'The Process Starts Today'

Flip Saunders was introduced as the new coach of the Washington Wizards this afternoon. A frail-looking Abe Pollin introduced team President Ernie Grunfeld, who introduced Saunders, noting that this is "a very exciting day" for the organization and that the new coach "plays a fun brand of basketball."

Michael Lee will file a more detailed report later, but here are a few hastily typed quotes and paraphrases from Flip:

"I look forward to the opportunity."

"This is a very unique situation."

"You can make your own luck."

"There's a lot of talk about my huge playbook." It's about 60 percent defense... defense is a priority.

"There was a closeness to the team (during training camp)."

He described the team as a melting pot, with diverse talents. "They blend together."

"When a coach wants something and a player wants something, the coach wins."

In response to a Michael Lee question, presumably about coming so close to reaching the finals: "It makes you thirsty."

"The process starts today."

I saw some of the web feed. Poor Abe looks terrible.

As I said before, I think Flip will be a great addition for this organization. Gil is saying the right things about being more of a point guard but we will see if he is truly ready for the commitment. The next step now is building his staff and player evaluations. There will be some house cleaning Wizards fans. so those who have been defending the younger players don't be surprised if the Wizards look to move them to free up cap room or to bring in a veteran player.

Flip is a great addition, but just as important is getting a new medical staff. I am waiting for EG to announce that the team has hired a new training staff and team doctors to help diagnose and rehab all of the injuries that have happened the last 3 years. Seriously, this team is only as good as its health given all of the $'s tied up in Arenas, Jamision, and Butler...let's actually see if Abe approves the team paying the luxury tax.

Some smart trades to build the team. Yes...

Housecleaning. I doubt it.

The young players along with the lottery pick will be the core to build around.

God Bless Abe!
He build this town into what it is now - a real Metropolis.

DC is much more fun & livable - in every quadrant - than before VZN Center turned on its lights.
