Flip Adding Another Assistant? (Updated)

It seems like Wizards Coach Flip Saunders is close to adding another assistant to his coaching staff. According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Don Zierden is headed to Washington after resigning as head coach of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday.

Zierden worked under Saunders for five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and later joined his staff with the Detroit Pistons in 2005-06. He has coached the Lynx the past two seasons. The Star-Tribune reports that Zierden was seen speaking with Saunders and Wizards assistant Randy Wittman at Target Center, where Saunders and Wittman were watching NBA draft prospects at the Timberwolves practice facility. Zierden's resignation came just four days before the WNBA season began.

I just spoke with a league source who informed me that something could get finalized with Zierden by the end of the day.

All of our problems are solved, because we've got Don Zierden on his way to D.C.!!

Hopefully one of these assistants can teach defense!! And get them to utilize those skills during games.

Any word on the new medical staff that we obviously need? If not, any word on why the ones remaining from last year are not getting fired?

Hopefully under the new coach, the players will come to camp in shape, ready to play and not needing any surgeries that they should've had during the off season.

Trade Jamison, Mike James/Etan Thomas' expiring contract, and the 5th pick for Amare.. Sign Dahntay Jones from the Nuggets for Defense and start him at SG..Trade up in the draft with our 33rd pick and snag Eric Maynor the pg from VCU at 20. Call it a day.

Arenas Maynor
D. Jones Young
Butler Stevenson/Mcguire
Amare Blatche
Haywood McGee

Zierdon is a good coach, a very personable guy. He was with Flip one year in Detroit, but Dumars forced Flip to fire him and bring in more experienced assistants like Dave Cownes and Terry Porter.

not sure if everyone has seen it but brendan haywood had comments critical of lebron not shaking hands posted on yardbarker.com that I'm sure will add fuel to the wiz-cavs hatred of each other.

Haywood also said he wouldn't mind to play in philly with EJ when his contract is up. Please Javale SAVE US!!!!

I would never watch another game in my life if Dahntay Jones wore a Wizards uniform. I'll take my chances with Stevenson.

BTW, it has occurred to me that some of you may secretly wish that we draft tyler hansbrough. here's my take on that.

PRO: tyler can score close to the basket and has several moves off pretty good footwork. he shoots 80% FTs. has heart, sure (if small) hands, willpower, winning attitude and high ball IQ (as most kids from UNC).

CON: weak shooter beyond 6 feet (but gets lucky out to 10). height: not really 6-9 and doesn't jump high enough to make up the difference (ie, not a particularly good rebounder and will not block any shots). limited athletic skills. he is not quick or fast (but will run the court). his lack of quickness and body control will result in him consistently fouling out of games EARLY unless the refs look the other way and allow him to bang. the problem there is that he'll be at a disadvantage when taller, stonger and meaner guys bang him back.

OUTLOOK: he already has more offensive skills than etan thomas, and would most likely become haywood's primary backup. he could develop into a solid player if the refs give him some play. even if they don't opponents will have to check him under the basket. many of his shots might get blocked, but he also mighty get to the FT line if refs let him. best case is he may possibly develop into a bill laimbeer type player, although i don't think he's not mean enough. the team will need to pick up a bouncer.

It doesn't matter who the assistants are....it's all on EG shoulders.

The only way this team can win a championship soon is by trading the 5th pick for a veteran shooting guard. A rookie, DS, and/or Nick Young would be the weakest link (if healthy).

This team is not going to win by playing defense, so they better be able to out score the other team.

Run and Gun Larry?

ok ok ok ook ok ok ok ok

my turn for the trade wish list.!!

but before i do, remember when Kobe requested a trade from LA, and there was all this talk bout trading, Antawn Jamison,Gilber Arenas and 3 bench players for Kobe and glass of wine? LOL

but yea back to the new trade scenarios. I seriously think that the wizards should trade up and draft rubio because memphis wants to trade down.

If we give Memphis our #5 pick with one of our expiring contracts for the #2 pick we should then draft rubio and trade him to new york, along with nick young, the other expiring pick and our second round draft pick for david lee and larry hughes.

new york prally wont bite on that but who the hell wouldve thought the Lakers would bite on kwame brown for caron butler ya digg?

I've watched the Bullets/wizards since 1968 and been a long-suffering fan. This past winter I spent one month in the SF Bay area and watched at least 10 Warriors games.GS is ABSOLUTELY LOADED at guard and PF, to the point that Nellie didn't know whom to play. There were 3PGs who could have helped us and atleast 2PF (Kurz and Randolph). I say that EG should trade his #5 pick to GS plus one off-loadable salary for Bellinelli plus Kurz and perhaps one more.Pls look into it.Any thoughts?

"If we give Memphis our #5 pick with one of our expiring contracts for the #2 pick"

Posted by: jasperhneyaolcom | June 3, 2009 2:32 PM

This trade may sound crazy to some people, but there are lots of rumors that Memphis wants to trade down with the expectation that one of the two players that they covet most would fall in their laps. With the most important part being that it would come out cheaper for them. The Grizz love saving money.

Only thing is that I think they would rather get just "Cash Considerations" + 5th Pick than get "Cash Considerations" + expiring contract + 5th Pick. And it goes without saying that the trade would require some form of future pick(s) in the #20-#50 range. I don't think that too many people in this blog would miss those picks.

Posted by: SportzWiz | June 3, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

If Memphis truly wants to trade down then give them the 5 plus an expiring contract (etan or james) then take Thabeet and give the Wiz the potential for a dominant frontline for years to come.

Great insurance in case Haywood walks after this season as well. Imagine Thabeet at 5 and McGee at 4 a few years from now. What team in the NBA could match that length in the post?

Posted by: DMoney28 | June 3, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Haywood really hates Jordan's guts so much so that he would play for him in Philly. I told all of you that this franchise would rue the day they got rid of EJ.
