Promising start, Arenas out

It's 49-33 Wizards at the half. First off, I have to give Wiz fans some credit tonight. I've been saying how lame it's been in here most of the season but folks really brought some energy and the white out thing looks pretty cool. It's pretty close to what Cavs fans brought to the table in Cleveland.

-Gilbert Arenas started but doesn't look right and limped off in obvious discomfort with three minutes left in the half. He has a bone bruise in his left knee - the same one that has been surgically repaired twice - and is out for the night. He's day to day.

-The key stat: in the first two games combined, Cleveland turned it over 19 times. Tonight, the Cavs have 15 turnovers in the first half alone and the Wiz have converted them into 18 points. Lots of sloppy play but also some good defense by the Wiz. Active hands.

-This is the Caron Butler we saw earlier in the season. He's bringing it with 12 points on five of eight shooting and all kinds of hustle. He's finally making the Cavs pay for having Wally Szczerbiak on him and just had an incredible spin move that turned into a sweet layup. Maybe the Tough Juice carving in his head is the key.

- Players of the half are Butler, Roger Mason Jr. and Brendan Haywood.

-Keys to the second half: Keep attacking, continue to force LeBron James to take jump shots and rebound, rebound, rebound.

Hopefully we can get twan a little more involved in the second half but the balanced attack looks great. Whatsup with the two step back 3s off steals?

Def, Haywood has played like a beast. A true team leader.

Posted by: ForThePeople | April 24, 2008 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Haywood has been playing GREAT the entire series!!!! Keep going Haywood!!!!

We just gotta win this game! Get over the mental hump and get that confidence! We can bury this team. I hope we just pour it on in the 2nd half! Just pound them and keep it coming!

Rebound rebound rebound! Defense and pressure! Move the ball, share the ball! Fast break! We got the tempo, we are pressuring on D and pushing the ball on O!

Keep it going! Come on Wizards!! Let's go!!!!!!

Posted by: Darnell | April 24, 2008 9:21 PM | Report abuse

yeah we have to get this one. They have to keep staying aggressive and drive to the basket.

The wizards need to keep it down. I know we're leading but it's just gonna be 2-1. Until we win one in Cleveland there's no cause for celebration. That's like jumping up for joy just because you made in to work.

Up by 25 in the 3rd. Thats how professionals respond to game 2. I was afraid my game 4 tix were going to waste.

Mike Lee and the more level headed out there were right... a series doesnt start until someone is beaten on their home court. The Wiz were the superior team (even without Gil) coming into the series and frankly that 30 point bludgeoning might be the wake up call that carries them to success this series.

Welcome back to all the fair weather fans who were tearing the Wiz over the last few games.

See you later to the cleveland jerks.

One of the key differences between tonight's game and the previous games has been the lack of fouls committed by the Wizards. They have to keep that up throughout the rest of the series.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 24, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

they are better with Gil in the game. To think otherwise is stupid. He wasn't 100% the first 2 games. You could tell he wasn't himself.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 24, 2008 10:21 PM | Report abuse

Yes, so if Gil is not 100%, then he shouldn't play, because they lost in those first two games that he did play, and now, they are crushing the Cavs and what a coincidence, he's not playing because he's out hurt.

BTW, few players are "100%" at this stage of the season. Case in point Caron and Lebron. To think otherwise is stupid.

Makes you wonder where the hell this team was the first two games? I've said all along we are much more talented than the Cavs 1-12. I think we finally saw that tonight!

By the way, why the hell did GA start the game? It was known BEFORE the game that he reaggravated his knee. And it's not like the team nor he have played particularly well together or played with the new catchphrase "discipline" with him on the court. Thought that was stupid!

That strip of LeBaby by CB would have been a foul in Cleveland!!! Believe that!

Are you people retarded? All Gilbert did the whole game was PASS the ball. He took shots when people kicked it out to him, but he had more dimes than points. They looked great when he was in, and they looked great when he left. This game was won because it was a general TEAM EFFORT. Please leave personal vendettas against one player aside, and stop nitpicking the fact that the Wizards just smacked the Cavaliers in the face. ENJOY THE MOMENT.

Hey Boobie et al... Gil made 3 straight stunning bounce passes at one point tonite - one ended in a foul and one a missed shot. But any one of those 3 was a better assist than we've seen from LeBron 'Magic' James all series. Yes Gil is really killing us on D, but he's played totally unselfish ball in games 1 and 3, so don't just throw out the blind and tired ballhog line if it aint so

That said

you fair-weather wiz fans are completely off the deep end, when gil played the first half he had some beautiful passes that setup up his teammates for easy buckets. He played within his capacity and he did a great job the limited time he was out there.

Well we held serve. Those who jumped off the ship on Monday were wrong. This is the playoffs folks. We should do our business on Sunday and then we have to pick one up on the lake. Again when backs are to the wall this team shows mental toughness and gets it done. But I hope they know that game 4 is not automatic. Gotta come ready to play again. Caron, Antwan, Mason and Blatche were huge. But Brendon...wow he has been amazing all series. They need to feed him more. He is catching and looking to hook or dunk. They need to feed him till Z gets in foul trouble and then feed him some more!

I am glad I was out of town for 3 days so I didn't have to hear all the negativity that I know was in the air.

Huge props to EJ for getting the team ready.

Posted by: BmoreRev | April 24, 2008 10:49 PM | Report abuse

I am of course very happy with tonight's game but...

Brendan was 5-6 from the field tonight and what, like 8-12 for the previous two games? So, he is shooting over 80% from the field, in the playoffs, and we only get him 6 shots a game?! Should we not keep feeding Brendan until he at least shoots a mortal 50%? Just wondering...

Posted by: Dr. Strangelove | April 24, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Gil had some decent passes when he was in the game, but he couldn't get a shot off because he had no lift in his bum knee. Dude is washed up.

However you want to look at it, the Wiz went on a 15 point run when Gil left the game. And, the Wiz lost the first two games when Gil took many shots. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out him being in the game ruins the flow of the team.

This is not a series until we win game 4!

C'mon guys. Quit getting on Agent Zero's case. He's only about 80% healthy right now, and everyone else on both teams is 100%.

If Gil was healthy, if he was 25 lbs lighter, and if he could pass and play D, then he'd be great.

Cut him some slack please. Sure we lost the first two games, but it's not like Gil took a lot of shots and it's not like he missed any of his defensive assignments. He's only 26....just barely out of high school.

The Wiz played great and showed to everyone that we are a legit playoff team. Still gotta win this one sunday or its all moot. Its a shame Arenas is getting slammed on this blog b/c he is now showing how much of a team player he is. He is out there risking his career on a knee that has been surgically repaired twice in the last year and now has a bruise all b/c he knows his presence alone will bring multiple defenders and free up others. I agree that the offense and defense currently flows better without Arenas, but that is b/c he has been out 90% of the year and NOT b/c he is a bad player. If arenas was at full strength and had played all year, we would have won game 1 for sure.

I hope this bad showing in the playoffs by Gil doesn't ruin his max money hopes. As Gil told us all, he's only coming back to prove he's worth max money. Obviously if he's not fully healthy enough, he shouldn't play, because the Wiz lost the games where Gil dominated the ball.

Arenas is not at full strength now, and talking about what he can do and what he did in the past is idiotic and a total waste of time.

What we've seen is when Gil is back in the game, the offense stalls because he's always shooting the ball or trying to draw a foul. I just hope Gil does us all a favor and shuts it down for the season.

Still gonna say Wiz in 6.

Glad they came back tonight looking like themselves, I thought the last couple games they were playing nothing like we all saw during the season. The Wiz are not the 1980's Pistons or the 1990's Knicks.

Everyone leave Gil alone. He's not washed up, but I do think (at least for this year) the writing may be on the wall.

Gil wasn't in for long but he was doing exactly what he needs to be doing with this team, looking to create for his teammates. If we could have this Gil the Wiz would be a tough team to beat.

It's a good thing Deshawn started hitting those threes because in the 1st Q when he was throwing up jump shots outside the offense it was exactly the thing Eddie had just told the players not to do.

I'm a pathetic Cleveland Fan. Can I please post on your blog? It's the only we can feel good about ourselves and city. We get happy about small accomplishments such as a 2-0 series lead to over compensate for the fact that our pathetic city hasn't been able to win ANY sports Championships. On top of all that, Lebron will opt out and leave us just like the Browns did. We won't have anyone else's nutz to slurp on anymore. I hope you understand. You will be seeing us around your blog a whole lot, we got 50 years to make up.

I know you guys won big tonight, but I'm sure me and other pathetic Cleveland Fans will continue to come to your site and talk trash. We talk trash even though our city hasn't won any championships, so why stop even if we got our butts kicked by 36 pts.

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:17 PM | Report abuse

One of the hidden stories of this game is that the Wiz had 10 more free throws than the Cavs. They were much more aggressive going inside, and were rewarded. Also, the defense on LeBron was tons better. Double-teams came earlier and were better set up.

James is a very streaky jump-shooter. I think they need to keep playing him exclusively for the drive. Give up the jumpers, even if he's making them. Keep him away from the rim (he had 4 free throws tonight.) The rest of the defense was inspired. We also played much more under control.

Great, impressive win. But still an incredibly long way to go. Don't get too up after this win; the Wiz have to use the same blueprint next game, and keep executing, or Cleveland could easily steal the next one.

Posted by: Keithinator | April 24, 2008 11:17 PM | Report abuse

I hope Gil sits for the rest of the series. He's already proven he's not worth half of max money. No more reason to hurt the team when you can't even run up the court anymore.

Posted by: Lisa | April 24, 2008 10:07 PM

I think Lisa is a pathetic Cleveland Fan, trying to bash franchise player while he's injured.

Posted by: Cleveland Fan | April 24, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

If Gil wants to see someone who is worth max money, he should keep watching Lebron.

Posted by: Lisa | April 24, 2008 11:19 PM | Report abuse

I think the Wiz are winning because the Cavs are bored, and know they can turn it up if they need to.

It's great to see that the Wiz are back to their team oriented approach since Gil is out for the rest of the game.

Posted by: Wizfan | April 24, 2008 10:11 PM

They were playing team-oriented when Gilby was in you stupid Troll

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Yes, the Wiz are so much better with Gil in the game which is why they lost the first two games.

Posted by: Brisker | April 24, 2008 10:13 PM

Yeah you are right. The other wizards played so much better. Jamison played so good. Butler played great. The bench was great. Everyone took great shots and played excellent D. It was all Gilby's fault. He lost the game for them by only playing 27 min

Brisker's sucha moron

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:22 PM | Report abuse

this Gil bashing is retarded. He's a great personality and a great player. He is taking shots because he is not 100%. Everyone will jump on the bandwagon when he gets back to his old self.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 24, 2008 11:25 PM | Report abuse

Yes, so if Gil is not 100%, then he shouldn't play, because they lost in those first two games that he did play, and now, they are crushing the Cavs and what a coincidence, he's not playing because he's out hurt.

BTW, few players are "100%" at this stage of the season. Case in point Caron and Lebron. To think otherwise is stupid.

Posted by: | April 24, 2008 10:25 PM

You must be an idiot. How can you compare "few players are "100%" at this stage of the season. Case in point Caron and Lebron." to 2 knee surgeries. So are you saying if lebron and caron had 2 knee surgeries they would play much better. What a moron. If Gilby didn't play then you would bash him and say he's not tough, he's too worried about his contract and etc. I don't understand some idiots.

All you big-mouth talking Cleveland fans where are you now. The Wiz set playoff franchise records for the biggest margin of victory and least points given up. Brilliant! It looked like the ball movement and passing were crisp and that there wasn't any stagnation on offense.
Now its a series ladies and gentlemen and it will be a real fight on Sunday.

Look at AD and Roger. They are so much more productive in this game with Gil out. Best game in this series so far for both.

I used to be the OLD DC Man88. Can you tell?

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:28 PM | Report abuse

Charles Barkley had a heckuva comment during the pregame. He said Arenas was an offensive stopper, meaning the offense stops when he touches the ball. He said Gil needs to pass the ball. Gil will never learn though. Once a ballhog, always a ballhog.

Posted by: Boobie | April 24, 2008 10:35 PM

Sure didn't look like Gilby was a ball hog tonight. He could have had like 8 assists in 10 minutes, if it was'nt for the Traveliers fouling

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:30 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I think Gil starting and playing was a boost because the rest of the team was so happy when he left with his bum knee that they immediately went on a 15 pt run without him. Yay!

GA really did not do much of ANYTHING. He played 6 minutes and we won by 36. It's hard to argue that this team does not miss him that much. He is not the heart and soul of this team whatsoever. He is basically like an outsourced hired gun. Is that a max contract player?

This is not a series until we win game 4!

@ dk

Where is all your Stevenson diatribe? I was with you that he was an embarrassment the last game, but your overall agenda is looking pretty bad. NY - one drive - one turnover! He may be the future, but he is not the present!

Also, the Wiz would have won game 2 if Gil had not shot so poorly and was looking to the refs to bail him out. Gil did the same thing at the end of the 1st game, which is why they lost.

Posted by: Vobiwan | April 24, 2008 11:00 PM

I agree. did you see how excited Gilby was for his teammates and team on the bench. did you see how much he encouraged everyone. If he was a selfish player he would have been sulking on the bench becasue he couldn't help.

Posted by: Marion Barry | April 24, 2008 11:50 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: C3PO | April 24, 2008 11:04 PM

I guess the offense really stalled when Gilby was in the game today huh moron??? He's the one that set the tempo and began the great ball movement.

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 24, 2008 11:52 PM | Report abuse

First off, Gilbert hasn't been hogging the ball. He scored 24 points on 16 shots in game 1. He had a bad game in game 2 as did the entire team and shot 10 times. So 26 shots in 2 games. He was passing the ball lots tonight. And Charles Barkley has been bashing the Wizards for years now. I'm not sure he's seen more than 5 Wizards games during that time. So who cares!

OK if your previous post didn't prove you are a moron than this did. Not only did you use the +/- as your argument, but you used it against a player who played 10 minutes.

And this is me. I changed my mind about Gilby since the 76ers game. I saw what a team player he is and how great he is, even with 2 knee surgeries.

Posted by: DC Man88 | April 25, 2008 12:21 AM | Report abuse

Oh man, that felt great. Heres the bottom line, you can say what you want about LeBron James being unstoppable, and I will not argue that point. As far as I'm concerned, though, Cleveland doesn't have anyone on the floor that can stay in front of Caron Butler, I don't know what he was doing those first two games but tonight he brought to the table what he was brining the entire season. The injury to Arenas is hurts, but if Butler sustains this level of play, the Cavs simply have no answer for him.

Posted by: Jason | April 25, 2008 12:25 AM | Report abuse

EJ had the most open and honest comments during an interview with TNT.

When asked about the return of Arenas, he said "the guys have been playing great for 60+ games, and obviously when you have someone come into the rotation late in the season, it's disruptive, but the guys knew this was coming and have to prepare for it."

Pretty much, EJ has no choice but to let Gil play if he wants to play, but if EJ had his druthers, he's probably keep Gil right next to him on the bench.

Team played great tonight without Gil, and showed that they can beat the Cavs without him.

If EJ was smart, he'd continue to limit Gil's minutes and let AD start and let AD know that he has full confidence in him to run the team. Just do what he's done all season. Don't worry about Gil and his demands for PT.

I love it. Arenas plays 10 minutes, takes two shots, dishes out three assists (and at least 2 or 3 other passes that would have been assists if the guys on the receiving end hadn't been fouled without scoring the FG) before leaving with a sore knee in a 40 point blowout win, and people are jumping all over each other to rip the guy for killing the team.

Effing ridiculous, yet totally predictable.

Great game all around by the Wiz.
