few weeks is it?

U the best.........

Oddjob, that is an awesome reccommendation for Ernie. I think Juwaan would fit very well at this stage of his career and he wants out from Minn with Garnett gone. Why not finish his career where it started. Hey Ivan, great work, enjoy the vacation!

Posted by: Garry | August 25, 2007 10:43 AM | Report abuse

Bringing Juwan back here when you have Pech, Song and AB all vying for time at the 4, with AJ starting, would not be a good move.

I keep saying this, but AD would be good veteran to have on the floor at PG if EJ decides to have the youngsters Pech, McGuire and Young on the floor at the same time backing up the starters.

I don't see EG making this trade.

Ivan, enjoy the time off, boy you did manage to avoid that Randy Ayers question for weeks. The silence speaks volumes, I know you've got to stay on good terms with all involved, no use in getting yourself froze out from either Ernie or Eddie.
Maybe by the time you get back and Camp is ready to open everything will sort itself out in the new front office(player development guys) and coaching hire(Ayers) and you'll have an idea whose doing what.
I'd have to assume by lack of comment that's all still being worked out as we speak, good time to take a vacation...

I just agreed to terms with the Boston Celtics.

Posted by: James Posey | August 25, 2007 4:21 PM | Report abuse

The Wizards website refers to "Wizard's center" Calvin Booth and "Wizard's guard" Roger Mason. I assume from that they will both at least be at camp.

That would be 16 players at least. If it comes down to Mason or Taylor I hope we keep Mason. He has shown the ability to come in cold off the bench and immediately make shots, plays good D, and can play both guard spots and probably even runs the point better than Taylor actually. And he'd be good insurance at SG as another option to the rookie Young.

I like Hall as 3rd SF, and Booth as 3rd Center. The problem though is I'd really like to add another point. I don't see either Taylor or Mason as a real pg. I'd love to pickup someone like Taurean Green, Zabian Dowdell, Gerald Fitch, or even Brian Chase to be a 3rd pg behind Gil and AD. That means someone would have to go. I really like Booth, but I think Blatche could replace him as that 3rd center.

Haywood, Etan, Blatche
Jamison, Songaila, Pecherov
Butler, McGuire, Hall
Stevenson, Young, Mason
Arenas, Daniels, 3rd PG (Chase?)

Looking at that final roster spot who do you all want to keep?

Hall, Mason, Booth, Taylor, Chase?

Ivan, Thanks for everything - enjoy man!

Sorry Wiz43 - & Darnell - Been around long, long time. Old DC resident & Fan. Don't agree with comments bout keepin Mason. Trust me. Jersey, Sac passed on him as pg and combo-guard...that alone tells you something..Those teams were DESPERATE!!
Gave him considerable consideration and PASSED. Wiz should do same. word is he's got pers connx w/ EJ..so who knows..

Wizards now have a pretty decent team why screw it up keepin sub par players because of personal contacts. Should be best man for job.

Booth's height is always needed.

Ivan...appreciate the coverage on the blog and post...recharge the batteries for the upcoming Wiz season...Peace.

Posted by: Fitz | August 26, 2007 8:16 AM | Report abuse

Darnell, As little as a third point is normally needed there's always the tendency to lean toward a combo guard that can do a little of everything.
There a guy like Mason seems to get the nod, he's shown an ability to play a little point and he can defend well enough to play some 2, or even 3 if the matchup calls for a small quick guy at forward or we want to spread the floor with a shooter. Mason can hit the three, and given consistant minutes could be develop into a decent shooter off the bench.
But the guys that seem to give the Wizards fits are the Earl Boykins type players. Daniels doesn't match up with them any better than Arenas can defend those little nats. Having a small, quick, point that can defend that kind of player could well be a handy player to have around as a 13th to 15th guy on the bench. Not a guy that would be active every game but one that could be used as a specialist against teams that have that kind of threat at point. If Chase could be that kind of guy he could carve out a niche for himself with the team.
I like Hall and his hustle and effort, when he's in the game at garbage time he's trying to play the game as it's supposed to, not put up stats in the box score. But he does seem to be the odd man out on the active roster, with McGuire coming in at the three Jordan is going to have to carve out PT for the rookie. Hall in the end might be what they refer to a AAAA player in baseball, to good for the D-league but not a rotation player in the NBA. But you've got to love his work effort and dedication to the game, in the end the kind of guy every coach hates to cut.
Having a vet that can defend and shoot that's 6'11" on the bench is always a plus. The other nice thing about Booth is his work ethic, not a guy that needs a ton of court time to stay prepared. When we face Shaq it's always nice to have an extra big active that night, and Etan has a history of injuries so having an extra big around can't hurt. Since he already knows the system, which is hard for bigs to pick up, it just makes good sense to keep him around if we can. Not any upside with Booth, he is what he is, and he isn't gettin any quicker with age, so sooner or later he'll get to slow to defend at all.
With Taylor's size, length, and quickness he flashes more ability than any of the other players at the end of the bench. At times you wonder why this guy isn't playing alot more, I think Eddie has hurt his development by not sending him out to D-league to play regularly last year when he was still eligible and we'd retained his rights. He really needs regular playing time to work on his game that he's not getting at the end of the bench. But in the end he's been too inconsistant to rely on, he'll make a great play and then turn the ball over or get burned on defense. He's a guy that we could let go and then he'd suddenly bloom somewhere else and in a few years people would be complaining about another guy that got away. But I wonder if he'll ever get better at the end of the bench, if only he had Hall's work ethic.
The best thing about this situation is having five guys battling for two roster spots. Competition in Camp and the Preseason should only make for a better team in the end. Of the five I think Booth has the Edge for one of the spots because veteran bigs are just harder to find than gaurds or small forwards.
Of the other four guys, I think one's going to have to come to camp and seperate himself from the rest to claim a spot. If one of them doesn't I'd think Jordan would lean toward Mason because of his three point shooting range. I'm not saying he's it, but one thing this roster lacks is a dead eye spot up three guy that can come off the bench and burn a team if they don't pick him up at the three line. Guys like that can find a place for themselve's on alot of teams even if their game has many other limitations.
Hall, Chase or Taylor don't seem to have that it their games at all. So in the end it could be what gives Mason an edge for the last spot on the bench.

Posted by: GM | August 26, 2007 9:51 AM | Report abuse

I have posted before that I don't mind having Booth on the roster for reasons stated above. However, having Pech on the roster now kind of takes his place. And with a healthy Song and a hopefully improving AB, I do not know if we need another big.

It would be nice to have a spot up three point shooter and the Wiz have tried to get that in the past, but it has not worked out. Mason does not seem glaringly good or bad at this point, but maybe he is the best we can do right now for this part of the roster.

Yo Ivan. Have a nice vacation and we will see you in October. I am now in "football mode" so I can live without this blog until the season starts.

Have a safe trip and enjoy yourself. You deserve it big time.......

For a team that is regarded to be an offensive team, last year at times we had a glaring lack of shooters on the floor.
And even fewer guys that could get their own shot if closely gaurded. There will be more offense available off the bench this year, but that last roster spot could go to a shooter. Could be someone that's not even going to camp with the team.

3st!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 26, 2007 2:44 PM | Report abuse

GM, good breakdown of the guys.

I agree, I mean the top 12 are set, it's those final 3 spots at the end of the bench that are up in the air. Usually inactive unless there's an injury, but guys that can make a difference at some point in the season.

I too am leaning toward Booth as one to keep. He's a vet, can come in when needed and knows what to do. Etan has a history of injuries as you pointed out, so Booth would be nice insurance to have. Good work ethic, good locker room guy, and willing to play defense.

I'd really like to keep Hall too. Local guy, great work ethic, plays hard, has an all around game and does the little things to win, and a smart and funny guy that's also good for the locker room. He's a type that will lay it all on the line for you and not take anything for granted. I like him as a 3rd SF too because his game reminds me of a poor man's Caron Butler.

That last spot... seems to come down to Taylor, Mason, or Chase. 2 combo guards and a point. You are right when you mention those little pgs always seem to kill us, and we don't have an answer for them. Chase could provide that for us. Taylor is the most athletic of the group, and has the most upside. He has shown some nice ability and hustle. I think the nod probably goes to Mason because of his ability to hit the 3, play good defense, and the versatility to play both guard spots.

Another option is to keep this spot open. Alot of good players are going to get squeezed out due to numbers and cut by other teams. I think it would be wise to keep a spot to pick up someone else, maybe someone like Ivan's boy Taurean Green.

Posted by: Darnell | August 26, 2007 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Just As A Thought...lol

Does anyone think we can make a 3-team trade...including, Wiz, Cavs, Kings..
The Cavs have been trying to get Mike Bibby and i think that the Wiz wouldnt mind a sign and trade deal that would bring Anderson Varajao here...but what can the Kings recieve???...Maybe the Wiz Horribly protected pick and other stuff...most likely a Wiz and Cav player to make it work money wise

Posted by: Fulvio | August 26, 2007 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Good Thought Darnell...Taureen Green could give us some defense..is there anyway that DJ Strawberry gets cut

Posted by: Fulvio | August 26, 2007 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Trade:

Kings Get:

-Antoinio Daniels
-Eric Snow
-Cleveland 2nd Rounder

Cavs Get:

-Mike Bibby
-Wiz Horribly Protected Pick

Wiz Get:

-Damon Jones
-Anderson Varejao

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=61~406~796~183&teams=5~27~23~23&te=&cash=

all you have to do is add Anderson Varejao to that deal al though i dont hink we would make more than 2mil making the deal work...

Honestly i think the deal wouldnt work but ...there are tons of ther ideas i believe

Any Suggestions?

Concerning earlier comments on the last roster spot- I've never heard that Mason had connects with Jordan. But if you're assuming that all things are equal basketball wise and what we're talking about are the end of the bench spots anyway, what he does have are DC connections and he seems to be a good guy. When you've got Blatche with the hooker and the recent shooting, that's not a small thing if all other things are equal. From what I've heard he's a nice and smart fellow, good family, etc.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 26, 2007 10:55 PM | Report abuse

Anon poster - you must be his mom..

But I can see where Wiz is comin from.

We don't win games cuz they got nice familiesetc. its about putting together a efficient, proficient professional team

Nothin personal - just about business.

We've spent many years bein bad to mediocre
Grunfeld is steppin up our selections for once..I say keep the selections competitive.

Posted by: Tank | August 27, 2007 12:13 AM | Report abuse

Agreed Tim and Darnell. Lets exercise our options..Taurean Green does play D. We desperarely need it. Who knows..maybe the addition of Tapscott and was it Ayers?"
We just might see some defense this year.

Fellas - I really think we got a good team this year. Jamison, Butler, Arenas, Pech,Stevenson, Song, Haywood, Thomas and Daniels with the two new players filling in plus pimp daddy "Dre" That still leaves McGuire,Young Booth for height.

Nice roster..
