Great question -- what the heck does Ernie do?

Posted by: SteveC28 | December 3, 2008 6:33 PM

I wouldn't expect to see Haywood in uniform this season, esp. if it looks like they're out of the playoff hunt. The timeline was 4 to 6 months. Six months is basically the entire season. If he is ready to go before that but it looks like the team is lottery bound, I doubt that he or the team would think it worth risking re-injury for a few weeks of meaningless running out the clock duty.

But it is funny how all of a sudden under Tapscott, Songaila at the 5 is cool, but under Jordan it was evil personified.

Posted by: kalo_rama | December 3, 2008 1:18 PM

Nope was not saying it was cool at all. I still do not like it and I still believe McGee or AB should man ALL of the minutes there. If they are in foul trouble (i.e. the Orlando game) then you slide in Song. That is the only time.

I will play Song. there over Etan as a third option only. Song was the only one on the team who did not allow Howard to have his way, as he was doing against the other 3 folks, and I think that is what caught Tabscott's eye.

If you noticed Tabscott was using Song at the 4 only, as he should have, up until that Magic game when it was clear McGee was not strong enough for Howard, AB got in quick foul trouble and Etan keep missing bunnies and getting shot over at will.

If you notice in each game Tabscott does not start off using Song. at the 5 in the second quarter like EJ used to do. The reason it was "not cool" when EJ did it was because he never even gave AB or McGee a chance to even play the spot to start the second quarter off.

Instead EJ went straight to "slow small ball" even if it meant a mismatch (i.e. Song at "5") not to our advantage, go figure...??

In contrast, Tabscott gives both (McGee and AB) of them a chance as first option and if he feels they are not playing "d", rebounding, and showing energy in fronting the opposing "5" he then goes to Song. I still don't like it regardless.

Again, I was never a Song. hater because I believe the dude has nice skills, I just did not like him being played at the "5" as a first option as EJ liked to do.

Song playing the "5" makes us unable to grab defensive rebounds and we have no shot blocking pressence in the paint. So that is why I was and STILL AM against slow small ball, no matter who is coaching it.

Yes you are right it was evil personified to the Nth degree, not because EJ was doing it; but because it is just a bad combo unit for anybody who is coaching this team to use.

Keep pushing the ball and they will be fine. DB back in the lineup.

You nailed Larry, all momentum stopped once AD entered the game.

The Wizards are going to make the playoffs this year, all we have to do is stay within 4/5 games back from the 8 seed and then win Gilbert gets back we will inevitably go on a hot streak and win like 8 of 10 games or something and there we are.

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | December 3, 2008 8:42 PM

Blazers are scoring WAY too easily.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 3, 2008 8:46 PM

McGuire plays some awesome defense!

Posted by: rachel216 | December 3, 2008 8:51 PM

can't get stops when it matters most...*sigh*

Posted by: rachel216 | December 3, 2008 9:16 PM

Didn't get much guard play except for a nice contribution from NY off the bench.

Stevenson et al. returned to form.

The first area they have to address is the backcourt. Even if GA comes back relatively 100%, they still need help.

Need: fulltime guard and another interior players/defender that can put some hurt on people. Too many uncontested layups.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 3, 2008 9:19 PM

Can somebody explain to me why when you're trying to get stops with a minute and change left, the team leaves it's 2 best interior defenders (Blatche and McGee) and it's best perimeter defender (McGuire) on the bench?

And on the other end, when you're trying to score quick and efficiently, you have 2 of your 4 best scorers on the bench (Young and Blatche)?

I mean the team was playing from possession to possession down the stretch anyway with all the timeouts that were called, could they not make adjustments? Am I missing something that these veterans have on defense (Songaila, Daniels) and offense (Stevenson, Daniels)?

IMO, a serious youth commitment needs to be made. Most of Stevensons minutes at the 2 should be split between Young & McGuire (or Butler at the 2, McGuire at the 3). McGuire is already a better energy player than Stevenson, and now Stevenson basically adds nothing via the offense. And Gil cannot come back quick enough, because Daniels cannot get it done anymore, and Dee Brown will only be effective on so many nights.

Same sorry coaching. Tapscott isn't even a career .500 coach in college. He's awful. They are a much better team with Blatche out there making things happen like he has been the last few games but at the end he's got Songalia and Stevenson in the game bricking FT after FT. I don't understand the obsession with these 2. And when he had a chance to sub for defense he leaves Songalia in and he fouls Blake. Game over. Great coaching Ed. Maybe when they are 15-60 he will play some of the youth extended minutes and in crunch time.

AND YOU WANTED EJ OUT!! ETAP CAN'T EVEN DRAW UP A PLAY WHY IS WES UNSELD JR DRAWING UP A PLAY IN THE FINAL MINUTES OF A GAME? Ahh let me guess because ETAP doesn't have a clue Wes Jr has never coached a game in his life yet he is drawing up a play?PLEASE!! He has DeShawn in the game down the stretch not only is he choking at the line but he can't stop Brandon Roy, for all the defense DeShawn provides he might as well put Nick Young in the game at least he'll make his free throws and Andray Blatche is a ZERO he has no upper body strength at all what has he been doing all summer?let me answer that for you(chasing skirts, because thats about all he's good for!!) EG fires a good coach and replaces him with a know nothing suck up who can't even draw up a play but this is what all you EJ haters wanted happy now? i hope so because if this team wins 25 games it will be a miracle enjoy the lottery cause that's where this team is headed!!!

Tough loss, but not unexpected.
AD and DS are just not competitive. I keep hearing about DS's defense...I am tired of guards continually beatinh him off the dribble...he just slides does not move his feet or body. Not to mention his choke foul shots.
Also where was the ball movement?
Too much one on one for AJ and CB...inevitably leads to shut down in crunch time.

Posted by: maxman2162 | December 3, 2008 9:47 PM

You know you are an amateur AAU coach when:
You have to have Wes Unseld Jr. draw up plays at the end of games. What the hell do they do in practice?

Posted by: mschmall625 | December 3, 2008 9:47 PM

I saw some of Jordan's influence on Tabscott near the end of the game. Why in the world would you have Stevenson and AD in the backcourt when you needed important stops and Roy was killing you?????

Where was Juan Dixon or better yet DMac to go out and check Roy??? AD is clearly still hurt, so why is he still trying to play??? You can give those minutes to Juan Dixon.

As hard as I have been on Dee Brown I have to give him some credit because the little dude has now played 2 good games in a row. If you noticed when he was in there he pressured the ball on the perimeter and made it difficult for the Blazers to get into their offensive sets.

Why he was no where to be found in the 4th quarter I do not know. If it was a size issue and Tabscott being afraid he was going to get posted up, so what? Let them do it first and then adjust.

***** Tabscott needs to sit AD down for 10 to 15 games and give his minutes to Juan Dixon. Also, AB's game is coming along; he needs more minutes. But on the flip side he needs to stop trying to be the "iceman" and finger rolling everything and instead start attacking the rim like the "rainman" used to do.....

dargregmag - Tabscott is the "interim" coach. Not the permanent coach. As for if Eddie was coaching, he would have been playing small ball the whole 2nd half and giving Etan 30 minutes.

By the way, Jordan would have had that same backcourt (Stevenson and AD) in the closing minutes just like Tabscott had, trust me.

Again, I have been saying if you were not going to make a 180 switch from what Jordan was doing, you my as well have not fired him.

That 4th quarter looked like a Jordan coached game, plain and simple. Look, Eddie's shelf life expired; he just like Joe Gibbs setup the foundation for the Wiz. He took them as far as he could.

The youngsta's need some run now and Jordan did not want to do it. Now it looks like Tabscott does not want to do it either. So again, I ask what was the point in firing Jordan if we were going to pretty much get the same in game coaching miscues and same flawed subsititution calls?

I saw most of this game. I am disappointed that they did not commit enough to DB running the point. As good as Portland is, I did not see them take this game from the Wizs. I saw decisions by the Wizs that most of you have pointed out that caused them to lose.

Metawn again didn't make it to the FT line even though he took 17 shots....ho hum...

And, DS couldn't make a critical defensive stop against Roy at the end where Roy made a 1 ft. layup....ho hum.....

"*** Free Juan Dixon........"

Lol, they need to.

Someone please tell EG that Deshank Stevenson sucks donkey balls.

I mean seriously, now I know why he makes that "wave" thing in front of his face. It's to keep from getting smacked in the head by them when he throws that crap he calls a shot up.

Reality Check People,

The reason the old man made Tabscott the coach is because he is already on the payroll. Have you ever heard of a team that hires an interim coach this early in the season? Abe does not want to pay another coach as long as he has to pay Jordan.

The season is over, sorry Barno1, I hate to be the one that has to explain it to you, but this team has no shot at winning a championship this year. Everyone knows what you get with AJ, DS squared, AD, JD, and ET. It’s time to play DB at point, NY at SG, CB at SF, DM or AB at PF and JM at C. This team is going to lose anyway, so play the young guys to see if any of them have any potential. The reason Portland is so good is because of the draft. This team needs to rebuild through the draft since we all know ABE is too cheap to sign first tier free agents.

Now keep in mind that I'm a big Dee Brown fan, and I only got to listen to the first 11 minutes of the game before I took off for the Bucks vs Bulls game tonight.

But...

Can anyone tell me why Dee only played 16 min total, which is basically 5 minutes out of the 37 that occured after I stopped listening? Was he getting beat off the dribble? Was Steve Blake running the show over Dee? Or was it something else?
