Site-Wide Blog Outage: Starting Today at Noon

A quick FYI from washingtonpost.com management: This blog, and all blogs on the site, will undergo an upgrade from noon ET Tuesday till about 3 pm ET Wednesday. You may see a limited number of posts on some blogs in that time frame, but you will not be able to comment. Some blogs -- like this one -- will not have posts or comments at all till tomorrow afternoon.

The upgrade will allow our staff to address some sorely needed technical issues.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience.

Finally, you are installing the anti-DCMan88 patch.

Well that puts a smile on my face. Boy it's about time, this site had decended into Dante's Inferno and the 88th level of hell!

It will be nice be able to talk about basketball again with out the constant sideshow. I've only kept coming back here because of Ivan and Micheal's great work, and there's a lot of good basketball fans that post here.

Maybe more of them will come back now...

I'm not sure the Anti-DCMan patch will be effective. We can all hope though can't we?

I'll definitely come back if the Post uses a secure/registration login process.

Guess the talk about an anti-'other guy' patch was premature. Unfortunately, sounds like they are only going to restrict comments to registered users. The 'other guy' could always create an email account and register again after having one account blocked.
There's gotta be a way...
If all else fails, we could always continue to ignore the 'other guy'. It seems to have been the most effective way of dealing with this situation.

Sorry for you, but I responded to someone else's posting about Gilby's pool. I didn't initiate anything.

While we're on this topic, Gilby can keep bragging about how great his 1 mil pool is, and how he's spent good money on buying 3 bull sharks for his 10,000 gal in house gold fish tank that he bought from Junior Griffey.

All we know is that for that 1 mil pool/grotto that he keeps saying is better than Hef's, he may use it 5 months out of the year, but for Hef, he'll be using it 12 months out of the year while entertaining all the hoes that live in that mansion.

Gilby? He'll be busy having the walls repainted and the house kept clean b/c of messy Laura and the kids while the pool is out of commission during fall, winter, and spring here in 4 season DC.

The schedule gives the Wiz a chance to get off to a good start with a heavy dose of early home games. Hopefully everyone involved will try and work Arenas into the rotation a little slower this time around.

Some real tough games down the stretch, as teams are jockeying for position going into the playoffs there's going to be some good head to head battles.

LeBron's Europe comment was interesting, see the world and make 50m per year tax free, not a bad way to make a living if you can get it. Cleveland has got to be worried, it's going to be hard to keep that guy out of the media capitals of the world.

And pardon me Drew Carry, Cleveland isn't one of them!

I wonder if EJ is going to employ the same strategy that he employed during training camp last season. If you recall, both EJ and Gilby got on TV and said that they weren't going to focus on offense, just defense in training camp b/c they trusted what they could do on offense.

Unfortunately, that blew up and the team couldn't score to save their lives and went on an 0-5 run to kick off the season.

I think if physically able though, Gilby's going to come out and will be firing on all cylinders. Whether the team will win, nobody knows.

People, please realize that some people do have neglect issues deriving from not getting what they need from their parents as far back as while they were even in the womb. Neglect causes people to seek negative attention. You wonder why some people even cut or stab themselves. They are seeking attention. Negative attention is better than no attention in their minds. They can't control themselves. They don't realize they are doing it. When I do this, please empathize with me. Please be understanding. My mother did not love me or want me. I never knew my father. On to a more interesting topic:

Caron came out like gangbusters last season. Slimmed down, got a 3 point stroke, couldn't miss from the FT line, gained respect throughout the league from his peers, took over the team and showed they could win without Gilby, highest points & assist totals in career, showed toughness on D, battled tough injuries, made the all star game w/o Gilby, etc.

It'll be interesting to see how he improves on that.

I'm buying my Wiz NBA finals tickets now, in case anyone wondered.

We're going to be a dynasty. Count it it.

Posted by: mark | August 7, 2008 2:47 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure about the dynasty thing, but what is clear is that Grunfeld has a plan and is sticking to it. But he's also allowed himself considerable leeway to change direction summer of 2010 if these youngsters don't pan out over the next two seasons.

Yes, it's important for Arenas to return to full health. But much of this team's improvement will rest in the hands of as they're calling themselves "the little three".

I do think that Butler will continue his Allstar play, I'd look for that range on his shot to improve even more this season. The guy's becoming a really complete NBA player and is really settling in here in DC.

Looking at next season's schedule I've got to wonder how LaBron, Kobe, and the rest of the Olympic Team will hold up to the wear and tear of nearly year round basketball. Will we see any of those guys wear down toward next spring?

40 games a year in Europe might be looking real good to Labron by about April 1st. It will be interesting to see if anyone's writing articles about the "Olympic Effect" on the NBA season by the end of the year.

A guy like Yao, coming off a foot problem, which is no small deal for a guy that big, is going to have logged a lot of games between now and next year's playoffs. With the money these NBA teams have invested in these guys, there's got to be some owners and GM's holding their breath hoping their guy comes home healthy.

Oh, and swimming pools are a great place for leg and back conditioning. If Gil got a note from his doctor, he probably even can write the cost of the pool off as a business expense...

Yeah, what a stroke of genius.

The IRS wouldn't have a problem with Gilby writing off a million dollar pool loaded with a huge grotto and fish tank that can only be used max 5 months/year. I'm sure it happens all the time.

Really believable.

GM, how did Ernie "allow himself considerable leeway to change direction summer of 2010" if he signed Gil and AJ for 5 years each and almost 170 mil?

There's no way another impact player can be signed without going over the lux tax threshold.

If this teams success is dependent on the little 3, that's a very sad statement.

Untrue.

The Wizards could have close to $20 mill in expiring contracts to use as trade bait going into the 2009/10 season, which is a helluva lot of flexibility when it comes to making deals.

I'm not the Salary Cap guy, but I think it can be made even bigger then 20m if needed. Blatche isn't quarenteed for the full five years and they have the ability to renounce rights on Pecherov and Young if they don't pan out.

Butler will be wanting a bigger payday when his deal ends, but Grunfeld has managed to retain quite a bit of flexibility in the two coming summers.
Meanwhile Cleveland has LaBron talking 50m per year and eying the Big Apple or planning a take over of Europe.

For this season it sure appears to me that Grunfeld is setting things up to give the little three a lot of court time. These guys will either sink or swim, and much of this season will rely on their ability to carry an increased load.

But if the young core blooms, then Ernie's got a deep young team and alot of cap space to deal. He's also retained all of his picks and has the conditional pick from Memphis in hand, plus he's got Vereemenko stashed over seas. Those aren't big trade chips but they are still assests. Plus he'll have the MLE to work with.

Actually with a Geo Thermal heat pump Arenas could heat his pool year round quite affordably. An inflatable dome and and a corn/pellet stove to dry and heat the air and Gil can turn it into a year round retreat if he wants.

An affordable(if you have a 100m contract)low carbon footprint, private oasis. And with a doctor's note partially tax deductible. A great place to do water excersizes to strengthen the knee and build the legs for next season.

Posted by: GM | August 8, 2008 8:27 AM | Report abuse

GM., You're hilarious. You actually responded to the pool/grotto/year round comments. LOL.

I think the little 3 is pretty good and at least one will wind up being a start somewhere. I sincerely hope we don't think about going near the max when CB comes due. He's a great complimentary player but giving him a ton of $$ would be a mistake, IMO. As usual, it's only my opinion.

Many years of dealing with the public has taught me that when dealing with those that have no sense, it's always helpful to maintain a sense of humor...

I hope Atlanta doesn't match that offer, maybe Memphis can get out of the cellar and we'll get that pick before Gil's pool freezes over...

Two more good season's and Butler could be due a big payday. I'm not sure he's a max money kind of guy, but he's going to want a very nice deal. I'm not sure that he won't really grow into a real top all around player if he can remain healthy.

He's seemed to have some terrible luck with injuries, but before the hip flexor last year the guy had gotten to the level where he was playing like a monster. If he keeps expanding that shooting range, which is not unexpected for a guy that's been in the league for awhile, he's going to be a real trple threat on offense.

The guy used to be a dribble and shoot the pull up jumper guy, now he can catch and shoot the three, or go to the rack and finish strong. Hopla has really helped his shooting and now he catches the ball and is ready to fire the three if open. And when a guy has three ways to score and has learned to go to the line put them down like he does you can really bet on the results.

He's well on his way to being more then a role player if he can stay healthy. With Jamison's range and a healthy Arenas this is a team that can really space the floor and give everyone room to work. Two years ago when Jamison pulled up lame teams could crowd the lane and take away Gil's penetration and Butler's mid range game at the same time.

With Butler's expanded game teams will have a lot more to think about now.

GM, you seemed convinced as I am that we're a dynasty to be. As a matter of fact, I'm heading down to the VC right now to get finals tickets....for the next 5 years.

Seems that someone is going to test the posting under other people's name as long as possible.

I'm just convinced Grunfeld's got a plan and he's sticking to it. it's a fun time to be a Wizards fan. I don't predict finals appearances, but I think this team will continue to improve as the youngsters mature around the big three.

one of the big 3 has some maturing to do also...we know who he is.

Not sure how big of a payday butler can expect in the future. he's got 3 more years left on his current contract. he'll be 31 when that is up. considering how injury prone he has been i wonder how well his body will be holding up.

i can't imagine he'd get a much better offer than jamison got this year, not including the general inflation rates, of course.

GM and others,
just FYI...
The 'other guy' has taken to fake posting in ppl's names again. I'll talk to you guys once the whole registration thing is finished. Until then, any postings under my name are from the 'other guy'. Apparently the silent treatmentis really getting to him to the point that he tries to elicit responses through a proxy.

yep, GM. Glad you reconized the fake stuff. What continues to amaze me is why anyone would be bothered by a fan being a fan. We should be getting fired up about people who DON'T support the team. Some posters here are making me miss the Cleveland guy that was here during our Cavs series. At least he knew who he was rooting for and stuck with them consistently.

It's hard to look out three years, I would guess the Wiz and Butler would actually start talking extension the season after next if he's healthy and happy.

But a Jamison like deal isn't a bad place to start talking for Butler. 4 to 5 years at 10-12m per year should be about right.

Yeah, and the Cleveland Guy thought "The Bet" was the funniest thing he ever heard!

Posted by: GM | August 8, 2008 2:52 PM | Report abuse

I know I know. I'm a juvenile but I just saw this on the Redskins site..

"Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan took in practice, along with his 10-year-old son Jaxson and assistant Mike O'Koren. A svelte-looking Jordan chatted with Redskins front-office boss Vinny Cerrato during practice and quarterback Jason Campbell after the morning session. Jaxson had the chance to help out by putting balls into the JUGS machine for punters Derrick Frost and Durant Brooks to hold on simulated field goal and extra point snaps."

So he's only 10 and he's already putting the balls into the JUGGS? I was 18 before I tried that.

Who's the "Cleveland Guy" who makes anyone wanna care besides you?

I guess it must be humor for those born before 1940.

Ah, my young friend, getting ready for another night of discord online...

Me, I've got to go, time to have a drink out by my pool. It pales incomparison to Gil's, but I still like it. It's nice enough for an old guy...

And actually I found the guy from Cleveland interesting to talk to, I've always enjoyed talking sports with people from other cities if they're really fans.

Dopes that just say stuff to start a fight, they're not sports fans, they're just bullies looking for a fight. Not a whole lot different weather you meet in a bar, in the stands, or online...

Remember a sense of humor always helps when dealing with the senseless...

Ah my old friend, getting ready to bake yourself by your pool. Hopefully the big one won't come and hit you when you least expect it.

I'm glad you found a friend in Cleveland to talk to as you seem to revere in his words.

Guys that write just the obvious on a blog, like you, and buy into the company line year after year, decade after decade, aren't sports fans. Just dopes grasping for something to blindly cheer for.

Remember, having some sense instead of being senseless will prevent you from being disappointed year after year, season after season....

Good golly Miss Dolly! First appearance in weeks and I see all of this! You like me, you really like me!!!

regard the Wizards' upcoming season, I'd say the three big questions are:

1) whether Gil and Caron can each play at their best, while on the floor at the same time. if that were to actually happen, and if Jamison stayed healthy, the team would be among the best in the league. the cynic in me says it will never happen.

2) whether the bench players can develop into consistent contributors. injuries have been too big an issue the last three years, and they need people who can spell the big three for longer periods. yep, that means NY, DM and AB. we've seen flashes from all of them; but so far, so little.

3) defense. the improvement last year was better than I could've predicted, but was it just the absence of Gil? and I say this as a big fan of number 0.

and what the heck--

4) road wins. I don't know what it is that a team needs to win away from home. tenacity? focus? "mental toughness"? whatever it is, they haven't had it.

LOL!

When markie is down at the VC getting his season tickets for the next 5 years like he tells us, I'm sure he can get some stir fried pig nads over brown rice at any chinese takeout for a lot less than $7k.

Finger lickin' good for markie.
