Rough road ahead
Tonight's game at Philly takes on added importance when you look ahead to what is in store for the Wizards. The Spurs make their only visit to the VC tomorrow night and then it's off on a four-game roadie with stops in Denver, Phoenix, Golden State, and LA against the Clipps. My question for you folks is this: given the way this team has played of late, what would be an acceptable record in these next six games going into the all-star break?

Very happy with 4-2, content/accept 3-3, and be (slightly) disappointed with 2-4.
1-5 would be embarrassing.

2-4...finish at the All-star break at .500. Given the injuries, this would be an incredible accomplishment. Then we start the waiting game for Gil and make our post season push.

3-3... shoot for .500
Posted by: Krem | February 5, 2008 10:41 AM | Report abuse
Acceptable? (2 - 4) 26 - 26 @ the All-Star break, thats what most said after GA went down.
@ PHI - you need to win
SA - loss is likely but is the least difficult non-Clipper/76'er match up
@ DEN - loss, just hope they compete
@ PHO - loss, this one has ugly loss written all over it
@ GS - loss, this has the potential of getting ugly
@ LAC - need to win this one.
You can expect better than 2-4, 3-3 would be an amazing achievement given the way they have been playing lately.

We should be very happy with 3-3.

Seems to me that the team has a knack for playing to the level of its competition. That having been said, I would be surprised to see them lose in Philly, then come back strong against the Spurs tomorrow night with a win.
From there, they'll talk about getting a win against 'a quality team' and using this west coast swing as a 'gauge of how they measure up' and heading into the all-star break with some 'momentum.'
I'd say Denver and Phoenix are losses; Clippers, close, but the Wiz pull it off. The Warriors game will be the only 300-point game this season. Nail-biter, with our boys coming out on top.
So, 3-3 would be ace. But, they'll probably go 2-4. Regardless, coming back after the break with (knock wood) three all-stars, ready for the stretch run? Buckle up!

When Wiz fans get their hopes up about beating Philly, you know we're in for rough times. Erratic coaching = erratic play (despite the injuries)
The Lakers are cap-busting with the Paul Gasol trade, the Wiz were too cheap to keep Mike Wilks (sp) around long enough to allow AD time to heal properly. Gilbert is watching.

I only see the 76ers and the Clips as the winnable games but either team especially the one in the west is a toss-up. Pediction.....PAIN! (1-5).

Got to get two. Anything above that is gravy.
Posted by: George Templeton | February 5, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse
Agree 3-3 would be acceptable.
When you break it down:
W in Philly. Figure "L" hosting the Spurs. A win against the Spurs would be a big plus, a loss to the Sixers a big disappointment.
Then aim for .500 or better on the road trip, and that looks doable. Three wins on the road would be a big deal.
So, better than 3 wins would be cool, as would a W versus SA. Fewer than 3 wins from the 6 games, or a loss to Phila, would be a drag.

I agree 3-3 is acceptable but the Wiz should really go hard or go home and ball out!!

1-5 would be no fun, but these guys look tired and slumping at the wrong time. They've seemed to regain their fire a couple of times before when they appeared down and have surprised, so maybe they will again.
Anything over 3-3 or above would be huge when you look at the season's schedule. These guy's have done a heck of a job to stick above .500 for this long.
If Gil could get healthy and playing by March 2nd he could give them a needed shot in the arm down the stretch.
To comment on the Chris Paul /Williams/ Gil conversation, in basketball some guys are just players and it is difficult to slot them. George Gervin, Charles Barkley, Adrian Dantley, and Earl Monroe were all guys that were difficult to really say what they were position wise. They didn't fit typical molds but they sure could play.
Gil in many ways is a player that is hard to slot, but guys that don't fit a certain mold are hard to matchup with. And that makes them so terribly dangerous when other teams try and figure out how to matchup with them.
As much as I like Gil, I also think Paul would be hard not to take. It would depend alot on the type of team the coach wants to create and the other players available.

My bad - I meant to say I would NOT be surprised to see them lose tonight against the 76ers. But, we'll see.
I do think that they WILL beat the Spurs who've actually posted a LOSING record on the road. Don't get me wrong, they'll course-correct...I'm just hoping it's not until AFTER they play at the phone booth. :)

2-4, with a health Butler and Jamison at the end would be great.

I hate to say this, but I only see one win for home team, Philly. I think they can beat the Clippers but not on the road. All those other teams are monsters. Like I've said many times before: Gilbert, come back!

They need to as my wife would say "buck up"stop looking for excuses and go out and compete that means you Andray,Darius,Nick,Dominic,Roger, and Pechorev.act like you want to win, the road is where you can earn your stripes.Back in the day you played back to back without all the perks, you guys are getting great per diem, nice hotels, and for the most part luxury travel. play some defense, you bench guys are killing this team where do you rank? damn near last in the league show some pride play like your job depended on it cause it just might.

2-4 or 3-3... Philly tonite is critical.
The Wiz basically need to be around .500 when Gilbert comes back and then try to finish strong with around 43-45 wins.

EJ should rush Gilby back.
Posted by: DC Man88 | February 5, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse
I'd assume 1-5. Given that, I'd also suggest the Wiz develop one or two "secondary" priorities (to winning, that is) in case that happens.
Posted by: Izman | February 5, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse
If they can win tonight, they should be able go 2-4 which would leave them with a .500 record at the break.
If they do better than 2-4, I would be pleasantly surprised, considering the strength of schedule, the road games and how they are playing right now.
Posted by: Tim | February 5, 2008 6:29 PM | Report abuse
If they lose tonite then 2 &4 If they win 4&2.
Let's be positive.
They need to push thru this stretch.
If they just mail it in then 1&5 if they get lucky.

What is wrong with Eddie? Why does he have this lineup in with 4 min to go? Where is Haywood? Why is EM playing now? This is Eddie's biggest blind spot. After dominating the 3rd quarter, Haywood is no where to be seen...if they lose this game it is purely on Eddie's head.
Posted by: oddjob | February 5, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse
That was a horrible and ugly lost. Yes, where the hell was Haywood when Philly was stuffing the ball down our throats the last 6 mins of the game?? EJ was clearly not coaching tonight.
It also didn't help that Jamison put up his worst offensive shooting game all season.
It will be a long February.

STUPID Playing at the end ! Stupid Stupid ! Sure the shots weren't falling, but how about attacking the glass more! Why keep settling for 3's when the shots aren't falling? Is that what Coach EJ is telling them to do during the timeouts!? Come on, if you are down by 5, you need a 2 and a 3 (plus a stop) to tie it up. Take the 2 if it is there. Even late, Daniels should not have passed up the easy layup! stupid I say ! of course, the post game comments won't admit that. Maybe Ivan will ask this obvious question about why they took all those shots. anybody want to guess EJ answer ?
Posted by: newguy | February 5, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse
And Butler left in the third with a strained left hip flexor.
Posted by: Tim | February 5, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse
What the hell is going on with this team right now? This is utterly putrid. They let the 76ers shut them down defensively in the fourth quarter. How is that possible?
And newguy, it's been EJ's MO to take the 3 at all costs, even when the clock doesn't dictate that you need it. It's unquestionably stupid unless Gil is out there.
But I'm more concerned about this defense, which looks like last year's version all of a sudden. Haywood and Blatche have become absolutely passive. The guards can't keep anyone in front of them. The pick-and-roll rotations are abysmal. Losing tonight to Philly was unacceptable, and now it looks like they could lose the next five in a row. to fall to four games below .500.
