Butler out, Wiz at Nuggets

Caron Butler will not play tonight but is hoping to go Sunday night at Phoenix if that left hip flexor loosens up. Andray Blatche gets another start in Butler's place. The Wiz are 1-4 without Butler this season and 7-28 without him the last three seasons.

"Hopefully we'll see him before the trip is over," Wizards Coach Eddie Jordan said. "I don't know about Phoenix."

One player to keep an eye on tonight is Nuggets reserve F Linas Kleiza, who has been on a hot streak of late. The guy really plays with a ton of energy, can shoot the 3 and also takes it to basket hard. He's scored 10 or more points in eight of his last nine games.

Appreciate the updates Ivan.

Somehow we need to get over the hump on the end of 3rd/beginning of 4th quarter doldrums.

Eddie is going to have to suck it up and put guys in who can create their own shots and let them go even if that is at the expense of defense - Nick in particular.

I say we're going to continue to see Andray get all growns up.

Besides Mike Miller and Sczerbiak, here's another dude on the trading block. Bigger scorer than the aforementioned guys, more athletic, and cheaper.

Like to see the mention of Kleiza, Local Product in the fact that he went to Montrose Christian.

Posted by: Kyle | February 8, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Corey Maggette? 6'6" , plays SF, same position as Caron Butler.... Makes $7 Million per year.

So, first question:
Since Butler gets the greatest majority of minutes at the 3, why would you pay $7 Million for a backup that MIGHT get 10-15 minutes a game?

Second question:
What player or players from the Wizards would you be willing to trade for Maggette? (Keeping in mind that the salaries must match)

Posted by: Rook | February 8, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

My mention of Maggette is in conjunction with the other names such as Miller and Wally that have been brought up and also play the 3 that CBut plays.

Given that, CBut could move to the 2, and Maggette to the 3.

Trade machine says Gilby and ET for Maggette, Kaman, and Sam Cassell would work.

Les BouleS are down by 20 and the team is playing helter skelter with Roger "Green Light" Mason at the point, OPech lobbing 3's like they are going out of style, and AJ showing no leadership on the floor.

Might be a good reason to not watch the rest of the game, because it can only get uglier.

Posted by: DC Man88 | February 8, 2008 11:23 PM | Report abuse

forget trades and free agents, not going to happen with this regime.
THe only solution is making Ayres the head coach, which will also not happen with this ownership.
There is no way this franchise will compete, until ownership changes.
I thought 9 assists against the Spurs was rock bottom. But no , we had a grand total of 6 assists against Denver.
It is so obvious that making the extra pass, or any passes at all, is the way to generate energy, offensively and defensively. Why does the "coach" not reognize this.
He is clueless, and that does not even take into account the ridiculous substitutions, and excessive minutes for his stars.
Caron playing 39 minutes, after being out, and than falling again, is as predictable as that puzzled look on EJ's face.
Yes they are short handed, but the coach and the owner, can take credit for that.

Posted by: mricklen | February 9, 2008 1:23 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, it's all the coach and owner. The players bear no responsibility for the missed shots, bad turnovers, lack of blocking out on the defensive boards, or inability to shut down the lane or rotate out to shooters. Because we all know the coach never tells them to do any of that stuff.

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 1:55 AM | Report abuse

Good points kal, i think if we could get Corey Maggette we would be a lot better off!

Caron has good enough handles to help bringing the ball up court, and getting rid of Gil will seal in some of the improvements we have made this season!

It's a no brainer!

Posted by: i smoke | February 9, 2008 2:06 AM | Report abuse

Kal, of course the players bare responsibility. But there is talent on this team. It is up to management and the head coach, to make decisions that place the players and their abilities in position to maxamize their skills and talents. Also to develop and remove those who do not fit.
Playing the starters excess minutes, going one on one, puting up jumpers after one pass, not helping on defense, tells me that changes have to be made.
You can not continue to play the same men, and expect better results.
Any questions about BH ability to play more minutes and be a consistent contributor? He has been disappearing. Songalis lacks the skills to compete at this level, especially when playing the 1. He can only sib for AJ on a limited basis, and only with either AB in there or BH on the floor.
AD has been totally ineffevtive since his premature return from injury.
Where is the owner, GM in filling the crying needs for subs and a point guard on this team?
How long can a team compete night after night with the crazy NBA schedule with 8-9 players, half of them banged up?
Enough with the salary cap, other teams are making deals and picking up quality players to HELP!
This is a continuing saga with this team.
The only consistency is ownership and management.

Posted by: mricklen | February 9, 2008 8:01 AM | Report abuse

Actually,

I think the last few games have told me what I have thought the last few years: the Wiz need a real point guard.

When AD was healthy, they were winning and now they are not.

Secondly, conditioning has been mentioned on here several times and I agree with that as well.

The good thing about injuries are none of them is serious, except for AD's bone spurs. He's gonna need surgery to fix that. I have a feeling he's gonna try and grit it out until Gil gets back.

Bottom line is these guys have got to stay healthy and they aren't. EG might want to consider this going into next off-season no matter what happens in the playoffs *IF* the Wiz make it.

They are dropping a lot of games here. :(

Let get real, the Wiz will not improve until GA and CB get healthy AJ AND CB play a lot because who else do they have the bench is abysmal this fault lies with the GM not the head coach making Ayres the coach will not solve the problem EJ did not sign "TippyToes"(Darius) or Pecherov(let me shoot a 3) or Roger(chuck)Mason how in the hell do you resign a guy that every guard in the NBA goes by like he's standing still!!!, lets wait until everyone's healthy and then judge EJ.

Posted by: DARGREGMAG@AOL.COM | February 9, 2008 9:42 AM | Report abuse

Not much to say about a game where the Zards played without Arenas, Butler and Daniels got hurt. I'm not a big fan of EJ, but without those 3 players Red or the Zen Master would have trouble too.

Posted by: Buck Worthy | February 9, 2008 10:04 AM | Report abuse

Help Wanted: Point Guard who can run the Princeton and play solid defense.

The role players the Wiz have are fine. The problem is they are being asked to play outside their role... and they suck at it. The Wiz will have another one and done playoff season. But look at far AB has come this year...bodes well for next season.

Posted by: oddjob | February 9, 2008 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Uh huh. Winning on the road without Arenas, Butler, and Daniels is a no-brainer. Btw, wonder where Dray goes to suck up his Remys when he's away from K St.?

"Songalis lacks the skills to compete at this level, especially when playing the 1."

And in what games, exactly, has Songaila been playing PG?

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 12:54 PM | Report abuse

If the wiz have Arenas, Jamison, Butler, Haywood healthy late February and March, come playoff time, they could go deep into the playoff cycle. Now is the time to let Butler and Daniels heal, give Jamison 20-25 minutes a game and play the bench.
There are those that say Young, DMac, Blatche, Pecherov don't play because they don't bring it when they get their few game time minutes and in practice. The young players who develop in the NBA are playing big minutes, they look bad at times and cost games but that's the price for a good bench when it is composed of young talent.
Catch-22: they need to play to get better but they need to get better before they can play. Blatche is putting up interesting numbers as a starter, Young, Pecherov and D-Mac are a big part of what we've got for a bench and now that the vets are banged up I'd like to see them play big minutes. As long as we're losing let's get the youngsters out on the floor and the vets some healing time. When all you've got are lemons you might as well make lemonade.

Posted by: Myshkin | February 9, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Songaila actually had a nice game yesterday. He and Blatche were the only Wizards able to get the ball in the basket early on.

That said, the Wizards simply don't have enough depth, talent, and experience on their bench to absorb the absence of so many players from the top of their rotation. At some point the organization is going to have to decide if what's more important: developing players for the longer-term future or trying to make a move in a vulnerable eastern conference in the short term. If it's the later, they may have to sacrifice some or all of the young guys (and some picks) to get some players in here who can make a difference now.

-Perhaps, but they're losing anyway as is; the story line for this fairy tale is, that Arenas, Butler and the rest of the walking wounded, come back healthy after the all star game, use March for a tune up, squeak into the playoffs. From that point on, if they are healthy, they could be very entertaining.

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Look, no team is going to win much with two all-stars in street clothes, and down to their third point guard. It's simply a numbers game; the Wiz are running out of players. This isn't complicated, folks -- let's not make it so.

-No argument there.

Posted by: Myshkin | February 9, 2008 1:24 PM | Report abuse

I am with Myshkin. But I also think that the odds of a deep playoff run could be ehanced if the Wizards empty their piggy bank and obtain either Miller or Sczerbiak to provide the consistent veteran scoring punch that is needed off the bench. The team has two open roster spots, so they could trade some combination of draft picks, draft rights to our one unsigned Eastern European big man and cash to Memphis or Seattle... It is not a matter of unloading one of our current players. It is a matter of ownership deciding if spending some money now would pay for itself in terms of extra playoff dates, a bigger local market TV contract and a spike in next year's season ticket sales from making the Conference finals. The math and the risk taking is up to management, at the end of the day.

Khrabb - Look at the Collective Bargaining Agreement and tell me exactly how do the Wizards, who are OVER THE SALARY CAP, trade for a player unless they give up a player of equal salary value?

Posted by: Rook | February 9, 2008 2:39 PM | Report abuse

kalorama - Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Wizards just can't trade draft picks, draft rights and/or cash for a Wally Sczerbiak, Miller, or any other player....without trading equal value in salaries as well... right?

Posted by: Rook | February 9, 2008 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Like I said in an earlier post, it's easy to 'play' GM when you don't have to adhere to the rules in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

For those of you who think the Suns were crazy to trade for Shaq... think on this:
The Suns team Doctor saw no evidence of arthritis in O'Neal's hip and the current injury was limited to the outside of the hip -- and is already well on the way to healing.

Shaq said "I'm very upset," ... "You just don't really want to get me upset. When I'm upset I'm known to do certain things, like win championships."

A healthy, motivated Shaq in Phoenix? Does that change your perception of the trade?

Of course not. I never said, nor implied, that wasn't the case, so I have no idea why you're even asking me this question. Nor did I ever say anything about the Wizards acquiring Wally Sczerbiak.

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 11:44 PM | Report abuse

Rook,

My bad. I didn't see your post responding to khrabb's before your question to me.

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 11:50 PM | Report abuse

But the fact that trades have to be made in equal value on both sides doesn't preclude the Wizards from making a deal. It just requires some creativity (and possibly the likely involvement of a third team) to get one done. As for who they'd give up, as things currently stand, I'd say anyone outside of Jamison, Arenas, Butler, Blatche (and maybe Daniels) is fair game. The whole "keeping the core together and adding around it" approach hasn't exactly yielded groundbreaking results so far. I'd stop short of blowing it up completely, but even if everybody gets healthy in time, there's still little reason to think this team is going to be a serious contender this year. So Grunfeld's choice is either to wait until next year (again) or do something bold now.

Posted by: kalorama | February 9, 2008 11:56 PM | Report abuse

No. There was and is nothing wrong with Shaq. Its the same old point I tried to make clear. All Stars usually aren't "injured" everytime they don't play.

They "sit themselves down" minus injuries.

Repeatedly, I've asked the same question
What the heck did they resign Roger "Greenlight", "The Brick" "helter Skelter" "The Chuck" Mason? He spends all his time standing on the court trying to the the Wizards "savior" but he hasn't a clue. Watching Young is like watching an ACC game?? They're all out of condition

Gosh do the Wiz require a ton of help?

Yes.
