Game update

It's halftime here at the Patriot Center and it's tied 42-42. Dallas is playing without several key players including Dirk Nowitzki, Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier, Jason Terry and Devean George. The Wizards started the normal five and have everyone available.

Brendan Haywood, who was matched up against DeSagana Diop, had a strong first half with 10 points on three of five shooting with three rebounds. He was also active defensively. Didn't have a block but had a couple of what I call distractions, helped well on the pick-and-roll and hustled back to protect the rim. Gilbert Arenas continues to work on finding his shot. He's 1 of 8 overall and 0 of 3 from long range but did drive draw some fouls to get four points on free throws.

Andray Blatche entered late in the first quarter and has been active. He has four points and five rebounds. He should have at least one block but hasn't been credited with one. Like Haywood, he's been active defensively, defending his man but also playing good help defense and coming up with weakside rebounds.

I'm sitting right next to the Wiz bench and thus have been able to pick up on some chatter. On nearly every defensive possession (the Wiz played defense in front of their own bench in the first half) Asst. Coach Randy Ayers can be heard shouting instructions. "Where's the ball Antawn? Where's the ball? " "Sag back in Darius, see the ball!" "In the paint Brendan, in the paint!" "Recover Nick, recover! Where's the ball?" Like Tuesday's win at Cleveland, the Wiz are hustling, rotating pretty well and showing active hands.

Dallas shot 46.7 percent but turned it over 10 times.

Hilarious. "AJ where's the ball?" AJ is too busy thinking about what he will do on the offensive end.

For Gilby, it's strange that his shot is way off. He was bragging about how many shots he took in the offseason, how good he was at Barry Farms, etc.

Let's hope he's not getting tendinitis or carpal tunnel syndrome from playing too many video games.

Looks like Andray may pan out after all.

We already know what the big 3 can do. And we got a good idea about Songaila and Daniels. This preseason is about seeing what we get from Haywood, Blathce, Pesh, McGuire and Young. So far the news about Haywood and Blatche seems to be especially good.

One game is only one game, but so much for all of the posters who were calling for Donnell Taylor to be cut after the Cleveland game....

Can't go into the season with assumptions. Everybody is one year older, and people can lose steps, lose elevation, and lose shots easily. Case in point Marbury, Steve Francis, Allan Houston, etc.

Preseason is about seeing what the players can do as a team, not as individual players. And, a big focus is team and individual defense, which none of the big 3 can do except for Caron.

I wouldn't worry too much about Gil's or any one of the Big Three's shot being off. We do know what they can do already. This preseason gives the Wiz brass a chance to evaluate the Bench Mob and see what type of 2nd unit rotation is most effective. And so far, the bench is looking good! Good point Darnell. For some reason I thought Comcast was going to show all of the preseason games. At least tomorrow's game is televised. I want a chance to check out the bench again. Can't wait for the Nov 3rd home opener.

Arenas is shooting 1-8 cause he's tired after being forced to play defense.

Saw the game tonight. Blatche continues to impress. McGuire's defense is going to have him playing a lot of end of 4th quarters eventually this season. The guy can play 2's, 3's and some 4's.

I was center court four rows up. Paid 25 bucks a ticket. Now THAT is bargain.

It was fun to watch the reserves in action. Very happy to see the explosivness in Mcguire. He can make an immediate impact for the team.

Nick Young appears to be a VERY young player in terms of maturity. For example, in the last couple of minutes he picked up his sixth foul out of frustration at an inadvertant elbow he got to the face from Jose Barea. I was right by it and it was obvious that Barea was just protecting the ball. Young took it personally and reacted with a shove at Barea, then it was bye-bye Young. I know he's young but a lot of the other guys are too (McGuire, Blatche, Pecherov are younger right?). If he's gonna be an effective professional he needs to start acting like it from day one. Another thing I picked up was from his reaction after making his first shot, he pulled a little deshawn hand-wave and headed to the bench with a big smile on his face. I'm sorry, but the kid was already 1-5 at that time, and ended up 3-10 with 3 turnovers. I don't mean to hate on the kid because I think he has potential, but I'll be hesitant to think he's a difference-maker until I see real production in a real game, and professional attitude (or at least not one of a kid that's playing in a rec league).

Pesh looked good. Man he is quick for a 7-footer! Watching him and Fazekas out on the same court was like watching the the tortoise and the hare. We are fortunate to have andray and pesh with their height and quickness. Could be something special for us down the line.

Caron also looked very strong. You can tell he's been conditioning. AD took a nice spill to the floor, looked like he tweaked the ankle a little bit but kept playing through it. I see what Ivan's been saying about Darius and AD working the court well; they seem to be looking out for each other.

Lastly, Mike Hall hustled out there. Hope the guy makes the regular season roster. Same with Massenburg! For a 40 year-old, that dude is strong and aggressive. Any chances he'll make it, I wonder?

Fun game to watch, overall.

DC Man88 is just a hater. Gilbert's coming back from a knee injury. Despite all the rehab and conditioning work and shooting he did this summer, it's going to take him a few games to get his shooting rhythm back against NBA competition. That's why they have preseason games.

Blatche looks like he's coming along--only 3 for 10 from the field, but he hit the boards hard and only had one foul and one TO. Hoping that he keeps it up and has a breakout game before the preseason ends.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

John Brisker is a fool.

In case you didn't watch any games last season, Gilby's shot has been off since right before the all-star game. He was lighting it up, up until then, but then had the problem with his shoulder (played the all star game anyway).

He then soon discovered that he had some sort of problem with his clavicle, I think, which the doctor popped back into place and which Gilby claimed right afterwards "I'm back!!!"

Guess what? He wasn't. Shot was off until he hurt his knee. Gilby will never be a high percentage shooter, but going 1-8 is either because his shot is off, or he's taking bad shots.

My guess right now is Gilby is still favoring his knee, assuming his shoulder is fully healed. He couldn't beat any one off the dribble during the Cleveland game, and was looking winded and frustrated chasing Daniel Gibson around (Gilby, it's called defense).

Gilby also played tonight against Dallas' ace defensive guard, Devin Harris, whom Les BouleS picked and traded to Dallas. Back in the day when Gilby was healthy, he could always beat his man off the dribble. Even still, his man always beat him off the dribble, but Gilby conserved energy by not playing any D. Now, the spotlight is on him to step up his D game.

BTW, Gilby's nickname for Nick and OPech of "Chuck & Larry" has got to be the dumbest and corniest nickname. Gilby is the best nickname.

I'm ready for the season to start, forget preseason. :)

"Hilarious. "AJ where's the ball?""

Yeah I had to laugh at that also. :)

I hope that Ayers yelling/players responding carries into the season when the Wiz are up by one against Miami and Jamison is defending whomever they inbound the ball into. ;)

"One game is only one game, but so much for all of the posters who were calling for Donnell Taylor to be cut after the Cleveland game...."

Yeah well, they stunk the joint up against other bench guys so they deserved the criticism. They can't do that during the season when Stevenson is on the bench.

It's still preseason, so we'll see I guess. I'm personally pretty excited about the upcoming season!

Sounds to me like the 16 million dollar man (aka Antawn Jamison) will be sitting once again if the game is close during the 4th quarter. What a way to spend 16 mil.

The good thing about DMac is not only can he play D, but he can shoot and can finish.

One more thought maybe Henry can help me out with here but I seem to recall the Wizards winning a lot of games last year when they held their opponents under 50% shooting.

You have of that info by chance Henry?

This is my take on who DCMan88 actually is:

We have Carter & Lee, WAPost, writers ,Buckantz TV analyst/Commentator, Oh Yes, we hired, Mr. "knife in your back/critical enemy no. one - but now drawing a Wiz pay-check"
Ed(Judas Iscariot)Tapscott, Eddie Jordan, "reading Coaching for Dummies!"
as he's doing his on-the-job training"
Abe & Ernie guarding the cash...

BUT then!! We have Mr. DCMan88!!! Blogger/Analyst Extrordinaire!!! His "Handle" if you will! Non other than "Gilbert Arenas"

Without him..he'd have no claim to fame..
He'll win a pulitzer once he compiles all his incredulous comments! He'll stop at nothing..DCMan is like the paparazzi chasing Diana, Hallie, Britney, Denzel and OJ or perhaps "Charize Theron??"
He probably sleeps outside Gil's door, club, gym with his laptop blogging on his every move..waiting to debate with us daring anyone to know any more about Gil than he. Why its almost a "Love Thing" of sorts.
Instead of waiting for Ivan & Michael to write a new article..we should just wait for DCMan88's - "Tuesday's with Gilbert"

Cuz its plain to see...Nobody can spaek one word about Gil without being skewered by the DCMan. Gil's own Charles Oakley(but via laptop)

Go ahead...I dare anyone to so much as "mention Gilbert A. " Something seething will come back immediately.

Just laughing out loud!!!

Y'know, that "it's just one game" door swings both ways, don't you?

Taylor is an athlete without a specific NBA position or skill.

I am not sure if McGuire really has a consistent outside shot yet. But if he can develop that to go along with rest of his game we may really have a player here.

Taylor, Hall or Massenburg ?

We're holding our breath until DCMan88 can give us the latest negative dish on Wizards Gilbert Arenas...Mr. DCMan88?

Hello Gilbert's beat reporter?
what happened in Philly?

We know - nobody knows or can report on Gil & the Wiz like you. You're the man
So lets hear or read it...

Ain't one move that guy does - you don't know or critique...Do you run his car down like the standard Paparrazi? follow him into the showers? OOOOOOH Kinky!!!
You must. We all know you follow him to Barry Farms, you're always commenting on his game & what he drove did!or didn't do.!Now, you're updating us on Gil's video games and apparently resorted to following his mother??....naughty, naughty somehow you've personally met her as well.

Do you follow Jason Campbell of the Redskins around like that too or just "Gil" that requires your undivided attention and critiquing?

Ok go ahead..try to play the dozens..spew some stupid venom..be typical or try finding that one good brain cell and use it.
