Young's Fumble Crossover
Although it was once reserved for players backing down opponents in the low post, the "crab dribble" has officially been stamped to LeBron James. But what exactly do you call the dribble and spin move Nick Young used to embarrass Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace on Saturday night? The rat-ta-tat-tat? The fumble crossover?
If you didn't see the move, you can watch it below (No. 3). But essentially, Young dribbled up the court, slung the ball right to left, attempting a crossover to get around Wallace. The ball then it hit Young's left knee and dropped between his legs. Wallace lunged forward, and Young pitty-patted the ball a few times, then hit the spin button to go right. Wallace stumbled to the ground while Young turned and darted toward the rim. Once Young drew Emeka Okafor and Juwan Howard, he zipped a left-handed pass to Javale McGee for a dunk.
Chris Webber and Gary Payton had some animated reactions to the move on NBA TV last night. (By the way, if you guys haven't been watching Webber and Payton on NBA TV this season, you should treat yourself and watch those guys. They don't necessarily offer much insight, and their interviews are pretty much conversations with other NBA players, but their banter and nonsensical riffs are hilarious.)
At shootaround this morning, Gilbert Arenas wanted Young to show him the move again. Arenas told Young that he was lucky to get it off, but Young told him that he intended to make the play all along. Young tapped the ball a few times between his legs, spun right and did it again. He did it again to show Arenas that it wasn't a fluke.
Juan Dixon said, "It looked like he lost the ball, but he didn't. It was a good move."
Young grinned and nodded. McGee nodded his head in agreement.
"I know what I saw," Arenas said, "and he lost the ball!"
Young did the move one more time, so apparently he has been practicing it. Young just needs a good nickname for it.
