Wizards to Wear Throwbacks vs. Lakers

(Courtesy Washington Wizards )

As Ivan mentioned in today's newspaper, tomorrow the Wizards will wear throwback uniforms -- modeled here by Antawn Jamison -- commemorating the 1962-63 Chicago Zephyrs. It is also honoring the 45th anniversary of ownership by Abe Pollin.

A brief history: According to hoopedia.nba.com, the Washington franchise joined the NBA in 1961 as the Chicago Packers. (Owner David Trager named the club after his packing company.) One year later, the team name was changed to Chicago Zephyrs.

The team moved to Baltimore in 1963 and was renamed the Baltimore Bullets after the city's original NBA franchise. The new Bullets remained in Baltimore until 1973 when the team moved to Washington, D.C., [actually Landover, Md.] and was named the Capitol Bullets. In 1974 the team was renamed the Washington Bullets, and in 1997 were renamed again the Washington Wizards.

End of history lesson.

So, what do you think of the throwback uniforms?

Anything is better than those gold and black monstrosities.

they look fine except for the fake sleeve things. why not have the proper arm holes with the trim instead of faking it. that little bit of white inside the fake armhole trim really makes it look kinda bad.

At 3-12, whatever gets the W.

Great. Now they get to look worse than they play. (Those gold-and-black assaults on our collective eyesight were bad enough, but at least I'd gotten used to them.)

Could they just bring back the orange-and-black Bullets' jersey from 1970 as the throwback? The ones they debuted in 2005 against the Lakers in LA? Those were pretty tight. I'd be cool with the red-white-and-blue Bullets jerseys from the Era of Big E too.

How about some throwback players who actually play D?!?!

They look like those ugle black and gold uniforms they wore last season...

FIRE ED RASCLOTT!!!

Posted by: prescrunk | December 4, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

They're nice. I wouldn't want to wear them full time, but there's nothing wrong with wearing them as throwback alternates. They're already better than our standard uniforms, and miles better than the black and gold alternates (then again, what isn't?)

The team ought to be wearing the Michael Jordan-era throwbacks. Those things were as sweet as it gets.

I like the old Bullet's uniforms. The red, white, and blue ones. Those are real throwbacks.

please change the team back to the Bullets, name, uniforms and all...

Pindarpushkin yeah right I thought the same thing about the fake sleeves. What's up with that?!! It's like a picture of a jersey on a jersey. They couldn't make the actual jersey??

I can't believe Dixon didn't play against Blake! That would've been great to see.

FREE JUAN DIXON!!!!!

I agree, the old Bullets uniforms are the best.

It looks good but if that uniform causes them to Run and Gun, Go Zephyrs!!!

I can't remember if the team was originally called the Chicago Zephyrs because (a) Zephyrus was a wind god and Chicago is yadda yadda or (b) the Zephyr was a fast passenger train (!) that originated in Chicago, or (c) both... So if our Zephs can run like the wind and strike with the force of a train, perhaps they will surprise the Lakers tonight... or maybe the Lakers will just be so confused by the name on the throwback jerseys that they will think these are different players than the ones on the 3-12 team they thought they had come to DC to play ...

I think whatever they wear they are still going to lose by a ton to Mikes Lakers.

I think the throwbacks look just fine. Now, if someone could just tell me what a "Zephyr" is . . . .

Kinda like when your opponent blows by you based on your matador defense...

Just feel like venting my opinion this morning.

-First off, big props to Tap for not playing the poet AT ALL. Good move.

-Unfortuately, Song is still getting minutes. This needs to stop asap. We need rebounding and toughness, none of which he brings.

-Dee should get more minutes.

-AD should not be seeing as muchminutes as hes getting, if any.

-NY should be playing at least 30 mpg. He doesnt need to start, but we need to use him like Manu in SA. He's to godd and talented.

In conclusion, here is the starting 5 should stay the same (Dee, DS, CB, AJ, JA)

With ONLY the following getting heavy minutes off the bench: NY, Dmac, Andray, sometimes AD.

Thats a 8-9 man rotation. It should stay that way. Wiz will win a lot more games.

Thats right NO JUAN, NO ETAN, NO SONG.

I'm a MD fan for life, but once Gimpert (if ever) returns, Juan or AD, gotta go!!!

Why are they wearing a uniform from some team that never played in DC?

While the Nats have no idea what they are doing half the time, I can guarantee you they wouldn't ever play a throwback game in Expos uniforms.

Red, White and Blue unis or the Orange ones, this is just stupid.

i agree with the sentiment that you shouldnt wear throwbacks from other cities [unless theyre in the region and dont have a team of their own] (when the t. rangers wore the senators uniforms it pissed me off).

however, putting that aside. those looked sweet. easily one of the best uniforms in the league this year. clean simple classic. the black stripes on the shorts really set the whole thing off.

was there a gold "belt" on the shorts?

Posted by: PindarPushkin | December 5, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

weird my post in favor of these clean and classic uniforms was not accepted.

to summarize:

- as a general rule throwbacks should not be from other cities (especially those that currently have teams)

but...
- these uniforms are one of the best in the entire NBA

- even liked the "belt" touch

- they really show how important the little trim accents are.

- the black stripes on the shorts really brought it all together

I'm watching the game vs the Bulls tonight and I'm ready to hang Tapscoti right now. Mcgee gets 4 blocks in 6 minutes (he does great)why not sit him on the bench to reward him. You IDIOT! Let Blanche and Mcgee play... I don't want to see Etan or Songaila. Wake up!!!
