Celtics at Wizards

Information on tonight's game:

-New Wizards Javaris Crittenton and Mike James will in uniform and available to play tonight.

Wizards starters: Juan Dixon, DeShawn Stevenson, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, JaVale McGee.

Inactives: Oleksiy Pecherov, Brendan Haywood, Gilbert Arenas.

Celtics starters: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins.

Refs: Bill Spooner, Bill Kennedy, Derek Richardson.

Line: Celtics by 10 1/2.

Notables: The Celtics have won 12 straight....Rondo is playing great ball: since Nov. 18, the third year G is averaging 13.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 8.6 assists and 2.4 steals while shooting 57.8 percent....The Wizards won last year's season-series 3-1...The C's averaged 100.5 ppg last season but put up only 89.8 ppg in four games against the Wizards.

-Coach Ed Tapscott said Antawn Jamison would open against Kevin Garnett defensively with rookie C JaVale McGee drawing Kendrick Perkins. McGee was schooled by Rasheed Wallace the other night and Tapscott wants to let him ease into the game. Look for Andray Blatche to draw some Garnett some as well. You may remember Blatche having one of his strongest games against Garnett and the T-Wolves here at the VC a couple of seasons ago.

-The first all-star game fan voting ballots came out today and neither Caron Butler nor Antawn Jamison rank among the top 11 forwards in East. Butler is averaging career-highs in scoring (22.5) and field goal percentage (48 percent) while Jamison ranks second among all NBA forwards with 13 double-doubles.

-Tapscott said he has a "plan" for how he might use Crittenton and James tonight but he didn't lay that plan out to the media before the game.

-Crittenton didn't have shoes in Wiz colors so Gilbert Arenas gave him a pair of his signature Adidas lowtops.

-Funny note about James: He and his family will be featured on the show "Supernanny" tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on ABC.

I want Buckhantz and Chenier, I don't like these people...

but the Wizards NEED to stop giving up offensive rebounds

Deshawn Stevenson makes me angry, GRRRRRR

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

down by 20 now... giving up too many second chance points, the Wizards have no energy tonight...

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Can anyone tell me why Deshawn still in the game? He's coughing up way too many turnovers.

Posted by: demonj21 | December 11, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Ugh, the Wizards have nothing tonight. If the Celtics wanted to win by 50, they could.

Okay, 45.

And Stevenson, man, no team can have a No. 1 shooting guard who hits 30% of his shots.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 11, 2008 9:09 PM | Report abuse

this is getting ugly. wiz have had 26 points for 10 minutes

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2008 9:12 PM | Report abuse

wiz have had 26 points for 10 minutes

Umm, that's 26 points in 20 minutes.

Oy, will they top 60 for the game?

I say they finish with 62 on a late 3-pointer by Stevenson.

His only made shot for the night.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 11, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Les BouleS down by 19 pts near the half.

No surprise there.

That's what happens when you have absolutely no interior scoring or defense whatsoever.

JaTravel looking every bit the rookie that he is.

Without BTH, Les BouleS have little chance in repeating the success they had against the Celts last season.

Man, what a time to have a bad shooting night; by EVERYBODY on national tv. To the credit of Reggie, Mike and Albert they are doing a good job for a blowout game.

I see that nationally televised game on Christmas being resheduled. I still do not know why McGee is getting the AB treatment (i.e. Jordan on AB). Why is Etan getting his minutes? The game is a blowout, so why not pay him.....????

No matter how you put it, Barkley and TNT announcers have absolutely nothing to do with the play or outcome of this game.

JaTravel looking every bit the rookie that he is.

He's lost out there.

I've never understood those who say he can play big minutes. He's just too raw.

Yeah, he's all they got, though. Even with a healthy Haywood, they'd be in trouble.

No guards (slight improvement, I guess, with the two new players), no inside game.

Grunfeld did a poor job assembling this mess even with the injuries.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 11, 2008 9:22 PM | Report abuse

I can't stand this. Tapscott would rather lose by 60 with his vets than play the youngsters and let them learn. EG needs to ORDER him to play McGee, McGuire, etc. Thomas doesn't belong on an NBA roster; neither does Stevenson. But they get the minutes.

I just turned off the game. I may not watch another Wiz outing this year. We're not developing young talent; we're letting the hallowed vets take us to the bottom of the ocean. It's like Eddie J. all over again. Tapscott has learned nothing. Sigh. I had hopes for him. What a fool I was.

JaTravel's mom might be better off watching the game from home.

Reggie was funny in how he said he had asked JaTravel's mom to his HS prom. She looks good for her age.

what an embarassing performance, they're not even competitive... game over, actually it was game over in the second quarter.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Actually, game was over before we started tonight.

No emotion from team, crowd, GM, nobody.

Turned it off before half - watching the Bears-Saints game now.

Wake me up when the season is over...

keithward64, I agree with you. See how Boston start off with their starters then end the half with their starters? That's consistency of how you run a team. We keep starting with the starters then end with 2 or 3 different players.

To reword, the Wizards had STAYED at 26 points for the longest time ever

This game on TNT must be on time delay. I'm watching the game right now, and also checking ESPN online and the game is already at halftime online.

Wow, DeS outdid himself - on both ends of the court. Even as the worst SG shooting guard in the league, he's overrated.

What is EG and ET thinking???

"No matter how you put it, Barkley and TNT announcers have absolutely nothing to do with the play or outcome of this game."

non sequitur of the day, but yes, you are correct.

Posted by: crs-one | December 11, 2008 9:36 PM | Report abuse

deshawn should never be allowed on the floor again, the league in a product quality control effort should tell the wizards he is simply not allowed to represent the NBA any longer. Free javale and young and let blatche play the bulk in pf mins, jamison can't guard anyone, play mcgee and blatche to try and help erase mistakes and make an attempt to play inside. Deshawn has a single rebound and four sweet turnovers in 13 minutes, at this rate anyone reading this is better off being out there than our resident can't feel his face bum. Afraid mcgee might block 6 shots in a full game?

Posted by: bford1kb | December 11, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Let's see....barring a trade during the season, Les BouleS would probably be targeting Tyler Hansborough, Blake Griffin, or maybe even Greg Monroe (GU) if he comes out.

Les BouleS need serious help at the 4.

You can't have an inexperienced JaTravel at the 5 when he has no one covering his back at the 4.

Yep.

Forget the draft, they first need to find a body that can muscle inside to help out on the boards and defensively.

This is how guys like Oakley or PJ Brown played forever. Like left-handers in baseball.

Nobody like that in this draft that can help right away inside.

Charles Barkley has a gift for gab and thats about it. Kenny Smith is letting his comments be influenced by Charles more and more. I watched the TNT broadcast before Charles was bought on board and Kenny was great before Charles, but all he does now is let Charles have his way.

Listen, like Charles I don't have no NBA championship ring either, but Charles just Gabs and he sounds good, but he's poison.

Keithward64 - I was just thinking the same thing. I can believe I am saying this, but Tabscott has looked like he has completely killed McGee's confidence. Tabscott is also starting to do the same thing with NY.

For AB it was Eddid Jordan, and for McGee it looks like it is Tabscott. I do not understand what he is doing. He waited unitl the 4th quarter to put in DMac.

McGee looks totally unsure of himself out there now, when before he did not. After the Magic game he and his minutes have not been the same.

*** Stevenson has to go, nothing more too it. Sit him down and let NY get those minutes to develop. What is the deal with both Eddie's giving Stevenson so many minutes?????? Never will understand it.

Posted by: BulletsFever | December 11, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Guys, you cannot feel bad about a game like this. The Celts are rolling on all cylinders, and after we kicked their butts last year, there was no way they was gonna let us sneak up on them.

The 3rd quarter was a winner for me. It showed me something.

Posted by: LarryInClintonMD | December 11, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Why is Dsong in the game with 5 minutes left to play? Do we need to watch him develope? Put Blatche in the game.

I can't stand this. Tapscott would rather lose by 60 with his vets than play the youngsters and let them learn.

The only explanation is that this organization somehow believes that it can still make the playoffs. Heck, that's why they fired EJ.

They believe that they can struggle somewhat with the veterans and then if Arenas and perhaps Haywood can come back they can make a late season push for the playoffs.

That's the only explanation I can see.

If they go with the younger players they're admitting they're writing the season off.

Eventually, they'll do it (play the young guys). But I guess they want to try and hold that off as long possible.

Well, it was refreshing to see how Juan responded to ETap's half time pep talk as he came out of the gates charging.

Too bad the rest of the team was busy eating hot dogs, playing pool, and planning a night at Love again.

MeTawn Jamison.....one FT attempt...enough said.

"The 3rd quarter was a winner for me. It showed me something."

It showed me that the Celtics were cocky and bored.

Why was this game even on national TV? The best team in the NBA vs. the worst team in their conference? That's appointment viewing.

Posted by: kalo_rama | December 11, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I said when EJ was still coach that EG would not let him mismanage JM like he did to BH. Even though I do not agree with how ETaps is using JM, I do not think he will mismanage him. If it becomes evident that he is, he will be gone just like Eddie.

Have faith Wizard Fans, Ernie Grunfield is in the drivers seat now and he intends on winning this race.

The trouble with hiring coaches with no prior experience or never won anything in their lives is that they will ride the veterans due to insecurity. They have no confidence and are too scared and too impatient to rely or develop young talents. That is why I was really puzzled by the hiring of Eddie Tapscott. He must have spewed some real BS or kiss some real behinds to land this position. Ernie better realize this quick and start scouting the for a real coach ASAP.

Posted by: JohnWWW | December 11, 2008 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: washwiz | December 11, 2008 11:31 PM | Report abuse

Well its looks like the ETAP fan club members are eroding fast,I'd like to say i'm surprised but i'm not ETAP has no business coaching the Wizards or any NBA team for that matter you can say what you want about Jordan but he was well organized and prepared night in and night out.I would love to interview AD now that he is gone and get his view on EJ's departure but all of you EJ critics couldn't wait for him to be canned. They beat the Celtics three out of four last season and it was EJ's scheme and his x's and o's that played a huge part in those wins, so here's hoping we get a good lottery pick cause that's where we're headed and oh yeah Mike James is a bald headed version of Deshawn Stevenson a "bricklayer".

JohnWWW that is a real good analogy. I totally agree, but mayber Ernie G. might have thought that since ETaps has a good executive resume, that he would not fall in this trap. I sincerely hope thats the case and if ETaps does not recognize it, I'm with you all the way. Great point.

The team is now 6 games off the .500 mark and will likely be at least 10 off by mid-January, which is probably generous. Even if Gil were to return in that time frame I don't believe it will be possible for this team to have any chance to make the playoffs this year.

As noted in another post, ownership is not ready to admit that yet. Additionally, the league likely frowns on any team perceived to be playing for the draft and to play the kids most of the minutes does say this. Lastly, Pollin needs to still try and sell seats and outside of this blog most folks do not know who Crittenton or half of the other Wiz players are.

I watched most of the 4th quarter via the TNT online broadcast and chose the isolation camera on Butler. This game was completely out of reach and Butler's body language said so. I love Caron but he did not push at all that quarter. Regardless of whether there is a mathematical chance to win the game it is not acceptable to mail it in, particularly from a captain. Why was he not demanding the ball, scrapping, hustling, digging in on D, barking at others...showing any heart at all? Not good enough...particularly in tough times these guys are quickly going to lose favor for collecting 40k for a 12 min quarter which looked like less exertion than most games on the local blacktop.
